Holiday Cottages in Powys

Powys is the largest county in Wales as well as the longest in Britain. Powys population is widely dispersed resulting in very unspoilt country side. The area covers parts of Snowdonia, Cambrian Mountains, The Brecon Beacons and the list goes on. There is so much to see in the county of Powys, making it a very popular location for last minute holiday rentals.

With a huge array of activities and things to do in Powys, it's a must for a holidays. Why not visit The Black Mountains which are a group of mountains spread across Powys. There are walks with stunning views and many pubs offering amazing local food, it's great fun for all the family. The Brecon Beacons also offer some spectacular and unique upland formations. Lake Vyrnwy is also a great attraction to visit. With amazing waterfalls, unspoilt countryside and mountainous areas it resembles the Alps. With its amazing beauty its hard to believe that it's a man made reservoir.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Holly - Verified booking

We booked this cottage for my partners birthday and to get away to relax in the stunning Welsh countryside.

We did manage to achieve this, however we were disturbed by the adjacent cottage on two nights. You'd expect anyone getting away to the countryside to respect their surroundings and others around them, but unfortunately this wasn't the case. The first group who we were met with the first night of our stay were a nightmare. They were there to party, play loud music and drink. To his credit, I sent a text to Arwel during the night and by the next day he'd cut their stay short. They had trashed tje cottage and unfortunately Arwel had to clear it all up. I'd like to preface that none of the groups' behaviour is a reflection of Arwel at all. He was always on hand to help and always checked if we were okay, if we needed anything etc. We then had a blissful five days with no disturbances until the group on our last night arrived. Guests were very noisy in the pool and also a few of the guests were disruptive and shined their phone torches towards us and then took flash photos whilst we were trying to get some peace in the hot tub, which is really weird behaviour. This was gone 11pm, and unfortunately it put a dampener on what was otherwise a wonderful week away. We left early due to this as I wasn't comfortable with the ordeal. It seems we had a streak of bad luck, as judging from the other reviews the guests are usually respectful and quiet. I don't want this review to be all negative, because we had the best time despite the other guests. Everything else was absolutely perfect! The cottage was wonderful and can't fault it. The scenery was beautiful, there were lots of cows and sheep and green hills. Arwel always made sure we had everything we needed and asked if we had enough logs etc. The bed was the comfiest we'd slept in for ages, kitchen was well equipped and immaculate inside. We made a lovely roast dinner in it. Loved the hot tub, it was the best maintained one we've had! We had an amazing five nights and we seen a lot of beautiful sights including the nearby waterfall and lake. You could also see all the stars as there's zero light pollution in the area. Wales is truly stunning. Shame about the lack of privacy though. We would love come back and would hope that next time we get luckier with the guests we'd share the space with.

This one bedroom cottage shares the main grounds with a house which can sleep 15.

However, the house is sufficiently far enough away from the cottage that there is little noise, even when a large group is staying there. The grounds are well kept and full of flower beds and tubs which are tended to regularly by Del. The cottage itself is well equipped for self catering, boasting a gas oven and hob, which came in very useful when we experienced power cuts during our week's stay; and how blissful to be able to cook with gas!!! The main door opens straight into the lounge and dining area, boasting a high ceiling with stain glass window. The spacious bedroom is off this area and has a dressing table, two bedside cabinets and wardrobe, along with comfortable double bed. The well equipped kitchen is accessed through an open doorway from the lounge area, and as well as the gas oven and hob has dishwasher, washing machine, microwave and under counter fridge and freezer, and plenty of cupboard space, which is filled with crockery, pots and pans, cutlery and anything else you might need! The combined shower room and toilet, with sink, is situated off the kitchen. The back door opens onto a small patio area where there is are table and chairs for two, with parasol plus barbecue, leading to a lawned area and raised platform containing a two person hot-tub with large parasol. You can see the main house from this area, but it is sufficiently far enough away not to be intrusive. The owners, Arwell and Del are friendly and welcoming, making sure they were on hand when we arrived, and attending every day to see to the hot tub. Arwell kept us informed re the re-establishment of power and took pains to make sure we enjoyed our stay and Del provided us with cake and milk. We highly recommend Bwthen ty Newydd as a place to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside, with plenty of places to visit and walks around the area; or somewhere just to stay and relax.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Old Cobblers shop but there were a few areas that we feel could be improved.

One issue we had was that there seemed to be a bit of a fly problem, there were lots of flies in the accommodation that we could not get rid of and it was not very nice having to eat in there with flies flying around. We did have to go out and buy some fly spray from a supermarket but even with this there was still lots of flies. When we arrived the dishcloth was wet and had clearly been used and left in the sink. I would have preferred no dishcloth as opposed to a dirty one. There was rubbish in bins which had also not been emptied around the accommodation and the outside area which suggests it hadn’t been cleaned properly. There also seemed to be no wifi in the accommodation despite it being advertised to have wifi, this wasn’t a massive problem but when wanting to watch a film at night we couldn’t use Netflix or the internet to find a film. A slight recommendation would be for there to be a welcome book with information about how to use the facilities and any important information in. For example, people may not use a pizza oven, hot tub or sauna regularly so it would be good to have some top tips or information about how to use them. The bins are also different in local councils so we were unsure what to do regarding recycling and general waste. It may also be worth mentioning when booking the local shop opening hours, it closes at 3pm on a Saturday so if checking in on a Saturday it will already be closed when you arrive so at least if made aware prior to arrive we could have planned to stop at a shop further away. Like I said we really enjoyed our stay and these were only minor problems which hopefully will be addressed in the future and despite these we would definitely recommend the accommodation.

We had a lovely week at Bwthyn Ty Newydd which sits in a quiet and secluded location.

Easy to find, with the help of Google Maps, we were greeted with a warm welcome and a lovely selection of homemade cakes which went down well with a cuppa after our long journey (milk was in the fridge, too). All you could need is supplied in the accommodation, including a lovely roaring fire when we walked in which we kept going with the supplied logs. The kitchen is well equipped, the bed is comfy and the living room was cosy when nighttime arrived. In the garden, the hot tub is the perfect size for two and we enjoyed sitting out in the sun, watching the lambs enjoying their new freedom in the nearby fields. If peace and quiet are what you are after, this is the perfect location for it and clear night skies allowed for amazing star gazing. A lovely chapel can be found at the end of the road with a lake, waterfall and other walking routes a short drive away. You're also only a couple of hours away from the coast and Snowdonia isn't too far either. Welshpool and Newtown have a good selection of supermarkets and there are a few pubs around too. Lovely stay - highly recommended.

The old cobblers was beautiful and in a great setting.

Driving up to the cottage was great and seeing it had us excited for or stay. On entering it was what we expected cosy and modern with small rustic touches. Outside areas were amazing and clean. Hot tub was great and the sauna was amazing after working out how it works. Few small negative points, no welcome book to say how things work e.g sauna, microwave oven, induction hob. No sauspans for cooking food, Also found popcorn in the side dresser, floor was dirty. The biggest issue and there is not much you can do about the weather but it was so hot in the accommodation because of the heatwave there was no way to cool the place down because if you opened the windows and doors you would have a room full of flies.also no shelter from the sun outside if you wanted a shaded area. Bed was comfortable shower room great. Sofa cosy and in the evening plenty of areas to sit outside but the lighting did not let you play cards or read outside.overall we would book again but knowing what we needed we would take them along. Winter time would be lovely with the firepit and log burner.
