Holiday Cottages In Amberley

Found nestled within the South Downs National Park this village is a gorgeous and quintessentially British place to stay. Enjoy the green rolling hills and proximity to the coast from the comfort of your very own holiday cottage.

It would be tempting to spend a whole break in Amberley simply relaxing and soaking up the fresh air on a short stroll. However, there is plenty to see and do here. If walking is your cup of tea there are numerous routes to explore and the South Downs Way passes nearby. On your stroll around the village don't miss passing by the castle or popping into the Amberley Working Museum. There is a beer festival held here once a year and the coast is temptingly close. Although you can't quite hear the crashing waves, they are close enough to visit on a day trip.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Martin - Verified booking

This review is written as England is slowly coming out of a third lockdown in April 2021.

My wife and I had to cancel a week in Scotland as their lock down exit plan was too late for our booking. We booked The Hideout at shortish notice and have no regrets that we did. The cottage is pinned on Google maps so there should be no problem in finding it, but the road is single track and narrow so if you drive a Range Rover that has never been outside of Chelsea then be prepared. We were met by Ian the owner who gave us a covid safe hand over and explained all that we needed to know about the cottage. There is a bedroom with a double bed and enough storage space for two people for a couple of weeks. The bathroom is large enough, with a large shower cubicle that is big enough for two people if you like that sort of thing. The main room is a lounge/kitchen with large patio doors opening on to the balcony and offering a wide view of the valley. The kitchen has all you will need [there is an undercounter fridge but no freezer'] and a dishwasher. All untensils/pans/dishes are provided. Under normal conditions my wife and I would be eating out when on holiday but due to the Covid restrictions we did eat at the cottage more than we normally would. There is a two seater sofa in the living area, my wife and I are used to a sofa each at home but we soon got used to it. There is a log burning stove in the living area but we found the cottage warm enough that we did not need to light it. Sadly, although the weather/temperatures were great for our time there, it was not quite warm enough to make use of the pool on the decking area. The cottage is a ten minute drive from Whitchurch and the A40 dual carriageway, so ideally located for touring the local area. Whitchurch is the nearest store for groceries etc, but the pub in Llangrove [The Royal Arms ] does Sunday lunches and evening meals. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it to friends and family.

We liked the village location of Swan View cottage and its proximity to Lechade on Thames with its pubs, cafes and shops.

A pint of milk and a bottle of wine were left for us on arrival which was appreciated. The overall standard of accommodation at the cottage is good. The lounge, kitchen and dining areas are all a decent size and tastefully decorated. The cottage also benefits from a pleasant and a neat garden with seating. There’s also a conservatory which is a lovely place to relax. The cottage is reasonably well equipped, but there was no toast rack, or shaver socket in the bathroom. Only one hand towel was provided, luckily we brought a couple of our own. The freezer needed defrosting and the kettle needed descaling. On the negative side the bathroom was in dire need of a refresh, we were told that there are plans to do this. The shower riser rail is too low and the bathroom window is a poor fit and is draughty. Parking on the drive could be an issue for some as there is an awkward slope which makes it difficult to reverse onto; made worse by the cottage being on a bend restricting visibility. There was no information pack providing the usual useful information you would normally expect; details of local shops, GP, vet, hospital, local amenities, pubs, public transport etc. There was no fire escape plan either which is a serious omission and which needs to be remedied. Overall we felt the cottage was quite good but could be a lot better if the above issues were addressed.

We booked this holiday as the cottage had a swimming pool as advertised by Sykes.

The owner was a really nice guy who informed us on arrival we could not use the pool as it was covered and had not been cleaned. The track to the hideout is very precarious and not easy to locate. The views are fantastic, but then we spoke to another couple who were staying just above us and they informed us that they were there for 7 days, whereas we were there for 6, we paid more than they did. We contacted Sykes when we got back, we spoke to a lady who was quite rude and informed us that the pool is only open in the summer, Is May Spring??? Midsomer's day is the 21st of June is it not. When we came off the phone, we checked the reviews and taken a year earlier in May was a nice open pool and a lady stood there next to it. We have been with Sykes for quite a few years but will no be going back to them again. All they want is your money and this holiday booked was falsely represented by Sykes not by the owner.

Brilliant start, arriving on a cold November afternoon to a lovely log burner lit by Ian before arrival and homemade cake.

Extremely pleasant hosts who had the magic ability to be around when you needed them but completely detached the rest of the time to create a really relaxing environment. A constant supply of logs, kindling and matches provided the small touches that other places often forget, and a second helping of the cake later in our stay. The views are stunning, sat in a very comfortable leather sofa, and, for better weather, a balcony and a swimming pool are delightful. The local pub was within walking distance with an open fire, good food, great beer and, if you are interested, a better glass of Prosecco that is normally reserved for Ian's wife Sally behind the bar. A great environment for walking our dog, lots of paths on your doorstep to take a different walk every day with far ranging views in to both Herefordshire and Monmouthshire. A very pleasant 17 night stay.

A lovely quaint cottage situated in a quiet location but with a blind corner when pulling out of the driveway.

Overall we had a pleasant stay as we used this house as a base so we could visit the airshow. A little bemused when the owner turned up on the Monday the 22nd of July expecting the house to be empty as she had planned to stay there!!! An oversight on your part Sykes?? Not the best maintained property as the bathroom window handle was sheared off leaving a jagged edge. The master bedroom had a double socket hanging off the wall with exposed live wires!! We did contact the mobile number on the booking form to report these hazards. The freezer had to be defrosted as the drawers were frozen in place and couldn’t be moved and the top of the fridge hadn’t ever seen a duster as it was covered with dust. Generally the inside of the house could do with a freshen up as it is looking tired but on a positive note it was comfy and a nice place to stay.
