What our customers say about their holidays

I booked The Stable for a family weekend break, 2 adults, 2 children under 12 and our dog.

I didn't have much in the way of expectation as we hadn't been to this part of the UK before but we had the most wonderful break. The photos of The Stable don't quite do it justice. It is beautifully decorated, thoughtfully equipped and comfortable. The views from the sitting room and main bedroom were breath taking. To add to this was the truly quaint surprise of the Steam Train coming along the bottom of the garden, some way away but visible and audible. It was the icing on the cake for us. The Stable and other apartments are on the main road, closer than we thought but the birds in the trees were more audible than traffic and so the road was of no real concern and caused no issues. Plenty of parking spaces for the 4 apartments too. Before we arrived we recieved a call from the owner to check estimated arrival times and to let us know we could be in the apartement an hour earlier than check in time of 3, which was lovely. A welcome basket with Easter goodies was warmly recieved and so thoughtful. The Stable is located 10 mins from Puzzlewood which we thoroughly recommend. 20 mins ish from Tintern where there is an Abbey we recommend seeing and 20 mins ish from Chepstow where we looked around the castle. The Stable is within walking distance of the High Street with a Tesco and petrol station and some lovely restaurants/take aways close by. The park and cafe set behind Lydney High Street were a lovely surprise, as was the public footpath opposite the house to which access is gained in the last road on the left as she come to The Stable, behind the houses to the right as you enter the road. We had breakfast in the garden overlooking the forest. The garden is beautiful and well kept and thoughtfully placed outdoor furniture is dotted around for sunbathing, eating and just watching the birds. Our children have told me they want to come back. We might just do that!

Stayed in the Tack Room of Highbury Coach House for a week with family and 2x dogs.

Apartment was lovely, gardens are amazing and the views breathtaking. The owners are terrific people very friendly and approachable and we felt like we had known them for years. The whole experience for us was peaceful and tranquil, relaxing and recharging of ones batteries. We would recommend staying here to anyone who loves nature, as the Forest Of Dean is all around. Shops and amenities are literally minuets away (by car) During our stay we visited Go Ape (adult kids went on the Segways, dogs fully worn out walking around the forest) Taurus Crafts (unfortunately quite a few of the little shops on their site were closed, i can only presume due to covid which was a shame, but we were still able to wander about window shopping this is dog friendly too) Dean Forest Railway was brilliant again dog friendly, museum and gift shop, the train rides are nice as it takes you into the forests which we enjoyed. If you like steam trains then this is for you, i would book well well in advance as when we tried on the day we arrived (to apartment, as you can see the steam from here and hear the sounds) it was fully booked, maybe due to covid and social distancing i'm not sure, but we went on the diesel train which we were happy with. Bathurst Park is dog friendly one side and small human friendly the other, our two loved it. The gardens are impeccably done, everywhere is clean and tidy, our adult kids rode their bikes around while the tired out doggos relaxed and recovered. There is a cafe on site too. All in all if your looking for a peaceful getaway/holiday where you cater for yourself and do as little or as much as you want, then Highbury Coach House is for you. We would stay there again as it suited us so well. 10/10 and 5* across the board from us and the dogs xx

Our week at The Stables was most enjoyable, in spite of a couple of minor niggles.

I was initially disappointed to find that the property was on a busy main road, having been given the impression from the photographs on the website that the property was in a more rural location. However, the road traffic noise was not as intrusive as feared, and the location made it well placed for getting into Lydney for shopping and for accessing the Forest of Dean. We can recommend a look at Lydney harbour, Tintern Abbey, a walk around Cannop Ponds and a ride on the Dean Forest steam railway (audible and just visible through the trees at the rear). After a long car journey to get there, the steps up to the property to carry luggage up to the apartment were a challenge, so the generous welcome gift of snacks and treats as well as provisions for a hot drink on arrival was much appreciated. Due to the single glazing, there was condensation inside the windows on colder mornings, but this will hopefully be resolved with the addition of secondary glazing, which is intended by the owners (subject to planning permission). The apartment was nevertheless very cosy and comfortable, clean, well equipped and attractively decorated, with a quirky, eclectic collection of artwork and ornaments. We can certainly recommend a stay at The Stables.

    This appartment had everything!

Charm and comfort; beautiful outside spaces and good parking. Also an absolutely terrific view! Elaine rang before we arrived to check we knew where we were going and to make arrangements to leave the keys etc and spoke to us before we left, which was nice. The kitchen area was well appointed and had all the utensils needed…… my only criticism was that there was little space to store food such as tinned goods and bread. Lovely comfy reclining sofas…… great sitting area! Excellent wi-fi service too! The bathroom was very good, the heated towel rail was enough to take the chill off! Both bedrooms were nicely furnished and comfy but the main bedroom wardrobe was full of cleaning equipment and the ironing board so had limited hanging space for longer items. Not really an issue for us as we just used the other wardrobe. Great location, close to Lydney and not far to Coleford or the Forest itself. Thank you for a lovely home from home!

I cannot praise Elaine & Doug enough.

The Tackroom accommodation is absolutely beautiful, spotlessly clean, comfortable and spacious. It had everything we required for our weeks stay. While we were there, we went to Blenheim Palace for the day. Doug and Elaine very kindly looked after our 2 West highland terriers, and both dogs could not have been looked after any better. They also sent me pictures so I could see they were happy while not with us. They put up Christmas decorations for us arriving, which was lovely. Again they very kindly asked if we would be something we would like or not. If we visit this area again, We would definitely stay again at one of Elaine & Doug’s accommodations, and would not hesitate in recommending them to others. Thank you again for providing us with a beautiful holiday home
