The Hemmel in Oxfordshire offers a characterful and quirky stay with a great location and thoughtful touches such as bubbles and chocolate. While some guests have highlighted issues with maintenance and cleanliness, others have praised the property's comfort, the helpfulness of the owners, and the added fun of a games room. The property is well-situated for exploring the surrounding area and is particularly noted for its suitability for couples or families with small children.
Reviews present a mixed view on cleanliness. Some guests found the property to be tidy upon arrival with fresh eggs and chocolates, while others noted cobwebs, dirty skirting boards, and unclean kitchen appliances. The inconsistency in cleanliness experiences has influenced the score.
The location is frequently praised for being fantastic, quiet, and ideal for exploring Oxfordshire, the Cotswolds, and nearby towns. Its proximity to local attractions and the peacefulness of the surrounding area have been positively noted.
Guests have found the beds comfortable and the property cosy, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. However, some have mentioned issues with squeaky beds and uncomfortable seating, which has slightly impacted the comfort score.
Facilities have received mixed reviews. The games room is a highlight, but there are recurring comments about the poor shower pressure, lack of Wi-Fi instructions, and other maintenance issues. Positive feedback on the property's style and equipment is balanced by the need for improvements.
Several guests have appreciated the thoughtful touches such as welcome gifts of bubbles and chocolate, and fresh eggs. However, as these gifts are not consistently mentioned or guaranteed, the score reflects the overall thoughtfulness of the property's offerings.
Once again this owner has used her unique (and quirky!) style to create a stunning holiday property. This cottage really does have everything you could want or need. Located in a quiet corner of Oxfordshire and on the edge of a classic country village (Little Coxwell). The Hemmel, situated in the grounds of the owner's stunning farmhouse is filled with classic character - from the exposed beams and stone walls, to the original well (safely 'capped') located in the courtyard garden. The interior is cool and contemporary and provides luxurious accommodation: the twin bedroom and separate family shower room are simply but very tastefully presented. However, the standout feature in this lovely cottage has to be the master bedroom suite, where you can laze in the glorious roll top bath in the corner of the bedroom and admire the Oxfordshire countryside in the fields surrounding the cottage. The cottage represents the perfect choice for families or friends looking to get away from it all. On the doorstep you have wonderful walks, and a highly regarded pub serving terrific food in the village. If you prefer to prepare your own then you have 3 supermarkets less than 2 miles from the cottage. With Oxford about 25 mins drive away and the shoppers paradise of MacArthur Glen 30 mins away, you have got everything for a great break in a superb self catering home.
If additional accommodation is required, The Hemmel can be booked along with The Linhay (988824) to give enough space for 10 guests in 5 bedrooms.

Its characterful streets play host to a vast array of restaurants, shops and cafés making for delightful stop-off points during your visit. We enjoyed our stay. Good choice for travelling with your dog because there are some nice footpaths.

The games room was a nice touch. The only negatives were lots of spiders on the property and a loose tile and cracked tile in the shower room.
Janet
The games room in the garden was such a bonus, we had great fun. The location is good for exploring, the little village is beautiful, great for walking, wish we had brought better footwear. We really enjoyed our short stay.
