Guests say

The Roundhouse in Devon is a spacious property with a charming rural setting, ideal for large gatherings. Guests have enjoyed the comfortable beds, swimming pool, and games room. The property's location offers easy access to local attractions, and the presence of en-suite rooms in a large barn conversion is appreciated. While some guests have reported maintenance and cleanliness issues, the overall experience has been positive, with many expressing a desire to return.

Reviews on cleanliness are mixed, with some guests finding the property to be generally clean, while others have reported issues such as cobwebs, dirty floors, and unclean kitchenware. The presence of both positive and negative feedback suggests that cleanliness levels may vary, but there is room for improvement.

The location is frequently praised for its idyllic setting and convenience for exploring nearby attractions such as Dartmouth and Salcombe. The rural charm and accessibility to beaches and towns make it a favourable spot for guests.

Guests have found the beds comfortable and the property spacious, providing ample room for large groups. However, some have mentioned that seating in the main area could be more comfortable, and there have been reports of maintenance issues affecting comfort, such as broken bed bases.

The property's facilities, including the swimming pool and games room, are highlights for many guests. Nonetheless, there are several mentions of maintenance issues like broken dishwashers and the need for refurbishment. The pool's booking system during COVID-19 was well-received, but overall, there is a need for attention to maintenance.

While some guests have mentioned the provision of essentials like tea, coffee, and milk, there are no consistent references to gifts or special touches that would indicate a level of thoughtfulness. Therefore, it is not possible to provide a score in this category.

About this property

The Roundhouse is a huge and splendid house converted from a barn. With seven en suite bedrooms and a private little annexe, it makes sociable and flexible accommodation for a wonderful gathering of friends or family. The grandeur begins as soon as you step into the main hall - the height of the house with vast rafters, the impressive open plan living space stretches the width of the house. Cook in the well equipped kitchen area, then eat all together around the long oak and stone table below designer lighting. Afterwards, snuggle up together below the big lofty oak beams around the wood burning stove and watch a family movie on the home cinema system. On the same level are two of the comfortable bedrooms at either end of the house. For enjoying a quiet book or the countryside views, climb up the vertical ladder to another comfy seating area on the mezzanine. Children can gather in their own den on the ground floor with a TV and fun piano. You will find five more bedrooms on this floor, all good sized and with French windows off the master double. The annexe is ideal for anyone who loves a little peace and privacy, with exterior entrance and comprising a big en suite family bedroom with comfortable chairs, TV and drinks making facilities. Outside is all the activity you could wish for, with a shared splendid indoor pool, play area and games room, as well as the farm walks to enjoy. The Roundhouse also has its own big private sunny terrace at the back with furniture and barbecues and steps up to a lawn and a pretty meadow area to the side for running and chilling out. The Roundhouse is a very special and thoughtfully designed house to welcome everyone. Note: The Roundhouse is situated on the same Bickleigh Farm as Oak Tree 976220, East Bickleigh 976183, The Hay Barn 976197 and Swallows Reach 976144.

Halwell is a small village in wooded farmland equidistant from the busy little town of Kingsbridge and popular Totnes.

So much so that both myself and my wife along with my daughter and her partner ended up with flea bites all over our feet and ankles. The open socket in the kitchen is a death trap and should be capped off immediately.

Every thing supplied you would need. The pool, games room and playground a real bonus. I say it was a lovely property, and fall short of saying amazing, because it probably was when it was originally refurbished. It just seems to have lacked any maintenance recently. In isolation it seems petty to mention such small details but they all add up. Loose toilet seats, external door handle barely hanging on, broken fridge tray (mentioned in previous reviews as long as 2 years ago). The little snug up in the roof beams was a delight, with such comfortable furniture. The view would have been superb if it were not for looking through dirty windows and detracted by the broken outer layer of glass. It left me feeling like I was in a grubby bus shelter! And my biggest gripe was the light not working on the outside of the annex. After spending the evening with the rest of the family in the main building, my wife and I would leave at night to reside in the annex by means of walking down several steps outside. A motion sensor light was fitted to the front of the annex but not working. It was pitch black and my wife missed a couple of steps in the dark (not helped by the overgrown shrubbery) and nearly fell. I mentioned this to the owner on day 2 of our stay and she said she would get her husband to look at it but, alas, never did. This is a real safety hazard and should be fixed as a matter of urgency. A wonderful property but just needs the owners to do some proper maintance.

It is a spacious, well-designed house that was ideal for our group of 17. The five children particularly loved the swimming pool and the (recently improved?) playground as well as the nearby Woodland Adventure Park. The adults enjoyed a glass of wine on the lovely terrace in the evenings and dinners around the big kitchen table. The free electric car charger was a major bonus for us and much appreciated! All in all a super place we will definitely recommend to our friends. There were some minor maintenance issues such as broken shelves in the otherwise perfect big fridge, some very soft mattresses that need replacing and leaking pipes in one of the bathrooms. It was also not clear from the description that the development includes several other holiday homes, whose occupants share pool and playground. The set-up and well-placed vegetation ensured that we were hardly aware of them and there were absolutely no problems, but it would be better to clarify the situation from the start.
