What our customers say about their holidays

  • Sophia - Verified booking

The lodge was so nice, and views were just breathtaking!

We loved everything about our little break. We got the hang of the fire pit easily! Just make sure you follow the instructions in the book and you won’t go wrong. We went to a Texaco petrol station nearby and they had bags of logs and kindling for £4.50 which was useful to know! The property was gated so our dog could have the run of outside and didn’t get out. Notes for consideration if you’re staying: - I would say make sure you bring an additional tea towel and bin bags if you’re staying for more than 2 nights. We stayed for 4 nights and got 1 tea towel and 1 bin bag. Maybe if you messaged staff you might get more but we didn’t bother and bought our own to make do! - The couch isn’t comfortable so again, if you’re intending on spending time in the lodge I’d suggest taking your own pillows or beanbags to make it a bit comfortable. - We stayed 4 nights and did have enough bath towels, however we used them off the spare bed too. So just make sure if you’re going as a family and for more than 2 nights, maybe consider taking additional towel each - The drive up to the lodge was quite narrow and not really for the weak if you aren’t a confident driver! I’d just say bear that in mind before booking - we were fine but I know some might not be. They aren’t negative points as such, just things we would consider next time. However would go back in a heart beat. Really nice lodge and gave us the break we were looking for!

On first arriving was a disappointing start as we were informed that the outside lights were not working.

Not helpful when check in is after 4 and you’d daughter has mobility issues, this issue was not addressed for the duration of our stay despite raising the issue again with all the rest of the problems. The cabin looked nice enough but things soon started to go wrong. The freezer wasn’t turned on for our arrival, which meant that some of our food defrosted and had to be thrown away, the main doors bolt for the stable door was held in with tissue so that instantly fell out, the fridge door won’t stay closed, we went out for the day and returned to it open resulting in more wasted food, the pots and pans had not been cleaned properly after the previous guests and were unusable as they were disgusting, this was rectified by the owner but sadly the pots were from b&m and the coating came off the bottom and mixed into our food. The cooker was faulty and again we informed the owner who came out tried to light the problem ring and said oh we’ve had problems with this before but it was left not fully working. We were offered £50 as compensation for not being able to cook Christmas dinner in the cabin Everything was dirty old and tired, there was clothes still in the wardrobes and drawers when we arrived, old food left in the kitchen cupboards and lots of items and dust under the bed. All in all the location is wonderful and with some tlc the cabin could be amazing but given all the issues we left early feeling ripped off and very disappointed

On arrival the Lodge was pristinely clean and tidy, with little welcoming touches like prosecco and Welsh cakes which were greatly appreciated after a long drive.

The photographs taken for the Lodge's listing on booking sites are accurate, except they don't show the birds and the sheep who sometimes come right up to the fence to say hello! For us, the biggest draw of Cilan Lodge has to be its hot tub. It doesn't disappoint - solid construction, incredible views, jacuzzi massage jets, pre-heated and ready to go whenever you are. It's ever-so welcome when coming back from a full day of hill walking. The tub's best feature though is its seclusion. We've stayed at other places where the 'private hot tub' is partially overlooked by other tubs or properties. Not at Cilan Lodge though - the tub and patio are entirely enclosed on three sides, plus the roof, so the nearest place where you could be seen from is several hundred meters away across multiple fields. The Lodge is well situated right in the middle of North Wales, so there's something for everyone within a reasonable travel time by car. It's 15min from the quaint little towns of Bala and Corwen, 25min from Llangollen, 40min from the adventurous activities in Ffestiniog, 45min from the centre of the larger towns of Wrexham and Oswestry, and 1hr from Llanberis for Mt. Snowdon. Overall, very happy with our mid-week break at Cilan Lodge. It's perfect for couples looking for a retreat. We'd thoroughly recommend it and will look forward to staying again next time we're in North Wales.

We can't say enough positive things about Cilan Lodge.

It's exactly as it looks on the listing, clean, comfortable and the views are amazing. The local villages are small with limited eateries but the ones we tried were all great with good food and friendly service. It's also a good central base to visit the surrounding areas. We loved waking up in the morning to look over the fields with a cup of tea and some Welsh cakes and finishing our days walking in the hot tub with a glass of gin and tonic. Perfect for a relaxing or active break. Our only feedback would be that the outside lights are on a timer so sometimes we came home in the dark (8pm or so) and there were a lot of bugs around. They also stay on until around 2am. There are black out curtains but i'm a particularly light sleep so would recommend bug spray and an eye mask!
