What our customers say about their holidays

His is the first time that I have been disappointed with a Sykes holiday cottage, and I have been using your company for many years.
When we arrived on late on Saturday afternoon we noticed that both bathroom windows had been left open, the reason for this became perfectly clear the following morning as there was a vile smell that pervaded throughout the upstairs rooms, but was particularly unpleasant in the bathroom. So on the Sunday we bought some air freshener, but this only took the edge off it, although did prevent it spreading beyond the bathroom. On the Monday, I bought some drain cleaner/unblocker and poured it down the sink, this I left for 4 hours and then rinsed with hot water. Finally by around Thursday, the smell was all but gone. You have to understand that the smell was so awful it made me want to vomit. I have never known such a terrible pong, and i have worked in some pretty smelly places. So to the rest of the cottage, mostly it was alright, although we did think that the kitchen was a bit under supplied with cupboard space. The clock wasn't working, so we put a new battery in it, a light bulb went pop in the lounge so I had to change this too. The outside light didn't work, which didn't make for easy access in the dark due to all the steps. We used the washing machine mid week but then found that there was rather a limited number of pegs! The hot tub wasn't especially clean, with bits of the cover and flies floating in it whenever we used it. Certainly not upto our usual standard of holiday stays. Thankfully we enjoyed good weather when we were down for our fortnight, so we were able not to have to spend too long in the cottage. That said, we did like how the fence shielded you from the road noise. The walk to the cliff top was nice, and the views along the coast were spectacular at sunset. One of the positives of our stay were the guide books, as we like to do a fair number of walks, the local one through Tehidy was quite pleasant. It was nice to get the welcome hamper on arrival and to have milk in the fridge. I think my only other quibble was that it was very hard to get out onto the road as it is totally blind pulling out of the drive. If there was a mirror opposite it would make life far easier. Would I stay here again? Absolutely not. Especially for the money that we paid. I have stayed in far nicer holiday cottages in Devon and Cornwall and will not be returning to this one.

Driving up to the stunning venue I was really impressed with the immaculate grounds and the scenery.
This was well maintained throughout the stay, with the grass being cut daily! If only the same amount of effort was placed inside to make everything as good on the inside as the outside... The bed was the most uncomfortable bed I have had the displeasure of trying to sleep in. And this is coming from someone who could literally sleep on a log if given half the chance. Sorry but I really think this should be addressed. I understand regulations are there for a reason, but having an emergency LED green light, then with REFLECTIVE lampshades... oh the joys along with a bed that you can't get comfortable in. Both me and little one struggled with this. The curtains in the cottage we stayed in didn't even cover the whole length of the window. I'm not a bath person and love a great shower, but there was no chance of this at all, no pressure enough to even try and swill off sand after coming back from the beach, let alone a hose long enough to even reach down to your legs. Added with the tedious task of having to work with a limited supply of hot water from an immersion tank and a bath small enough for only half of my body to fit in, there was no relaxation after a long day exploring the beautiful beaches around. Children's playground consisted of 2 swings (1 baby and 1 single seat), a set of monkey bars and a few balance beams... bit of another disappointment really, it was such a good space and could be so much more! I can't fault the staff who were brilliantly welcoming and the entertainment at night was enough for what the park offered. The pool was clean and changing rooms were well managed by the staff. Overall, the place was clean and tidy, both the cottage and the reception/ entertainment areas. In saying all this, I would think about booking again if the cabins were maybe better than the cottages. And whilst I totally get that they are "cottages", I just felt with all the maintenance outside, surely some of this effort could be used to update the inside of the cottages?

Absolutely perfect!
We booked Barley Crush for a quiet getaway with our 2 dogs. We were not disappointed. The barn conversion was beautiful both inside and out, renovated to a high standard but kept beautifully traditional. The furnishings are good quality, tasteful and above all else very comfortable. The accommodation was surprisingly spacious, the pictures do not do it justice. It was warm and toasty on arrival, plentiful hot water and free logs for the woodburner. The kitchen is well eauipped. There is everything you could possibly want or need for a home from home stay. Many properties âallowâ dogs but few offer the welcome that this one does, towels, bowls, and even a lovely comfy dog bed provided!! The girls were delighted. The outside space is secure for all but the most determined escapees, pretty but natural and a wonderful place to sit with a morning coffee whilst listening to the birdsong, or with an evening glass of wine watching the sunset, and if you are lucky enough to have clear skies the stars are abundant and bright. Claudia was lovely to chat to, not at all intrusive, and lives nearby should you need anything. We and our dogs enjoyed walks directly from the door though fields and ancient woodland, along the river and up over the beautiful rugged Bodmin moor. If you are looking for a peaceful tranquil haven that is right off the beaten track but within easy driving distance of the beaches and busier attractions that this amazing county has to offer, you will love Barley Crush. We have stayed in many locations on and around Bodmin moor, and this is one of our favourites. We will definitely be back.

The Threshing barn is set in a lovely village location perfect for anyone wanting a peaceful holiday. It is about 20 minutes to Truro and Falmouth and also to Porthtowan beach, where you can book surfing lessons and there are cafes/restaurants, beach shops and toilets. As a family of 4 (children aged 15 and 12) the size of the barn was ideal and with 2 bathrooms there were no arguments! I would suggest some hooks to be added in the bathrooms for dressing gowns/ towels to be hung. There were plenty of coat hangers in the wardrobes. Beds were very comfortable. The kitchen was well-equipped!The outside space is lovely and well-maintained, the patio area has seating and a BBQ - unfortunately the weather didn't permit us to enjoy the outdoor area! There is also two car spaces and a games room with a table tennis table, this area is shared with the cottage on the grounds. We had an issue with the oven the day after we arrived and customer services were very efficient and it was sorted the next working day and It didn't stop us from having a wonderful holiday at the Threshing Barn.

If you want to take a holiday away from the hustle and bustle of life, then you could do a lot worse than pick Barley Crush Cottage.
It's a lovely place in a beautiful quiet location on Bodmin Moor. Do take note of the hosts comments about the track up to the property, you do need to take it very steady, but it's well worth it. The directions given to find Barley Crush are good, but a bit of advice if you're primarily using satnav. It's best to put in the name of the farm the cottage is on instead of its postcode. This is because the postcode directs you to another farm nearby. If you're able drag yourself out of the cosy environment you can create, do take a look outside if a clear evening, because with the lack of light pollution the night sky is so beautiful. The hosts Claudia and Ben make a great effort to ensure your stay is a great experience as the cottage is extremely well equipped and comfortable. There's also some nice goodies provided for you to enjoy on arrival. It was a really enjoyable stay and highly recommended.
