The Gower Peninsula has remained largely untouched since being named the UK’s first aonb in the 1950s. At 19 miles long, it’s famous for its beautiful coastline, while inland you will find farmland, oak woods and wide-open spaces. It’s amid this verdant landscape that you’ll find this converted stone barn, just west of Ilston, a tiny village with a cluster of cottages and ancient church. Less than 2 miles south, Three Cliffs Bay has a spectacular shoreline of sand dunes, salt marshes and limestone cliffs. Dog-friendly all year, it’s divided by a small headland from Oxwich Bay, the longest expanse of sand in South Gower. For a complete taste of local life, head 7 miles east to Mumbles where the landmarks include a lighthouse, Victorian pier and 12th-century Oystermouth Castle. Stroll the famous Mumbles Mile, where there’s a string of welcoming pubs and eateries, or sample one of the village’s legendary ice-creams.
There’s something for everyone to enjoy on the peninsula, and this delightful barn conversion has similar promise. Blending traditional features with luxury lifestyle additions, it’s a tranquil country retreat that impresses from the moment you step into the Great Room – a visual treat with a vaulted ceiling and inviting sofas arranged before a feature stone fireplace. With a separate reading area – and overlooked by a mezzanine level with further seating – this room presents lots of opportunities for friends and family to spend time together or apart. The warm hues of wooden beams and doors complement the flooring and furnishings in the Great Room; through one set of glazed doors the conservatory offers another choice of chill-out area. There’s a similar sense of space in the open-plan kitchen/dining area, where family and friends can gather to prepare and enjoy tasty home-cooked meals. All the essentials for hassle-free self-catering are supplied, and there’s a pretty wood burner between the breakfast bar and dining suite. A separate utility, cloakroom and home office have all bases covered on the ground floor, while upstairs there are four tastefully-furnished bedrooms – one king-size, two doubles and one single. An en-suite shower room to the king-size bedroom and a modern family bathroom ensure comfort for all.
This one-of-a-kind country home stands within a vast plot of land, with landscaped gardens, a pretty arbor and a pergola which houses the hot tub which is available all year round. The Gower is famous for its ‘starscapes’, so lie back in the bubbles and see how many you can spot. For those who want to let off steam, the undercover heated swimming pool, (only available from April 1st to October 1st) is a high-end enhancement to your holiday.
