The village of Great Ayton lies on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, at the foot of the Cleveland Hills. Great Ayton is famous for being the boyhood home of Captain Cook, and is also mentioned in the Domesday Book. The village consists of a mixture of stone cottages and some new development housing. Great Ayton has two village greens, with a river running alongside, making it a popular picnic spot in the summer months. To the north of the village, the view is dominated by Roseberry Topping, a 330 metre hill. In the village are a good range of shops and inns, which, together with restaurants and cafes, cater well for holidaymakers. There is also the old school, now converted into the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum. Around the village are several interesting walks and Great Ayton makes a great base for walkers wishing to explore the stunning countryside around, especially in the summer months when the moors turn purple with blooming heather.

It is a great location in the foothills of the moors with good local walks and within easy reach of the coast. Very peaceful and out of the way. Of course you have to expect the cock crow to wake you but it does stop very quickly after 4 crows. The property is comfortable and well appointed. A few minor plumbing niggles but sort of par for the course for experienced holiday renters. Bring your own wifi - we used my phone as a hotspot ( on 3) which was fine. The same as many locations in the coutryside in the UK. Overall very happy.

This property is unsuitable for someone with walking difficulty, I had read the listing and did not read that the sitting room is UPSTAIRS, and had already rang to ask for the downstairs bedroom because I can’t do stairs due to spine damage, this property is ok for active people, I did not get to sit in the sitting room, the house was very cold almost all the time, we left a day early because we were not co for table, the owners are very nice but this was not for us, my pen rolled u der the bed just before we left, and under the bed was awful, papers, tissues, kids crayons, pictures, not at all clean,

The open plan unfortunately did not suit us since our dogs repeatedly woke us at 4am as soon as the sun rose, not helped by the king sized bed upstairs only being separated from the open plan by a curtain. En-suite toilet and washbasin. Space outside for the dogs is very limited and not secure. The twin bedroom is the only place of storage for clothes, albeit a large wardrobe sufficient for 4 persons. Cooking facilities are adequate, fridge and freezer sufficient for needs. Good washing machine but the clothes air was broken. Chairs are comfortable. Main bathroom and shower room are very well appointed, only spoiled by the fickleness of the hot water supply which is reliant on a shared wood burning boiler; you may have to wait for the water to get warm enough for a shower. Once warmed up, the cottage is quite cosy. Our older dog had trouble slipping on the wooden stairs. The proprietor is very friendly and approachable providing a welcome pack of tasty bread, carrot cake, milk, tea and bottled water. Deer and barn owls could be seen on evening walks through the fields. Could not connect with the house wi-fi but was just able to use mobile phone as a hotspot with 1-2 bars of 4G.
