The attractive, unspoilt rural village of Armathwaite is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District, Eden Valley and the lovely coastline of the Solway Firth. The village has two old pubs, both with popular restaurants serving excellent food, a village Post Office and a traditional village shop. The River Eden runs through the centre of the village, and the area is renowned for its excellent salmon fishing, plus walking, canoeing and climbing. Armathwaite Castle, by the river, is a four-storey Pele Tower, and the 15th-century church has fine examples of stained glass windows. The Eden Gorge, between Lazonby and Armathwaite, is one of Cumbria's best-kept secrets, and is well worth exploring. The local railway station is a stop on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and where today many old steam trains still wend their way through some of the finest countryside in Britain. The Rheged Discovery Centre in Penrith is the "largest grass covered building in the country" or you might like to visit Dalemain Historic House, featured in a television production of Jane Eyre. The town is within reach of the Lake District National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, providing guests with many mountain biking, hiking, and birdwatching opportunities.

The pod does require some maintenance, however. One of the wicker chairs out front had gone through and the curtain rail was coming away from the wall on the right side. The kitchen sink leaks and floods the bathroom floor near the loo. We were disappointed that the listing suggested towels were included but then to be told we had to pay £15 for them. Thankfully the owners were kind enough to provide towels and promised to correct the ambiguous wording on the Sykes listing. We were also surprised that we had to pay a £100 deposit on arrival. Nowhere in the correspondence did it say we needed to do this. Even more disappointing was that we only got £75 of our deposit back after a week, with no message or explanation as to why. Fair enough if they thought we had damaged something, which we hadnât, but there was no inspection or opportunity to discuss. Essentially they have put their hand in my wallet and helped themselves to £25. For this reason I would not recommend this accommodation.

Bed comfortable and facilities good. We met the owner and was very welcoming and showed us the lodges on site. We will recommend the Swallows to friends and family. Thanks to all staff involved who made our stay enjoyable. From Glen and Jackie

Nestled in a beautiful location, the views are simply incredible. The owners are not only welcoming but exceptionally friendly, making our stay even more enjoyable. The nearby local pub adds to the experience with its lovely atmosphere and superb food. It has become our go-to weekend retreat â a perfect blend of tranquility and delicious dining.
