What our customers say about their holidays

This is not to be seen as a negative review and I hope you take the feed back as constructive comments.
We had a brilliant family week and the location for central Castleton is brilliant. But the property is needing some TLC. Most kitchen utensils were provided - but we are glad we brought our large wok for cooking for a family of 7. There's no garlic crusher and an additional chopping board would be good. It might be worth sharpening knives or providing new ones as the ones provided are woeful. Not a massive issue to us, but there's no gate on the fence facing the public car park which could be a close call for potentially escaping dogs when front door opened. The front door supporting brace needs replacing as it is broken and you have to lean on the door to close it. There is no key for the side patio doors (that we found). The stable door at the rear does not close properly unless you really push it and lock the door from the inside. This is annoying if you are sitting outside. It becomes dangerous for little children and their fingers. No light bulb in small room and no replacements or spares anywhere. Dishwasher needs salt to be provided - there was none that we found, so it often didnât clean very well. Tumble dryer - doesnât dry clothes completely dry. Accessible electric cables/wires under tv are not only visible and unsightly, but grabbable by a child unless really supervised. The welcome book is lacking any real details about managing the property itself. The bins - although it canât be helped - were 3/4 full on arrival. There is also a lack of details for bin day collection point. I placed the green bin in the car park, but luckily I saw the bin crew at 6:30am and they said they only collect from the roadside. There is no hot tub information/ upkeep details what so ever. Luckily, we knew we had to add chlorine as the slow release container floating around had run out by Wednesday. Who knew you had to remove this when in use? I can only compare to other places I've been where staff visited twice a day to check levels. It shouldn't be down to guests to manage the safe use of a hot tub, with no instructions. There are no spare bedding or pillows (its stated beds can be pulled apart if needed which is great, but there are no extra duvets provided) there is also an under sheet missing. The curtain in the living room is annoyingly short. Cleaning, just generally could be better. It seems a surface clean is done, rather than a thorough turnover. There are cobwebs and spiders in most room corners, the worst place being above the kitchen fridge. Bathroom window is in need of repair (there was a note on the window) however the bathroom door in the same room also doesnât close properly. In addition, the toilet seat is moving and needs to be fixed/ replaced. King size bedroom en-suite shower doors donât close completely, and tray floods - due to blockage. Stairs are loud and need new wedges, difficult to move up and down the stairs at night time without waking others and one gets a sense that the stairs are going to collapse! Security for dogs and young children in the garden is concerning given the proximity to the main road and it is fortunate we were fastidious in supervision. We had to move any wood lying around to form a barrier to deter them from escaping, especially towards the car park side. There were many screws lying around in the rear pebbled area that we picked up following construction of the welcome cover to hot tub. It seems a missed opportunity to encompass the fire pit and grassed area along with the pebbled area into a wholly securely fenced area. The seating area along the fence in the pebbled area, along the roadside, by the hot tub is a great idea, but it is too high. It needs to be halved in height to sit comfortably on. This is by far the main area we used A seat leg was broken on the arm chair in the living room by window. We ended up balancing this many times so it could be used. The oven has a weird funny smell when in use Castleton experienced a massive power cut during our stay, so the burglar alarm needs resetting as it was beeping and there was an issue rebooting the WiFi and TV but we conquered that eventually. I come back to the Welcome pack, there were no instructions how to do any of this. A clock would be nice on the fireplace in the living room. It takes two adults to lift the hot tub lid on and off. Actually 3, the first time we used it we leant the lid against the fence, but it dropped down the back and it took 3 adults to get it out (2 in the spa). Whilst the lady cleaning the hot tub was utterly pleasant, she arrived at around 8:30am, but check out is at 10. The hot tub was being drained by before 9am, which didnât allow any use for the morning of departure had we wanted to. Fortunately we didn't, but we were just not expecting anyone so early. Again, I come back to the welcome pack (lack of) information if 8:30 am is the norm.

