What our customers say about their holidays

Owl's Hoot and all of the other barn conversions have been beautifully designed.

The location is lovely, very quiet & peaceful with lots of amenities a short drive away. The layout of the barn was good, small but still a perfect size for the two of us and our little Frenchie. Lots of stylish furniture, however it was a little uncomfortable, especially the bed; we both found the mattress extremely firm and the pillows completely lacking in substance, and struggled to sleep throughout the stay (a week) . The hot tub was lovely and the outside space beautifully put together, however it lacked privacy as the private/sectioned off areas are still quite open to the rest of the properties. Also, Owl's Hoot seems to have a lot less outdoor furniture (a single small bench) compared to the other properties, meaning it wasn't very desirable to sit outside and enjoy the surroundings, some chairs might be a good addition. One major downside for us was that there was no enclosed space for us to let our dog off of his lead; so he had to be in his harness whenever we needed to take him out. I think each property would benefit from it's own sectioned off space for greater comfort for dogs and additional peace of mind for their owners, as the thought of our dog escaping did weigh heavily on us for the duration of the stay, which caused stress. The gravel was also quite sharp for our dog's paws and he didn't like walking on it. There were also no designated dog waste bins and no recycling on site which surprised us. No water bowls for our dog either in the barn, which we have normally found when taking him away with us. The kitchen was well equipped, definitely one of the best holiday rental kitchens we have ever used, with good quality kitchen knives and other utensils and top spec appliances, all set into a beautiful worktop and cabinets. It would benefit for additional crockery and cutlery as we found ourselves constantly running out and washing up, and rarely had enough to fill the dishwasher, which felt wasteful. The bathroom was really nice and the shower was brilliant, great water pressure and nice and big. That room could benefit from a bit of additional storage, such as a unit in the shower and a shelf in the bathroom as there wasn't really anywhere for toiletries to be stored. Overall, we enjoyed our week at Owl's Hoot and would consider returning, however we would not bring our dog back as it is currently, and would be very conscious about the bed and how we slept.

In need of a deep clean through out .

I did spend three hours making the house habitable using the un opened array of cleaning products under the sink. We brought the lack of cleanliness to the 'owner 'Jaimie s attention after being at the property for less than half an hour ,who apologised profusely he explained he d had a family crisis and had not been able to do a thorough clean , we both felt sorry for him after he had explained the family crisis to us . He offered to pay for a meal or a free weekend stay , If we did not leave . We felt he needed a break so agreed to stay . He agreed the state of the cottage was unacceptable and it needed a deep clean . I got up at six the next morning and did a deep clean which took three hours. The water in the mop bucket was BLACK that was two buckets , both BLACK water full of grit and black dog hair. But it smelt much fresher. The television was not working on the Sunday , my husband asked Jaimie to come round, he only lives next door, when he knelt down to check the Ariel he said' oh my my god its filthy , I am so sorry '.. We made the best of it ,kept French door open when we were in the cottage to let fresh air circulate .It was worse on a morning when the doors had been shut all night , that horrible smell of musty un fresh , doggy smell coming from the sofas , which I did not clean as they are fabric and needed steam cleaning .We used a large throw I brought from home in case it was chilly on an evening , to cover the tartan sofa and our dogs clean beach towel for the cream sofa . We stayed five days instead of seven the rubbish bins were left under the kitchen window full , this attracted flies . I had offered to put them out but Jaimie had said no he would do it .He did not. This cottage is in a lovely location and we would have returned if the issues I raised with Sykes cottages had been rectified IE a token refund the price of a meal or free weekend Jaimie had offered . But these were just words and as Sykes complaints department manager kept REPEATING to me WE ARE JUST A BOOKING AGENT , YOUR ISSUE IS WITH THE OWNER , sooooooo If you dont mind doing a self clean before you start unpacking be Jaimies guest.

I’m going to talk about the only negative first and the only reason I gave it 4 stars because I just don’t want another dog to go through that.

I’m going to start by saying the negative isn’t anything the owners can control, and they were lovely when we mentioned it however I’d like to have known beforehand maybe in the listing or something so we could have made an informed decision. We were there nearly 7 days, and throughout this time, there was always really loud bangs that sounds almost like a single firework going off but intermittently throughout the whole day. Starts really early at 7am which is annoying but most importantly, ruined the experience for our dog. He was very scared of the loud bangs, affected whether he wanted to go out toilet (or anywhere really) or not, because as soon as he heard those bangs, he wanted to rush back in and hide. It wasn’t very pleasant to watch. So if you have dogs that are nervous, hate loud firework type bangs, then I would recommend leaving them at home. More confident dogs may be ok with it. But you know your dog best. The property in general was amazing! Well worth the money. You would think because it’s in a secluded area that there wouldn’t be a lot to do, but there are! Parks, beaches, etc. A lot of thought had been put into making your experience comfortable down to having a washing machine. There’s a little folder telling you where all the nice spots are, where to eat, takeaway menu etc, it genuinely is really well thought out. The apartments are stylish, comfortable and just the best place we’ve stayed at. The owners are really lovely and will sort out anything you need asap as long as you inform them. We absolutely loved the stay ourselves, just a real shame our dog couldn’t have the same experience due to the loud bangs. I will highly recommend that if the bangs are an everyday thing, that the info should be included in the listing so people can make an informed decision. Overall, this is a place I will highly recommend you stay at.

    The property was absolutely stunning!

The spec was modern and to a high standard, yet had a warm, homely country vibe. We took our 1year old Labrador, who was living his best life (it was his first holiday and he is sulking being back home!) There was plenty of field space for him to run around on (even after having long walks around the local trails and the beach!! He still loved the field on the back! It was also a gorgeous view when having that first morning coffee!) The only thing I would’ve liked, is a closed off space for the dog…not everyone staying at the barns wants to be approached by a dog, so I was always cautious when he was out. However, there were no issues, the space was great (we did bring the dog’s crate, which he went in so that we could enjoy the wonderful hot tub!) plus all the others guests were friendly and I appreciate how beautiful the courtyard is, so closing off areas might lose that look they are going for. The barn itself was very clean, as were the areas around the barns, it was beautifully peaceful and it was the absolute half term break I was needing! We would definitely recommend, with every penny, and we will definitely return in the future!
