What our customers say about their holidays
Mrs Pemberton-McDonald - Verified booking
What a fabulous week we’ve had. Lovely little place, so comfortable and well equipped. Probably the most well equipped and homely cottage we’ve ever stayed in. It was nice to come ‘home’ to every day, and especially on the one day the rain was torrential! Very comfy bed! The welcome pack was much appreciated, and the extra touches of biscuits and cereal, even coffee pods, although owner has reignited the husband’s love affair with Tunnocks tea cakes. Friendly, kind and informative host. We enjoyed several walks on Bamburgh beach, and on Beadnell beach, and one day we walked from Boulmer to Alnmouth and back along the beach. We visited Berwick for the first time - what a surprise it was. A lovely town with a nice walk around the walls, some great independent shops and a very cute cafe tucked under the bridge. We’ve enjoyed watching the birds in the garden and the pigeons nesting in the monkey puzzle tree. We were very sad to leave and hope we will return…thank you. P.S. we couldn’t look at the picture by the dining table without seeing Mick Hucknell….

We stayed at Sandstrath in August 2020, we enjoyed it so much that we booked it again for May bank holiday weekend 2021. The property is light and airy with everything you need. If you’re a little unsteady on your feet then stairs might be a problem. A nice welcoming touch is the bag of local produce, coffee, tea, biscuits and bread along with some milk. Views out the back over the small but very adequate garden and it’s fields with sheep. A great time waster watching what they’re up to. If you have a dog and like walking it’s just a case of out the door, cross the road and you’re into the sand dunes and onto the beach. Go left and it’s a lovely walk up to Budle bay past the castle along the beach. Head right and go to Seahouses. The locals are lovely, welcoming and like a chat. The locals pubs in Bamburgh are only a short walk too. I’d book it again, in fact just been having a look at what dates are available.

The monkey puzzle cottage was ok, to be fair it was lovely and clean, bed linen n towels were lovely, but could have done with a lighter duvet as we were boiling in bed at night! The cottage was well appointed and in great area for all the tourist attractions. Outside the cottage the gardens were very untidy? Impossible to sit in the garden with the dog as garden not secure and really needed tidying up! The only other complaint was the combi boiler, it was situated on the same wall as the bed head and at 6 am when the boiler awoke it was a terrible noise that reverberated into you in bed n gave me migraines! Hence, you must turn off the boiler before you go to bed at night. The tv was also not where you would sit on the settee but to the side of the settee????? Plus electric fire wasn’t working! But really, the house was well appointed, just needed fine tuning.

We had a wonderful week here with our 2 young children and our dog. The location is brilliant, handy to have cafes, pubs and the co-op within a minutes walk. Apartment was clean with all the basics. The only thing we missed was a washing machine but we used a local laundy service during our stay which was a 5 minute drive away. The car park is very close by and it was handy to have the parking permit as we could use it in other carparks in Northumberland too. There were a few bits and bobs around the apartment that require fixing (broken headboard on one of the beds, loose skirting board trim) but I have detailed these seperately and we reported it to the office downstairs. Overall a good apartment. I would stay again.

We had a lovely time at Monkey Puzzle Retreat. Charlie the owner was very relaxed and helpful, said he would be there whatever time we arrived. He provided a Welcome Pack of bread, milk, bacon, lovely fresh eggs, milk, butter, tea, coffee etc and a very high standard of cookware and tableware. It's a real home-from-home, with books, jigsaws, TV, radio, alarm clock, hairdryers, recliner chair - everything you could want. There's plenty of garden which our 2 very active dogs loved and we found footpaths to open country from a cut through the hedge at the bottom of the drive. Charlie lives in the next door house and recommended good places to visit and eat, so we really enjoyed our Northumbrian holiday.