Well, what can I say, North Lodge is amazing!
! Apart from being slightly apprehensive regarding the comments about a man banging on doors and windows, (which I am happy to report we didnât encounter during our stay) we had a fabulous time! The lodge is very close to the centre of town, walkable but it is uphill on the way back. We visited the Crown and Cushion for a meal, the staff there were lovely and the meal amazingâ¦We can highly recommend the Blade of beef. Fish and chips from the riverside chippy were also delicious, we took them back to the lodge and ate them on the picnic bench outside! North Lodge is ideally placed for days out. We Stumbled upon Penrith Castle where we had a lovely walk around the ruins and park, in hindsight we should have packed a picnic and had our lunch there as the weather was lovely. Windermere and The Beatrix Potter museum is about a 60minute drive away, my little girl loved the museum and my Mum and Pooch enjoyed watching the world go by with a cup of coffee across the road in the Flying Pig where we had a very tasty lunch too. Hadrians wall is approximately 1 hour away, we didnât research it very well so didnât get the best experience but the tea room at Birdoswald was lovely and my daughter managed to get a âRoman rulerâ from the souvenir shop. North lodge has everything you could need for a fabulous stay including the hot tub which my little girl loved! The kitchen is extremely well equipped, all the usuals toaster, microwave etc but not mentioned in the lodges description is the fact that tea towels, dish cloths, washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets are provided too as well as plenty of loo rolls, we brought our own and were pleasantly surprised when we found them already provided. There is also a hairdryer in one of the bedrooms which is a bonus. The information folder and leaflets are all very helpful and include wifi password and emergency contacts. We have a couple of teeny tiny suggestions - a couple more mats in the hot tub/shower would be helpful as I felt like I was going to slip with my wet feet on the tiled floor and finally, the security light at the back of the lodgeâ¦wonderful to have but we looked like we were doing a rain dance every night when we were out with the dog as it only stays on for a few seconds!!! We had an amazing stay and will definitely be coming back, my little girl wants to stay for the full week next time!!! Thank you for making our break amazing & comfortable and we will see you soon.

The house was truly fantastic, really spacious and we had a ball all weekend!
We were 12 adults and a toddler and everyone had the space to enjoy themselves without getting under each others feet. Even though the weather wasnât great there was so much at the house to keep us entertained that we didnât leave for the entirety of our stay. We especially enjoyed the games room, pool and jacuzzi. It was a great touch that we could have a supermarket shop delivered before we arrived which was all put away nicely so when we arrived we could just start the weekend straight away. Everything has been thought of and there was nothing that we ended up needing throughout the weekend, from having a full set of toiletries in every bathroom to fans and phone chargers in the bathroom and an incredibly well stocked kitchen (including oil coffee tea sugar etc!) it really does make the difference. The house was pristine and appears to be really well maintained. All the rooms and beds were comfy, and we also found everything we needed to keep a 2 year old entertained. My only feedback for an area of improvement is the check in/check out times are a bit stingy for a self catering holiday home. Not being able to arrive until after 4pm and then having to be out by 10am meant we felt like we had to instantly crack on with dinner on the night of arrival and on the day of check out was a big rush in the morning making and tidying up breakfast for 12 people and packing the house up. Just an extra 2 hours on the check out day would really extend the enjoyment of the house :) itâs just that good we didnât want to leave!!

Overall this is a fantastic house for a large get together.
The facilities are first class, there is something for everyone and plenty of space to chill out on your own if necessary. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable with plenty of bathrooms. The hot tub is super on a chilly day, either during the day or at night watching the stars. The swimming pool was a fantastic addition and enjoyed by all the family, whilst the games room kept us all very entertained. If there are any criticisms it is that the bottom of the pool was not clean, there was lots of grit and the sides needed cleaning as there was residue all around the waterline. The need to enter the pump room to either activate or deactivate the air conditioning to the pool was not a pleasant experience as the room was very dirty and full of stuff The light switch was not easy to see in the dark - positioning the switches outside the room would be preferable and safer. Additionally, the drive in was extremely rough as the surface was unmade and very rough and difficult to walk over. The outside lighting to the front side of the house that overlooks the terrace, steps and car parking area is totally inadequate - at night it is barely possible to see where the steps are, which is a hazard both getting out to the car and upon return. These apart, it is an exceptional house with beautiful gardens; we all fully enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to return. Our host Danny was brilliant and showed us around on arrival and was available to answer any questions we had.

The house itself is wonderful.
Lots of space, great open plan kitchen dining living area. Rooms are all spacious and comfy, hot tub and garden are lovely. Local area is quiet but nice pubs and walks are a very short drive away. Hot water situation is quite tricky, especially with a house of 10 adults. Waiting 30 mins between everyoneâs shower is unreasonable and a lot of us had freezing cold showers only despite all showers being quick and no baths. The house is missing a few essential bits, we had no washing up liquid or dishwasher tablets or normal tea bags. Lack of bins for recycling inside the house. No handsoap in the upstairs bathroom. The kitchen equipment is also a little limited for a house of this size. We had 10 people staying and struggled when cooking, lack of pots / pans, bowls etc. The aga is also tricky, mainly as the dials have no numbers on them and they get burning hot when in use so itâs hard to select temps etc. Sykes as a booking agency are extremely difficult. Website is inaccurate and unhelpful, causing a major issue with my booking that I then had to pay extra for. Their phone options are unhelpful and they point blank donât respond to emails - I was told this on the phone. To the point where I had emailed repeatedly asking to speak to someone about my booking, had no response, and then had my entire booking cancelled.
