Guests say

Thimble Hall is a charming cottage praised for its superb location and picturesque setting. Guests appreciate the property's rural feel and proximity to local amenities, making it an ideal base for exploring. While the cottage's aesthetic and warmth are commended, some guests suggest improvements in cleanliness and maintenance.

Guests have reported issues with cleanliness, including dust, hair, and old food remnants. The property seems to require more thorough cleaning, as some areas appear neglected for extended periods.

The location is highly praised for its easy access to Grasmere, privacy, and proximity to nature, with sightings of wildlife like red squirrels adding to the charm.

The cottage is generally considered comfortable and warm. However, some guests find the futon-style beds and seating less comfortable, which may affect those with mobility issues.

Facilities are well-regarded, but several guests have noted issues with the TV remote, boiler, and kitchen appliances. Maintenance responsiveness is a concern, with some problems not addressed promptly.

There is no mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness. Basic supplies were found lacking, and guests were expected to purchase everyday items, which suggests a need for improvement in this area.

About this property

Just a mintues’ walk from the centre of Grasmere lies the beautiful Thimble Hall, a detached Lakeland cottage with lots of little luxuries to enjoy. This is a wonderful property for friends and family to create memories in the Lakes.

Stepping into the cottage there is plenty of space for coats and boot before heading into the open plan kitchen / diner. The high vaulted ceiling adds to the spacious feel of this room and the dial aspect windows offer views across the grounds and woodland beyond. This luxury kitchen has everything you need to serve up a hearty Lakeland breakfast before heading out to the nearby fells. The sitting room has cosy low beams, oak flooring and woodburning stove (wood not provided). Relax in the comfortable sofas surrounded by beautiful artwork after a busy day. Larger families will enjoy the second sitting room, an ideal spot to curl up with a good book. Head upstairs to find the three beautiful double bedrooms and luxurious family bathroom. Thimble Hall is set in its own wooded garden with private patio and outdoor furniture and BBQ. Perfect for al fresco dining in the summer.

A range of places to eat from Michelin Starred The Forest Side just a fifteen-minute walk from the cottage, local bistros to the cosy village pubs. Walks around in this part of the Lake District from gentle rambles along the lakeshore or to take in the stunning views from Loughrigg Fell or head higher onto the fells to bag a Wainwright or two including Fairfield, Helvellyn and Helm Crag all of which the more adventurous can conquer direct from the door.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family have been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century and Grasmere Lake, plus Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.

However the maintenance needs to be improved. It was clean enough and warm when we arrived. We saw the cleaner who told us there was an issue with the heating and that someone would attend the property. The upstairs heating didn’t work at all. Luckily it was quite mild so didnt matter and downstairs was fine. No one came all week. There was poor provision of basics such as toilet roll which ran out after less than a day. The village shop was closed so it was a 15 minute drive for toilet roll!!! Enough wood for one fire at least would be great. Three dishwasher tablets and poor cleaning equipment. The drying rack is broken. Overall we had a wonderful stay but compared to friends in cottages on the village it wasn’t well supplied.

We were disappointed that there were no basic supplies, eg, salt and pepper shakers were empty, no ice or ice tray, no washing powder. Even the cleaning pack would not have been sufficient for our stay if extra dishwasher tablets had not been left by someone else. There was also only one roll of toilet paper in each bathroom for four people for a four night stay. We have travelled a long way and didn't expect to have to purchase basic everyday items such as these. We would have expected a few more basic items to be provided. Also, the bathroom heating was on when we arrived but went off overnight and never came on again (and we couldn't see how to do it manually).

We had people from Berlin with us who were in the Lakes for the first time and loved it! The location is perfect with easy access to Grasmere yet set in grounds that make it feel very rural and private!
