What our customers say about their holidays

Solway Cottage is situated in the pretty village of Powfoot, only a few steps away from the Solway Firth shoreline.
The cottage is the first on the left, opposite the right hand turning into Ellerslie lane, as you descend into the village. The welcome gifts were greatly appreciated and enjoyed. The settees were comfortable with plenty of cushions. The twin beds, which had been put together to create a large double bed, were very comfortable and we slept well each night despite it being the hot weather in early September. However, there were no pillow protectors and one of the mattress protectors was stained. There is plenty of kitchen equipment though I found the food storage cupboard very small. The shower was very good and has coloured lighting to enhance the experience! The back/ side door was extremely difficult to open and lock , this may need some attention. The washing machine, which we only used once, sounded as if it was a concrete mixer, the noise was dreadful, it may require a service or replacement. The bedroom curtains were not thick enough to keep out the very early morning sunshine and blackout liners could be useful and easy to install. The fridge and freezer struggled to stay cold in the recent very hot weather, a blind on the porch door may be worth considering. There is no information about recycling glass bottles and jars, we brought ours home to recycle. We were alarmed at the prospect of a £250 Good Housekeeping Bond charge given that the whole of the property needed a deep clean. We found clumps of dog hairs everywhere, including hairs in the fridge! We were aware that this is a dog friendly property when we boomed but werenât expecting this. We did clean the property to a better standard than that which we found. The curtain tie backs were on the floor, I reinstated them to their correct position. The bin in the kitchen had no top but I found it, broken, in the under sink cupboard, this I mended and put back on the bin. The under sink cupboards are dirty and so were skirting boards. There are lots of stains and marks on walls. Maybe others would be content to put up with all of this. We wonât be booking again to stay at Solway Cottage.

Wonderful, the cottage is superb, quiet, comfy and incredibly well equipped ( especially in the kitchen) even has fibre WI-FI and a smart TV!
The most dog friendly environment. We went to explore and advise you get out and about - you will be incredibly rewarded, even out of the door. Walks we did and recommend ( do some research) Penbont to Kier Mill river walk, Tynron ( park in village hall car park) to Tynron Doon ( Iron Age settlement) well worth the slog- its beautiful. Rockcliffe on the Solway coast - beautiful coastal walk and drive to Steamboat inn at Carsethorne for a yummy lunch, lovely friendly pub with a stunning local real ale! Our favourite though was a drive through the Delveen Pass to the Gray Mares tail and waterfalls ( spectacular) then drive north about 1/2 way along St Maryâs reservoir and take the road to Tweedsmuir along Meggit and Talla reservoirs - about 18 miles of complete beauty and we passed 1 car and a cyclist! There is a walk just at the bottom of the hill with a board and a gate- park up and take the path up and view the river and scenic waterfalls- STUNNING, you will not want to stop going on! then drive on to lovely Moffat , we visited the distillery and bought a few bottles. On top of that you have Drumlanrig castle and itâs beautiful walks ( blue is best) on your doorstep. The hosts Pauline and Derek are lovely, unobtrusive and helpful when and if needed. We ( and the 2 Labradors) had an epic time.

Lovely cottage.
Youâre made to feel welcome as soon as you arrive. Fresh eggs from the farm were delicious. The kitchen is really equipped for cooking a meal. The garden was perfect for our two boxers dogs. There was sheep and lamb in the field right next to us so we got to watch the lambs playing around most mornings. The beds were comfortable and the whole cottage was clean/spotless. We all felt right at home. The weather wasnât the best but we made the most of it and hopefully can return in the summer. If not for the rain I would have been in the garden most of the time. We went to the Thornhill inn for dinner one night which was great pub grub food. Not far from the cottage only about 15/20 mins. We also drove to Sandyhills beach one day with was about an hour away. But worth the drive even if it did rain. The beach was lovely and the dogs had a blast. We went for dinner to the birchtree hotel when we left sandyhills and the meal was amazing. Must visit if your heading down there. We will defo visit again soon. Thanks to Pauline and Derek for being amazing hosts. Kelly Kev Charley & The Girls Tilly Billie xx

This is a nicely located property close to the sea, and with dedicated off-road parking.
It has an excellent bathroom with a decent shower. The kitchen is small but fine for a week. The bedrooms are small but OK & with plenty of hanging space & drawers. The lounge/diner is large & airy, but suffers from 2 weaknesses which should be remedied quickly. The first is there is only one lamp - so we had to move that to the dining table to eat in the evenings and then unplug it & move it back to the side of the sofa afterwards. A second lamp would cost very little but enhance the experience significantly. The worst feature of this property by a mile is the television. It is not a SMART, so it's not connectable to the Wi-Fi, and therefore it's impossible to connect to Netflix/Amazon Prime/BBC i-Player/X. It isn't even possible to connect your mobile to the set with wires - as the set is so old it only has the old video connections - no USB connections. This is really something the owner should address - these days everyone uses catch-up TV, and not having access to it was a negative. The welcome pack was nice & much appreciated too.

A beautifully maintained and spotless cottage.
From the bowl of free range eggs to the jar of delicious chocolate cakes and biscuits to the basket of dog toys in the cupboard, not a single thought had been forgotten to make us feel truly welcome. The hosts, Pauline and Derek were so friendly, even to Derek kindly coming to find us in the local village when we had got ourselves well and truly lost in deepest, darkest Dumfries-shire and leading us right to the cottage. The bedrooms were spacious and the beds/pillows very comfortable. Our two large Golden Retrievers slept with us on their vet bed in the twin bedroom and there was stacks of room. The dogs loved the totally secure garden. I would gladly give more than 5 stars if I could! We've rented quite a few cottages over the years and this was undoubtedly the best of the bunch. We'll be back!
