What our customers say about their holidays
Tanya - Verified booking
Honestly? We actually really liked the place.
It was large and spacious, lots of room for the 5 of us. It's well equipped, and the owners have obviously put quite a lot of hard work into making the place a nice and welcoming base from which to explore Filey and it's surrounding area. However... What let it down? Cleanliness. Whoever is cleaning the property was obviously rushing through and simply cleaning easily seen areas so that first impressions are positive. Look a little deeper though and that changes. I really don't want to spend the first hour of my holiday cleaning and bleaching the toilets. Lifting the lid to find 'dirt' marks and hairs meant i wasn't going to let my family use the bathrooms until they were cleaned to a good standard. It just went downhill from there, with the fridge having crumbs and marks in (all easily cleaned off by us), one of the freezer drawers was full of unwrapped sausages and burgers obviously left from a previous group, and an opened bag of ice, all of which we had to throw out ourselves along with cleaning the drawers so we could use it for our own food. The kitchen hadn't been properly wiped down, the microwave, oven and bin obviously just given a quick wipe over and there were crumbs at the back of the kitchen-sides and under the glass chopping boards/around the sink. In the living room we only had to sit on one sofa to be given a perfect view under the opposite sofa of thick dust and crumbs. Non of the above was 'searched out' by us, just easily viewed areas that should be obvious to someone cleaning a place. The bannister was wiped but sticky. I didn't dare move any furniture, beds, etc as I dread to think what it would have been like underneath things. That said, my husband told me on the way home at the end of our week, that he checked all rooms to make sure we hadn't left anything and found a soiled thong behind the bed my son had been using. I guess that will still be there as I very much doubt the cleaners ever look so it could have been there months! On our last day, while loading the car, my husband was approached by someone we assume was one of the cleaners, and asked if he was staying at No.1 and could we strip the beds and bring all the washing downstairs for them as they 'can't park for long so it saves us time' - I suppose that explains the lack of proper cleaning... Unfortunately in addition to this the beds were very hard, like sleeping on a board, with the pillows being very cheap and flat so giving very little comfort. I appreciate bedding is a very personal preference, but a little comfort on holiday would have been nice. Such a shame as it's obvious the owners really care about the place. We love Filey and have been coming for a long time. Sadly we won't be back here.

The apartment is beautifully decorated on the third floor with good facilities as in kitchen facilities , WiFi and television .
The views are spectacular from the Juliet balcony . Sandsend has a beautiful beach . Unfortunately the accommodation is set back and accessible by steps and we did not manage to get parked throughout our stay making unloading luggage /shopping difficult . There is a public car park lower down about a 5 minute walk away that is chargeable . Cleanliness did not meet our expectations , floors had not been cleaned and were visibly dirty . The shower screens had also not been cleaned well and the toilet seat was broken , but my husband managed to repair it . Food products left in the freezer from the previous guests, bread bin and kitchen bin visibly unclean . Storage in the second bedroom a challenge too - storage available under the bed but this was visibly unclean and hook available along with hangers on the back of the bedroom door . The hallway to the apartment is shared with the apartment below. For the duration of our stay the front door was left open by the apartment below, we felt this was a security concern . The hallway was often cluttered by belongings from those in the apartment below , and it was damp (possibly from the door being open continuously ) and unclean . The apartments are on a busy road and traffic can be continuous at certain times of the day . Sandsend is a lovely little place and there are a few eateries within walking distant and Whitby isnât far . We enjoyed our stay once I had cleaned and vacuumed through the apartment . We do feel that in comparison to our second accommodation we stayed at in Whitby this was overpriced and we would probably not stay again nor recommend .

My partner and I go to Scarborough yearly for a short break with my sister, who has special needs, we normally go to The Sands but decided to try somewhere new.
We were a bit worried about the location of Apartment 1 although we knew roughly where it was. We shouldnât have bothered itâs in an ideal situation close to both the town and the seafront. The car stayed parked up all week which was a great treat in itself. My sister doesnât âdoâ walking! Ha ha! Lazy the word is. Parking vouchers were provided for us. The apartment itself is beautiful. Clean, beautifully decorated to a very high standard with beautiful decorative touches youâd expect to see in a building of that age and stature. It is extremely comfortable and stocked well with lots of bits and bobs you may have forgotten to pack in your bag. Thatâs a nice touch. I canât recommend Apartment 1 enough. The fact that our weather was fantastic added to the experience. The rain was torrential one day and kept us in until about 4pm being there was no hardship as the apartment is just so comfortable with a tv in both bedrooms too so we watched our programmes and my sister watched hers until it was âsafeâ to go out. What lovely apartment. It was an absolute pleasure to be there I only wish we had booked longer.

Lovely apartment with great view out of the front french window and juliette balcony onto the whole beach.
Being high up means the road is not very visible, and the beach and sea panorama is spectacular at all times and tides. Apartment is compact but space is well used. We appreciated the good quality equipment, and little touches like some salt and pepper, handsoap and washing up liquid/dishwasher tablets (just needed a dishwashing sponge). Just a few points which may be helpful to others: Parking - a few spaces available and free on the street but a bit hit and miss as to whether you get a space; otherwise car park is £6 per day, less than 5 minutes walk away, but a bit far if trying to load/unload. Entrance door is quite stiff to lock (and handle needs lifting to lock - exit only by key), and is shared with Flat 2, so may be left unlocked at times. Entrance lobby seems a little damp but the flat itself is well maintained. Entrance door is effectively one floor up garden steps, then one floor to Flat 3 door, then one more floor up to the flat itself. We booked through Sykes Cottages and found them to be very helpful.

We thoroughly enjoyed our New Year week and would return, although there are a couple of things to consider.
We travelled with our elderly parents & younger child, we were concerned that the locks on the bathrooms were not safety locks, which means you cannot gain access from the outside should anything happen, also, there is no holder for shower gels etc, you have to use the floor of the shower (our parents are in their 80âs, but we also found this tricky). The kitchen cupboard knobs have a metal decorative finish, unfortunately one kept bending out of shape and is sharp, if itâs possible to remove this Iâd recommend you do. The last thing is the kitchen tap hose, unfortunately there seems to be a piece missing from its holder, which means it doesnât stay in place and shoots off all if the time, it just needs a replacement. There are so many positives about the property - location, cleanliness, good use of space, and the history story & pictures are a lovely read. Thank you for sharing your wonderful property with us.
