Once a Spa town on the southern eastern edge of the Peak District, Matlock in Derbyshire hasn't lost its relaxing charm. Far from it. With a main town further north and Matlock Bath seeping south down the gorge, you get two for the price of one. The Heights of Abraham attraction in Matlock Bath (with a 554ft cable car if you think you're brave enough, and a cosy restaurant to relax in if you're not) is the perfect way to spend a day, along with the well established Gulliver's Kingdom theme park for the kids. Matlock itself gets all the best of the Peak District's natural charm, encapsulated by the Lumsdale Valley with its free-flowing waterfalls and gorgeous mossy streams, and Hall Leys Park, a beautiful floral area with plenty of things to see and do.
