Late Availability Holiday Cottages and Self Catering on Dartmoor or nearby

Dartmoor National Park in Devon covers 350 square miles and is bordered by Torbay, Exeter and Plymouth. Newton Abbot, Bovey Tracey and Ashburton are also worthy of mention. Between here and Okehampton you will be hard pushed to find more than a handful of hamlets, but some stunning scenery. And as you pass the ruined mine head of Wheal Betsy, consider that this was once one of the most profitable, modern and philanthropic mines in the world, and all due to the presence of water power. Anyway, this is a good place to stop for walkers, riders, and cyclists, and has an excellent pub or two. On the northern edge of the National Park is Okehampton, a great centre for walkers and the start of the annual Ten Tors race. This is a two day 'yomp' across the moor for the young, the oldest participant allowed is only twenty, and takes place over three different courses, dependent on age. The longest route takes you over 55kms and you have to carry all your supplies and equipment, so there is no nipping into the Prison for a cosy night with the warders. The Army have a substantial training camp just outside the town on the moor and look after the 2400 teenagers who try this event every year. The town is basically grey, being made of the local granite, and has most of the local amenities you would expect in a small town anywhere else in England. There is a large ruined Norman Castle, a museum of Dartmoor Heritage, and a couple of shops that will kit out the novice or experienced walker. A range of Devon holiday cottages, pubs, restaurants, and cafes completes the picture. To the north the green and rolling hills and cottages in north Devon, to the south, the bleak and granite-strewn moor land. Now this is not to say that there is nothing to do on Dartmoor as you can try walking from one side to the other, or go by pony. Challenge the elements with your camping prowess, but be prepared the weather can change here just as quickly as it can in the Scottish Highlands. You can visit Neolithic cairns and stone circles, secluded country houses, castles and nature reserves; see hidden waterfalls, or even try and find the famous Prison. This is the only wilderness in England so if you bump into anyone else you will be unlucky. Haytor is a tract of moor and heathland. The distinctive granite tor is common land and has long been an attraction to visitors. Dartmoor National Park was immortalised recently in Warhorse, the Hollywood blockbuster filmed on location on Dartmoor. The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust's charitable mission is to preserve the indigenous famous Dartmoor Pony; unfortunately this tough breed is at serious risk, the herd is numbering less than 300 mares. Buckfast Abbey founded in the 11th century, in Buckfastleigh from where The South Devon Railway operates a heritage steam railway to Totnes running alongside the River Dart. Widecombe Fair, well known in the folk song of the same name featuring Uncle Tom Cobley (and all!) is famously held on the 2nd Tuesday in September, attracting thousands of visitors to the tiny Dartmoor village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Rosalind - Verified booking

The Bothy is one of the loveliest cottages we have ever stayed at.

From the moment we rounded the bend in the track and saw it framed by idyllic fields, and with the backdrop of a blue, sparkling sea, we knew it was going to be a special place, and it was. It is completely self-contained - we didn't see another human being (apart from a farmer in the distance driving a hay baler and the occasional person who came to feed the sheep) the entire time we were in the cottage, and all we could hear was the wind in the trees, the birds and the aforementioned sheep, who were our welcome companions for the week. The views, from around the cottage and through the lounge windows, are sublime, and you can walk down the hill and into Slapton Wood which, again, was deserted and felt like our own private woodland. We heard so many species of birds, and saw both a barn owl and a tawny owl, which was wonderful! The cottage itself was spotlessly clean, and contained everything we needed for the week. The beds were really comfortable and, combined with the complete darkness and silence at night, gave us a week of great sleep. The hot tub is a lovely addition, particularly when sitting in it at night under the stars. The location of The Bothy is also ideal - we had days out in Brixham, Dartmouth and Salcombe, as well as a drive over Dartmoor. We walked the half a mile to one of the pubs in the village, and Slapton Nature Reserve (well worth a visit) and Slapton Sands are only a mile away. If you're looking for a peaceful, relaxing and nature-filled holiday, we couldn't recommend The Bothy more!

Wisteria cottage was the perfect cottage.

Stepping through the door we were greeted by a lovely slice of homemade cake, a bunch of fresh flowers, a packet of biscuits, a box of chocolates, a pint of fresh milk in the fridge and not to forget a jar of treats for our 4 legged family member. The cottage was warm and cosy and equipped with everything you could ever need and more. Darton and Maxine were the perfect hosts. Maxine looked after the cottage to a very high standard and served us in the restaurant she was always very pleasant to talk to and polite. Darton was the Chef who cooked the perfect Sunday Roast, which we ate in the restaurant and a lovely 3 course evening meal which he kindly delivered to the cottage as the restaurant was closed for evening meals at this time of the year (March). The cottage location was a perfect base for exploring the area. We would definitely recommend this Cottage to anyone and we will definitely be back for another stay.

Excellent stay and a lovely cottage.

The owners have gone above and beyond and have thought of everything you could possibly need, very impressed. We were welcomed to some lovely home made cake which was a delicious treat after our long drive,a box of chocolates, biscuits and a bottle of wine, They even thought to put a pint of milk in the fridge which again was a very nice thoughtful touch. The cottage itself was cosy but felt bigger because of the openness of the design which gives it a nice airy and spacious feel. It’s a bit quirky and works well. For me it was a perfect holiday home. Even the wildlife was impressive, one morning a weasel ran across the lawn. My only slight criticism was that the bed felt slightly sunken in the middle,so not the perfect sleep but a new mattress would fix that. But overall we loved it ,very good stay and very well equipped ,I would happily book again next time I fancy a break in Devon.

This was our third stay at The Bothy, and sadly our last.

We have had two exceptionally great holidays here in the past, but it seems the general care for the property is not obviously a priority for the owners anymore. We can not fault the location and setting of The Bothy, which is just so unique and the perfect place to get away for a relaxing break. Sadly, the bedding was very unclean on arrival along with generally everything in the house, we had to wash all the bedding and mattress protectors. Everything in the kitchen cupboards was really grubby, and had to be washed up. Not only was the cleanliness dreadful throughout, but a lot of things in the house don’t work properly or are broken, the list is endless! A real shame as it used to be our favourite place to stay and was always immaculately clean and well cared for, but unfortunately the location and setting do not make up for these issues.

Lovely little cottage, fabulous welcome pack, had everything well thought out and spotlessly clean.

The downside, unfortunately, is the access to the property. Had I known that it was up a steep slope with three lots of uneven steps, I would not have booked. From photograph it appears to just be up the first flight of steps (I'd be ok with that), but then there was a gravel slope, more steps (thank goodness for hand rail, the first step is quite challenging), then more loose gravel on another slope before final three steps. PHEW. I'm waiting for new knee and loose bricks and walking sticks do not mix! Could do with a new settee too. Peace and quiet was fabulous,, woken each morning by a song thrush and robin - lovely. I'd certainly recommend Wisteria Cottage but would suggest the access issue is more accurately documented and highlighted as not being suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Otherwise perfect ;)
