What our customers say about their holidays
Tricia - Verified booking
We spent two weeks in this lovely cottage in the centre of Dartmouth.
Having read a negative review just before leaving we were pleasantly surprised. The best thing about the house is definitely the view from the top floor and we spent time just sitting with a cuppa (and occassionally a take-away cream tea) looking out at the comings and goings in the harbour below. For us the house was wonderfully well-equipped. Especially the kitchen. We like tea and usually take our own teapot but the house has one! And a water jug! Half way through our two weeks the agent contacted us and offered us a clean and fresh sheets and towels. They are local so you can easily contact them about any issues you may have - we didn't need to. It was good to have a parking permit for the carpark which is only a short walk from the house and there is space in the road to drop off on arrival and as you leave. Although the house is central to the town it is not overly noisy. The shops have everything you need and many luxuries you don't! We chose to look round the town in the mornings and late afternoons when it was quieter. Fish and chips, fudge, ice cream and cream teas abound as well as lots of pubs and eateries to chose from. There are lots of things to do locally; use the ferry to Kingswear, take a boat trip down the river , walk to Agatha Christie's summer home, visit the castle, take the steam train to Paignton and look round the Royal Naval College. There are also beaches where you can swim and a multitude of water sports. The house is on four floors. The living room is comfortable and has a TV which even technophobes like ourselves can work! The beds are comfortable and two bathrooms mean you can space out a little. The dining table in the kitchen sits 6 and as said earlier the kitchen is well equipped with storage space for our own provisions. The washer dryer was great as was the dishwasher. Two small issues: the stairs between the four floors are quite steep and the water pressure was not great. One small improvement I would make would be a little table in the room with the view for a table to put your cream tea on!

Aeolus house is well situated in Dartmouth and the view from the top floor is wonderful and really makes up for the lack of facilities, old and tired furnishings and kitchen equipment, stained carpets and marked walls!
A clothes airer that collapses when full of clothes, no room in the kitchen cupboards for food as they're full of unnecessary items. The house was tidy but not clean! Dirty pans in the cupboard, food crumbs inside the fridge and stuck to the side. The stairs are quite narrow and steep, something to consider when booking as it's over 4 floors, It became very tiresome to prepare for the day! The top floor bedroom with the king size bed was lovely, although the ceiling slopes away and makes it difficult to get in and out of the bed without twisting your back! The view from the landing at the top is absolutely spectacular, most evenings spent with a cup of tea watching the ferry going back and forth, great viewpoint of Dartmouth! Take ear plugs the seagulls are really really loud from very early on. We were lucky with great weather and made the most of the local areas, Paignton via steam train a must, paddle board off Strete beach lots of fun, Totnes a lovely town with amazing pasties and boat hire on the river Dart. If you love seafood especially fish and chips..... Rockfish is well worth booking a table, absolutely delicious, very well catered for kids too with a wonderful pack of goodies and lovely friendly staff! The Dartmouth arms is good for a pint in a plastic cup that you can take out to sit by the river but don't waste your money on the food it was grim and expensive! There is a lovely large play area at coronation park for kids, tennis court, playing field and a fab cafe. We had a wonderful time in Dartmouth and will definitely return but not to this property!

Excellent property.
We will be back! HOWEVER, you may wish to pass on to the owner the following problems: 1. Leaving the key in a key box located inside the external bin cupboard was not a good start. We arrived at 5.30pm (just half an hour after the earliest permitted access time) so it was starting to get dark. I am 79 and my Wife is 75 and we needed to contort ourselves just to find the key box! There was a chord hanging down, which we presumed was a light, but if it was, it didn't work! So, we found the key box but it was so dark inside the cupboard we couldn't read the numbers to open it! Our 'phone torch was not strong enough but luckily a lady who is living at number 24 came over with a torch and she actually managed to get in the cupboard and get the key out of the box for us. I'm not sure what we would have done if she hadn't been there! We think it would be far better if the box was screwed to the inside of the bin cupboard door, thus once the door is open, it would be easy to locate and operate. 2. The plug in the ground floor bathroom washbasin does not hold water. Impossible to keep any water in the basin. Most frustrating. 3. Two of the five table lamps in the bedrooms did not work (bulbs need replacing?) and the table lamp in the sitting room also does not work. We only offer the above information because if no-one tells you/the owner, nothing would be corrected. We WILL be back! Regards John and Maggie Reeve.

Lovely, warm and cosy period cottage with traditional features but all modern conveniences, including Nespresso coffee machine.
Lovely quality crockery, cutlery etc and sharp kitchen knives, which are so often lacking. Comfortable bed. It was just two of us so we used the first floor bedroom and generously sized shower room, but there was another double and a single room on the second floor with a bathroom with a bath. Bed linen was good quality. Good access to internet and Smart TV apps and lovely, easy to use, gas fire to take the chill off when necessary. Appreciated the bottle of bubbly and initial supply of milk, tea bags, coffee capsules, dishwasher tablets and wash capsules (a second kitchen bin liner would have been useful). Like others we found the car park space tight, especially when the neighbouring space is occupied. My hatchback is described as compact by its manufacturer but at most it's small mid-sized, but it was a squeeze and you have to reverse in or you can't get out of the car. If we had been more than two plus a small dog and driven a larger car we wouldn't have been able to use the space. The ground floor area of the cottage is lovely, but again, we were only two and it would have been tight for space with 4 adults. Very easy walking distance of everything in town. We particularly liked the Dart Cafe as the dog was warmly welcomed. We drove to Brixham via the lower ferry, and went to Kingswear as foot passengers to ride the steam train and back. Easy access to the South Coast Path on a good day too.

Barberry Brook was awful, it was filthy, dusty, run down, absolutely full of cobwebs/spiders/Insects and flies.
We could not stay there. The owners werenât there to greet us, we were wandering around for 45 minutes before just letting ourselves in to be disappointed. After phoning them to complain they were extremely rude and uncooperative. We had to wait well over an hour and 30 mins for them to return. The whole site was nothing like the photos, very run down, no tennis court as advertised, filthy games room and junk everywhere. The Photos online seem to be from years ago. Sykes wouldnât return our calls to the emergency helpline, therefore leaving us stranded with zero assistance at 7pm. We wanted help for an alternative accomodation and none was given. Therefore we left the property and booked into a hotel, leaving for home the next day. We have now been told we cannot claim our money back. I have left a review on trip advisor with more details. We will never use or recommend Sykes again, and have been left extremely upset and our holiday ruined. This needs looking into further, I would suggest Sykes visits these kind of holiday cottages/establishments every so often to review the star rating as this certainly was far from a 4 star and very overpriced. We will carry on trying to get our holiday refunded as we feel itâs extremely unfair as to how we have been treated, especially trying our hardest to get help from Sykes but being left until the next day without any contact from them.
