  Cottage well situated in town.

  Kirkcudbright is wonderful and worth a visit, but we won't return to this cottage. Back door in need of redecoration, it is tatty inside. Air circulation in property poor as there are no trickle valves on the double glazing. Security poor - a simple yale-type lock on a front door in inadequate, and the back gate was impossible to bolt - even though the notes said that the back gate would be locked. Over a dozen instructions dotted around the house, plus a folder and a noticeboard! Most properties manage with just a folder. Back 'garden' and 'courtyard' were disappointing - vertical garden unsafe/impossible to use. The 'courtyard' was no more than a place to store bins and some strange storage box. Owner's attitude seemed sanctimonious and misogynistic when we asked if the Sky pin could be removed - why inflict a pin-protected watershed on adult customers? No customer should be called 'pushy' - maybe Sykes could provide this owner with some basic customer care training?

  Great location in the lovely town of Kirkcudbright.

  Both bedrooms and the bathroom appear recently redone and were very comfortable. We were disappointed, however, in the condition of the kitchen. We found a stack of greasy pans inside the oven upon arrival as well as a dirty window ledge, a rusty wok pan, and food residue in the microwave. These did not give us confidence that the advertised deep cleaning (due to COVID) had taken place. We contacted the owner who responded quickly with an apology and a promise to remedy the situation. Jo explained that she had been unable to visit the cottage in the last several months due to COVID travel restrictions and has been relying on her housecleaner to keep things up. I hope she can get the cleaning sorted soon as it was otherwise a delightful place to stay.

  Kirkcudbright is absolutely lovely, the people are friendly and it's a wonderful place to visit with lots to see and do.

  I would not recommend this cottage though for a number of reasons: 1) Wallpaper hanging down on the sloping ceiling above the bed in the twin room. 2) Hole in the wall by the table in the dining room. 3) Kick board removed from under the dishwasher etc in the kitchen and left leaning against the wall in the dining room - which I'm guessing had something to do with the ant killer bottle nestled in between the microwave and the kitchen roll in the kitchen. 4) Door to the bathroom was broken and wouldn't remain shut without being locked. Not ideal when you have children who want privacy on the toilet but are at risk of locking themselves in. 5) Paint peeled off a whole section of the kitchen door.

  This is my second visit to Nathaniel's.

  I was caught in lockdown on my first visit and the owners couldn't have been kinder and more understanding, when my ongoing bookings (and flight back to the US) were cancelled. That trip, the walled garden, providing a private outdoor space, was a godsend. Finally being able to fully enjoy Kirkcudbright merely deepened my appreciation for it. The cottage itself is nigh on to being perfect. However, I do agree with those who have noted the need for a companion set for the fire. I would add a small item that would also be helpful - a ladle for soups and stews. I have already begun saving for a third trip, which tells you all you need to know about this warm and inviting cottage.

  I stayed here for a week for a cycling holiday with my husband and sister-in-law.

  The cottage is extremely comfortable and well equipped, one of the best we've had. The weather was cold, but the pre-set central heating kept us warm. Very comfortable beds, great kitchen equipment, no problem making full meals. Plenty of free parking in the street. Very quiet. There is a clothes airer, and we also hung washing out in the garden. One thing, if you bring a bike, the (excellent) lockable storage area is down a vennel where the wheelie bins are kept. It was a squeeze to take the bikes in and out, and if you have very wide handlebars you'd struggle. We loved Kirkcudbright and the surrounding countryside and would definitely return to this accommodation.
