What our customers say about their holidays

  • Jacqui - Verified booking

The cottage itself was lovely and very well equipped and comfortable, one of the best I've stayed in.

It was very clean and clearly a lot of thought has gone into guest comfort. The location is beautiful. What I didn't like was the lack of privacy. CCTV recording video and audio at the front. CCTV on the back garden. Neither were declared in the listing even though Sykes say it should be disclosed. Fortunately the hot tub is around the side and not covered by CCTV. Over zealous and very bright security lights made sitting outside in the evening with a glass of wine to enjoy the fading light impossible as they come on at the slightest of movements. This was a disappointment as it's a great spot for night sky gazing. Ditto for enjoying the hot tub after the kids have gone to bed. No screening between the neighbours conservatory which abuts the boundary so the neighbours were sat a few feet away looking straight into the garden. There was an odd and seemingly unnecessary mention of sex offenders in the guest information folder which my daughter read. I hadn't expected to be explaining to a 10 year old what a sex offender is on the first night of my holiday. The information on wild boar was interesting and informative. The hot tub almost certainly was not serviced during our stay. It had reasonable use as there were 5 of us but despite diligent showering beforehand by the 5th evening the water was cloudy and it had a very unpleasant smell. We left on day 6 so no idea if it was serviced after this. We pretty much only ever book properties with hot tubs and have never previously had issues with water quality or smell. It was too cold to use on the first evening presumably due to a change of water so don't expect to relax in it soon after arrival. When usable it was a great addition. On the whole what should have been a wonderful stay in a beautiful cottage didn't feel particularly relaxing particularly when using the outside space. I'm aware I could have cancelled on arrival as the CCTV was not declared however this wasn't a realistic option after a 7.5 hour journey with three young children. It's not particularly clear from the listing whether there's a dining table which almost put me off booking as we always eat meals at the table as a family. There is dining table with two benches and a fold up chair which was perfectly adequate for dining.

The Stable is pleasant and the hot tub is really good, but the thing that's not clear on the photos is that it's in the driveway of the host's house and all windows can be overseen by their house.

This might not be an issue to some but the fact you had to have all blinds and curtains closed (as it's all one room) to get dressed (or if you don't want to be seen in your pyjamas!) meant we spent more than we would've liked of the stay in the dark. The bathroom is fine, I'm not sure why there aren't pictures on the listing. It could do with a proper clean though. The central heating thermostat is directly above the single radiator so it's very difficult to get the space warm before the central heating cuts out. The kitchen is good and well equipped, everything you need to cook a Sunday roast. The track to gain access to the property is very rutted and any car that's even slightly lower will ground out, an SUV or 4x4 is required really. An Audi A3 is not suitable and struggled to get along the track. Charging £5 a bag for logs seems pretty unreasonable given the cost of staying here, the 'starter' logs were used up very quickly. Ross on Wye is nearby as is Symonds Yat, well worth a visit. If you're looking for somewhere to stay in this area this might suit, if, like us, you were looking for a great property to explore any area, there are better options with better views and more privacy.

Birch House is fantastic - there really is nothing you need to bring with you to start your break here - the generous welcome pack left by Amber and Aaron enabled us to feed our party of 5 on the first evening - thank you so much.

The furniture and beds are comfortable (firm) and the towels big and luxurious. The house was spotlessly clean throughout. The hot tub was amazing and our party ranging from mid 50s to early teens enjoyed morning, mid afternoon and evening plunges to relax - there are towels in the cupboard for this too. Our teenage children enjoyed playing the selection of games available too. We used Birch House as a base to visit Bath (catch the x31 or 231 bus to avoid expensive parking and long traffic queues in to the centre - you can download an app easily and pay in advance), Bristol Zoo Project, Swindon Outlet Village, Diddly Squat Farm (beware the queue was 3 hours long for the shop) and Corsham Village. We walked to The Great Western pub for a meal and was not disappointed. We highly recommend Birch House for any length of visit - the photos, although fabulous, really do not show how amazing this house truly is. Amber and Aaron's communication from prior and throughout the visit was considerate.

While we had a good holiday at The Cart arms we were disappointed with quite a few things.

    - no heating on when we arrived so it took the large barn most of the evening to warm up. - the corkscrew broke when we tried to open a bottle of wine. We messaged and called the number left to see if they had a spare so we could enjoy a glass of wine on the first night of our holidays. Nobody ever replied to our message or voicemail. So unless we messaged the wrong number this is very disappointing. - the sofa was in a very poor condition with a lot of stains and really needs replacing. - the plates had been put away filthy and all had to be re washed. I also had to clean the filter in the dishwasher as this was really slimy. - the WiFi is also awful and I think it would be good to know this as with no 4G it made researching places to go very frustrating. - on a positive note the upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms were nice and the kitchen was well equipped. - Because of the above issues we would not return or recommend to others. Many thanks Clair
