What our customers say about their holidays

  • Yvette - Verified booking

We really enjoyed our stay at Poet's corner.

It is beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. The underfloor heating throughout the ground floor was very pleasant - on the verge of too hot even, but fairly easy to turn down - though that was because I knew how these type of things worked, I didn't come across any instructions. The kitchen had everything you could need including tea towels, oven gloves, washing up kit etc. I'd been really organised and brought my own as this isn't aways the case! But it was nice that they were there. The wifi was good enough to stream films over christmas, the location in Bourton was really good, just round the corner from the centre. And having a second sitting room was really nice when you wanted a bit of alone time. We were slightly concerned about the church bells. However i can report that they can't be heard at all in the two first floor bedrooms, only the second floor one, and they were not loud enough to wake you, but you would hear them if you were awake. I really liked them actually. The only negatives were the top bedroom was meant to have a king size bed but it was two singles pushed together (maybe zip and link, not sure), which wasn't as described and the person who used it really didn't want to be in a single bed. The listing should be updated to reflect this. Also the way the twin beds are set up, the bedroom door could not be closed. I had to push the bed by the door to a 30 degree angle to get the door to shut. This might be OK for a children's room but for two adults it would not be great. As I was in there on my own, it wasn't too bad. The shower on the first floor was very pleasant but as it was a waterfall shower it was difficult to use if you weren't washing your hair, which my elderly father wasn't too keen on. It would have been nice to have a second smaller shower head that could be removed from the wall as well. And the shower on the top floor leaked on to the floor the way the doors shut - however it was easy enough for the water to be mopped up. As I said earlier, I didn't find instructions (this may have been me missing them) for appliances or the heating, which would have been helpful. Every brand is slightly different, although most of it is fairly obvious. The microwave took the most working out! The notes haven't been updated since covid so these could be looked at again. Eg we were meant to put linen in provided bags - but there weren't any. Assume no longer required, but is it still required to strip the beds? Not sure. However I could happily have stayed in this lovely cottage - probably forever! We really did enjoy our stay and would thoroughly recommend it - we are a family of 3 adults. I've been on holiday with Sykes before and as always they are easy to deal with, the process is easy, and they respond quickly - a good company.

    Great location .

Nice large cottage ,enclosed garden . However I contacted 3times to ensure cot supplied and set up On Arrival eventually found cot in a box -a travel cot which was broken .The top bar kept collapsing so if my baby granddaughter stood up and held bars it would collapse -very dangerous I did call Sykes but my daughter who luckily hadn’t left home yet managed to source a travel cot to bring We would’ve had to wait for Sykes to sort it and already late so had to ensure we had a safe cot for that night . I wasn’t happy about this as I had messaged Sykes twice beforehand and called just before we left to check again and was informed via messages that everything listed was there correctly-Not ! The lounge had an odour of old upholstery which was offputting so I bought air fresheners and mattresses too soft (all my family mentioned the mattresses were too soft ) I appreciate with allowing dogs and weekly turnover it’s hard to please all customers and people may bring dogs but the lounge sofas should be cleaned more often and cushions etc I presume all throws are washed after each booking?? If your looking for a large cottage with character very central to tourist locations and great walks Then The Old School house if great But double check for specific items and call Sykes immediately if not supplied Luckily my daughter hasn’t left to travel so she could bring cot but otherwise I’m not sure how long it would’ve taken to sort out as 6.30 pm when they arrived and we needed a secure cot for that night

The property is well situated for the lovely walks in Winchcombe.

However, it's not the most comfortable cottage we've stayed in. First, the positive things. The beds are comfortable and there is good water pressure. The kitchen is well-lit and mostly had the things we needed. There were several things that made it a less than ideal cottage though. Firstly, the top two bedrooms have large velux windows directly over the beds measuring perhaps 3 feet by 4 feet. Unfortunately, there aren't any blinds over these, so the rooms are flooded with bright sunlight the moment the sun rises. So, don't expect to get any sleep the moment it's dawn, which was an issue for us in the spring - and I can imagine it will only get brighter in the summer. Secondly, the two-seater sofa felt rather thin, narrow and inexpensive - certainly not amongst the more comfortable ones that we have had. We often decided to lie on the comfortable beds when reading as the thin sofa was actually a bit uncomfortable to sit on for long. In the lounge, there is also only a two-seater and two armchairs plus two floor cushion / foot stool type things. So, if you are a party of six, some of you will have to sit on floor cushion / foot stools. The house is also on a street that counts as fairly busy for a small town. We go away to a lot of cottages, so we know what life is like in small towns and villages, but in this property we were quite aware of traffic noise early in the morning (maybe 6am) when delivery vehicles were dropping off at the supermarket across the road.

The property and location were an excellent fit for us.

We were a couple plus my partner's parents, so our ages ranged from 59 to 89. There were a lot of stairs between the top and bottom, but we were agile enough and they presented no problem. We managed to chip a plate and break a cup in the sink and would suggest the simple addition of a standard sink bowl (We replaced both with similar, even though the chipped plate is usable) The showers on both floors were great, but a more standard shower head on a flexible hose might have been better. The small floor-space of the shower with a large overhead shower is difficult to trust when you don't know how hot/cold it will be. All the rooms were excellent, of good size and the furnishings were nice. It felt modern and clean at all times whilst being literally a hop/skip and a jump away from the church and the very centre of the village. The private parking was brilliant and I found that when taking the elders to the nearby attractions (De La Hayes Cafe/Birdland/Model Village/ Shopping Areas) the easiest thing was to drive them there and then bring the car back to the house and walk to rejoin them and then collect the car later. It was a way better option than pay and display parking when you have no idea how long you're going to be. Overall, extremely pleased and hope we can return in the not too distant future

    Lots of plus points.

The location is great and very scenic. Useful info packs, reading books and other quirky touches. Beds are good, the showers produce lots of hot water. The kitchen is well equipped and the dining space big enough for 10. The lounge is also big enough for 10 comfortably, however.. The previously reported problem in the comments of people getting stuck in the old side bathroom was still present. The shower is also flooding out which is asking for trouble. We had people in the garden when my sister was stuck luckily. After that no one closed the door… (The phone signal sucks so we didn’t bother to call this in) The Wi-fi works well, but the Nest thermostat is disconnected at set times (deliberately) and it’s an old house and is on cool side. The sofas have seen better days but are comfortable enough. There’s a nice trip hazard rug you have to roll up as well. The new side bathroom sucks if you are over 5.11” you can only stand in the shower or doorway and have to bend double to get to the shower or loo. Generally, we felt the pictures on the site were better than the reality of what is a near £1m property. In hotel speak, the property is tired, and we left feeling like we’d been overcharged.
