Guests say

Guests appreciate the cottage's charming location next to a lock, with its proximity to lovely walks and historical canal paths. The interior is generally well-received, with nicely furnished bedrooms and a well-stocked kitchen, though some updates and maintenance are suggested.

The property was described as clean and tidy, indicating good cleanliness standards. However, one review mentioned the kitchen needing a thorough clean, which slightly lowers the score.

The location is highly praised for its great setting and the availability of pleasant walks, contributing to a high score in this category.

Comfort is generally satisfactory with mentions of comfy beds and a lounge. However, concerns about heating in certain areas and the steep staircase for elderly or young children slightly reduce the comfort score.

Facilities are adequate with a well-stocked kitchen, but there are several mentions of the property needing updates and maintenance, as well as a slippery patio and insufficient heating in some rooms.

There is no mention of gifts or additional thoughtful touches provided by the host, so it is not possible to assess this category.

Uppermill is one of seven villages situated amongst the 18,0000 acres of moorland hills, open fields and scenic valleys that comprise the Saddlworth area. These Pennine villages have a wool spinning and agricultural heritage dating back to the Industrial Revolution, but today Saddleworth has evolved into an attractive South Pennine and Peak District National Park area with breathtaking views and glorious stone built buildings. Upper Mill is a thriving village popular with tourists with a good range of amenities including plenty of restaurants, cafes and pubs, as well as a growing number of craft shops. Part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is located close to the recently restored Standedge Canal Tunnel, Britain's longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel. The canal which runs through the town provides opportunities for traffic-free walks along the towpath, fishing and boating. There is one unique sport local to Uppermill called "cobbling". It involves a barrel of cobblestones, a closed road and a bag of cement - come and visit to find out more. Saddleworth is home to a wide range of festivals and community events, the most famous of which is the Whit Friday Band contest, which attracts the UK’s and Europe’s top brass bands and was the backdrop to the film ‘Brassed Off’. Nearby attractions include Dovestones Reservoir for boating and walks, and the Castleshaw Valley with an interpretation trail for a Roman fort, the highest of a series built on the Roman military road from Chester to York.

But overall the property is tired, dated, and in need of a lot of updating and maintenance; the kitchen utensils are old and cheap and the kitchen itself needs a really good clean! We stayed in many properties via Airbnb, Cottages.com and Skyes Cottages ....and this was by far the worst!

We would return again unfortunately my parents found it unsuitable due to the steep staircase which had no banister/grab rail. The steep staircase should be declared only for consideration by the elderly or parents of young children and should take nothing from the very old buildings character which has been tastefully presented with nice walks along the canal which has a lot of history.
