The picturesque gritstone village of Birchover is believed to once have been used by Druids as a ceremonial worship site. There’s a rock formation called Rowtor Rocks, with caves and carvings, prehistoric monuments and stone circles, including The Nine Ladies overlooking the village on Stanton Moor (where you can also find the Cork Stone). At Robin Hood's Stride and Cratcliffe Tor, a medieval hermit's cave can also be explored. Just five miles away, the popular town of Matlock, together with its neighbour, Matlock Bath, has been attracting visitors to the area since the spa was developed in the late 17th century. Set in the beautiful wooded gorge of the River Derwent, the Matlocks offer a range of shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as a host of attractions including Gulliver’s Kingdom and the Peak District Mining Museum. Magnificent views down the gorge can be enjoyed from the cable car which takes visitors up to the Heights of Abraham. In the opposite direction is the market town of Bakewell, and a little further beyond lies Chatsworth House and Park. With walking and cycling to suit all abilities, thriving villages and some wonderful scenery to enjoy, this part of the Peaks is sure to tempt you back time and time again.

Great access for walks and local attractions like Chatsworth. Really well managed too - questions pre holiday answered straight away, and we had a couple of little niggles while we were there that were sorted with the minimum of fuss - made the stay all the more relaxing! Highly recommended.

The cottage was very clean and comfortable. A beautiful rural location. It was lovely walking along the lane outside the cottage with views across the valley. Plenty of lovely walks and also the towns of Bakewell and Matlock just a short drive away. It was great that we could charge our car on site and the owners were very helpful with this.

It's warm and cosy (although the heating needs adjusting as it was on in the night), and we appreciated the space in the house. A few things to mention, which have been mentioned in a couple of other reviews, so perhaps the owners can actually sort some things out so it gives a better review. The beds were all really poor, which I appreciate is subjective, but with large ridges in the centre and poor quality mattresses we didn't sleep especially well. Also in the ground floor room you need to put some kind of cabinets or shelves, the bookshelf is not ideal. For 2 people it would be hard to store anything, especially if you were there for more than a night or two. Perhaps swap the bedside tables for drawers? The L-shaped sofa is really only possible for 3 people to sit on, so if there were more of you it would be an issue to get comfy in the evenings. We wouldn't book again, because for this price we'd be expecting a little more out of a place to stay.
