What our customers say about their holidays
Peter - Verified booking
We have stayed in many cottages all over the uk with different holiday companies and have used Sykes before, however this experience has left us feeling we will not use Sykes again.
The cottage had a number of extremely disappointing issues and is misrepresented on the Sykes site. If we were aware of misrepresentation then we would not have booked it. Location - on the Skye site for Tate cottage on the map it marks the cottage to be on Church Street, very close to the town centre. However it is actually on Horse Road 0.3 miles away. This is also directly opposite and ship manufacturing yard (Parkol) with large cranes, this is not what we expected for a view. Outside the cottage - The Sykes site did say âThat the property neighboring to Tate Cottage, is undergoing some temporary building workâ. We thought this would be fine as we were planning on being out most of the days while there. However you have to pass the entrance to the cottage that was having the work done and they have used there garden as a skip with piles of building waste just thrown on the grass, that clearly been there for some time. Again the view of this is appalling. There was a small table and chores outside to sit out however the table was rusty and could have marked our clothing if in contact. Inside the cottage - The moment we walked in the smell of damp was overpowering, just awful. We opened windows etc but could not get rid of it. some of the walls were cladded with wood and you could see the damp coming through. I also found multiple dehumidifier boxes in locations around the house, clearly a big problem. My wife suffers with asana and breathing issues and this made it horrendous. For 3 days all she wanted to do was go home. Very very disappointing and would not recommend this property to stay in. I also have many photos if you wish to see. I think someone from Sykes need to visit this property to see it first hand.

The Grace Escape is a wonderful base for a relaxing family holiday by the sea. We have been to Whitby a couple of times before so we were prepared for problems with parking anywhere near our accommodation but we were lucky enough to find on-road parking fairly close by. The Grace Escape was really well equipped for a self catering holiday although it could do with some oven proof dishes (minor point but worth noting as we do like to cook family meals when we're away). There is very little cupboard space for food etc - maybe one of the two cupboards full of glasses could be left empty. Beds and bedding were lovely and comfy but ceiling height entering the kids bedroom on the 3rd floor is VERY low which was a bit of an issue for my 6' teenage son, but he had mastered it by the end of the week! The property details say that there is no central heating so we went prepared with blankets etc but central heating has now been installed and the house was lovely and warm. The views of the harbour from all the rooms were wonderful and the location was perfect - close to town but away from the main hustle and bustle and we would definitely recommend. Treats for both us and our dog on arrival were also a lovely touch ??

The Grace Escape is a lovely property. Fabulous standard and facilities through out. Lovely views from the lounge and bedroom windows. Whitby is a town of two sides, split by the river and joined together by the old swing bridge. There is a surprise around every corner. Lovely narrow streets and quaint shops. The Historic Abbey and Church and Captain Cooks Museum all worth a visit. There is great quality food at the restaurants and cafés. The Marine and the Rusty Shears both deserve a special mention. We enjoyed the Bark Endeavour boat ride and also the speed boat Commando, both worth the money. Great walks out along the West Cliff or beach to The White House which has stunning views over the golf course. A friendly welcome from everyone through out Whitby and we particularly noticed how dog friendly the town is. We never got around to delving into the Dracula history or doing the ghost walk so looking forward to that next time!

The cottage was clean, homely, comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay. The welcome book was really helpful and we enjoyed our welcome pack goodies. The property is located outside of the busy streets and so it was nice and quiet whilst only being a five minute walk or so to the shops, restaurants and other things that Whitby has to offer. There is a lot of steps to get up to the property and inside the property but that just meant we left fitter than when we arrived, the views from the cottage were definitely worth it. Not always easy to park on the road by the cottage but on the two days we couldn't park we found the car parks reasonably priced for long stay and were free overnight from 6pm to 9am, the host did provide permits but the permit area is a little further away so decided to use the car park overnight. I would use this cottage again when returning to Whitby.
