Sanquhar, a former Royal Burgh, is located in Dumfries and Galloway beside the River Nith. The name is derived from the Gaelic "Seann Cathair," which means "Old Fort," and the old castle remnants can still be seen at the southern end of the town. Robert Burns frequently travelled to Sanquhar, where the surrounding landscape served as an inspiration for several of his best-known nature poems. Currently, the town offers a variety of bars, shops, and cafes, as well as a 9-hole golf course, a contemporary swimming pool with an attached fitness centre, and the A' The Airts Arts Centre, which features a wide range of local and regional arts and crafts. The town also has the world's oldest operating post office, with 300 years under its belt. Only 10 miles to the south is the magnificent Drumlanrig Castle and Country Estate, which provides a variety of family-friendly activities all year long. The Carsphairn and Scaur range to the west and the Lowther Hills to the south-east virtually encompass Sanquhar. The settlement is traversed by the 212-mile Southern Upland Way coast-to-coast footpath. In addition to several local tracks and forest roads, mountain bikers can take advantage of the waymarked trails at Drumlanrig Castle and the 7stanes trail in Ae Forest.
