Cumbria Holiday Cottages

Holiday Cottages in Cumbria

If there's one part of England to rival anywhere in the world for its natural beauty, it's Cumbria. Characterised by rugged peaks, magnificent bodies of water and spectacular wildlife, Cumbria is an amazing place for a holiday and, even though it may just be a few miles from your home, Cumbria holiday cottages can feel like a world away from the usual hustle and bustle.

There are lots of amazing holiday cottages in Cumbria, including some of the finest in the whole country. Many Cumbria holiday cottages are found in the region's picturesque towns and villages, while others are in even more remote parts and are perfectly located for those adventurous hiking, climbing or cycling holidays. Whether it's a spacious lodge for you and your friends or a smaller stone cottage in a quaint little village like Skirwith, there are holiday cottages in Cumbria available for all tastes and budgets.

What to do on your Cumbria holiday cottage holiday

Cumbria is the perfect destination if you're looking for adventure. Home to some of England's largest peaks, including the towering Scafell Pike, it's the place to go if you enjoy hiking or rock climbing. Whether you're an expert mountaineer or an amateur fell walker, there are lots of holiday cottages in Cumbria that are perfectly placed for exploring those tall peaks and rugged uplands.

As well as its amazing natural landscapes, (and we haven't even mentioned the lakes yet!), Cumbria boasts some spectacular wildlife. With six nature reserves in total, the county is home to some iconic species, including red squirrels, roe deer and even Ospreys, which migrate year on year all the way from Africa.

Cumbria isn't all rolling hills and remote peaks, and the county is dotted with lots of picturesque towns and villages. Penrith, for example, is one of the large towns, easily reached by rail or road, and bustling with activity. Carlisle, the county town, is well worth a visit, boasting fascinating historic landmarks such as Carlisle Castle.

Take control of your next holiday and go self-catering with Cumbria holiday cottages. With pet friendly options, cottages with swimming pools and modern spacious lodges available, you're bound to find your next amazing home from home in no time.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Eleanor - Verified booking

We were moved to this cottage last minute the evening before our holiday by Sykes who suddenly cancelled our original booking.

Only 3 alternative options were given, the other 2 being further from the lake district so not suitable. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful over the phone and the location in the centre of town was great, and we were grateful they accepted the last minute booking. It had a large kitchen, was clean and warm and a visitor permit for parking was provided. It worked well as a base for exploring the Lakes and isn't too far from Windermere and Ambleside. Our main issue was that this was not an equivalent cottage to the one we had originally booked (this was entirely Sykes doing and not the owner's who had given accurate details when we checked their listing so please don't hesitate to book this cottage if it meets your requirements). We had booked a 2 bedroom pet friendly cottage that slept 4 adults, with large living room and views, and had made sure this had wifi which my partner needed to be able to work, and also had a washing machine and dishwasher. Unfortunately the cottage we were moved to had none of these and Sykes suggesting this was an equivalent alternative for the same price I feel was very dishonest. My partner ended up having to leave early due to the lack of wifi and phone signal and there was only one bedroom and one bed, which would have been a bit of a squeeze if 4 adults had been coming! We have still had no response/apology or partial refund from Sykes and I would be very hesitant to book with them again after this experience.

Immaculate and beautifully decorated and equipped.

Perfect quiet location around 10 minutes walk to the lake or, in the other direction, the town centre. Private off-street parking adjacent to the Coach House is a huge benefit in a busy town. The Coach House is very expensive, we paid the same price for a 10 bed Yorkshire farmhouse a few weeks ago. Every other holiday rental that we’ve been to has had a reasonably comprehensive set of instructions on heating, internet, bin schedules, recycling etc. No such information at The Coach House - a perfunctory sheet of phone numbers, a drawer full of equipment instructions and you’re left to your own devices. I had to climb up on a chair in the kitchen to find the router code on the back of the internet router on the top of the kitchen cupboard, eventually found a laminated sheet about bins in the garage and, after scouring the property for a heating timer, had to read the boiler operating instruction book - the owner or agents could and should do a much better job on this imo.

The property is in a great location to access Kendal for the high street and other facilities.

However we would recommend accessing from Kendal College as it is easier to get too. When we arrived we were unimpressed there was a pizza in the freezer and the fridge itself was not clean and the owner has no cleaning facilities such as spray and bleach for you to clean in case you need to therefore we had to use washing up liquid. The sink also was dirty and smelled which we had to clean. I would recommend bringing your own bed sheets and duvet cover and pillow as these did not look clean. We enjoyed visiting Lake District and went to Old Man Coniston, Cathedral Cave, Rydal Cave, Aira Force, lots of national trust and many more places. I would recommend to the owner to spend more time cleaning, give cleaning stuff to visitors ie kitchen spray, bleach, make the place more welcoming such as a welcome basket, more mugs for drinks, more clear glasses.

    Cottage is modern and clean.

Two double bedrooms downstairs and ensuite bathrooms with bath/showers. Hot tub overlooking the hills is the key feature! Easy access to walks around the area. Dog friendly, though there are a lot of sheep around so keep on the lead. Sky TV for evenings and relaxing, if you need it. Wood burner for a nice fire if it gets cold, but central heating as well. Beware the 2 mile single track road up to the cottage, tricky if you have a modern big-ish car, with few passing points if you encounter someone coming the other way. Wifi is available but patchy & mobile signal varies based on network. Overall, excellent. Great for a get-away-from-it-all break. Sunset in hot tub overlooking the hills is an experience not to be missed.

  • Stephen - Verified booking

We enjoyed our stay in Wood Cottage helped by the excellent weather.

A few things would have helped:- Needed a large pyrex dish to cook porridge in the microwave. Only 1 medium pan and it did not have a lid so made cooking of veg and potatoes difficult. The freezer comparment of the fridge was not powerful enough to keep the ice-cream frozen or refreeze the ice blocks. The cupboards had too many items in them and need a good sort out. Looks as though previous guests had left the half used shampoo and other toiletries behind. Need clearing out. Much appreciated the welcome items of bread, milk, biscuits, wine and flowers. Please inform the owners (Mr and Mrs Lister) before publishing our comments.
