What our customers say about their holidays

We've just had a fabulous stay at The Old Thatch over Christmas with our two dogs.
The cottage is perfect, and larger than it appears in the photos. Has a well equipped kitchen and powerful shower. The fridge is a little small if you were planning to do a lot of cooking during your stay, but it was fine for our needs. We also loved the glass surrounded roof terrace where you could sit and enjoy the sound of the stream running past the back of the cottage. And to watch the nesting crows in the evening. Quite magical. We parked right outside the door for our stay, but there was other space opposite at the Rec entrance. Incidentally, if you have dogs, take them through the Rec, behind the tennis courts to the right and you will find an enclosed dog walking area with benches and poo bins so you can safely let your dogs off lead without issue. This was invaluable for us as we have one deaf dog and a new puppy with very little recall. The cottage's location is truly excellent, within a few metres of the High Street's shops, cafes and pubs and local hotel. All do food and are dog friendly. The local butchers are really good, with locally sourced produce. And if you love antiques and pets, the Pets and Ossibilities shop is a must! We noted a previous review from October mentioned the cottage wasn't ideal for dogs owners in wet weather due to the cream carpets throughout. That was actually a really helpful comment as we then came equipped. We took a plastic dust sheet with us*, which we spread from the inside steps across the first part of the carpet. And then used a couple of dog travel panels to fence that area in, effectively making a small paw drying / muddy boots space right inside the front door. Worked a treat for the entire break. Also having travel barrier helped as the door opens straight onto the lane (albeit a very quiet one) but for peace of mind, we found it really helped. *There is a very good home and hardware shop in the village where you can purchase a dust sheet if you didn't bring one. Great dogs walks in the immediate area down to The Saltmarshes and Porlock Weir, with more dog friendly businesses including the sister pub to The Top Ship in the village; The Bottom Ship, which also does food. Only slight issue was the wifi signal wasn't the best so was quite slow at times. However, that wasn't an issue for us as we were on a break from the real world! But if you were working online you may find it frustrating. But overall, we loved every minute of our stay at The Old Thatch, and the people of Porlock are incredibly friendly and helpful, so we would highly recommend at stay there.

This farm cottage exceeded expectations as did the warm welcome of the host Nicky whom couldn't have been more hospitable.
The location is perfect with lovely walks along the river to the local village, Tarr steps and many other walking routes locally. We had two dogs who had free range to wander the garden and grounds. The cottage has been decorated beautifully with some lovely details, fresh flowers, starter tea, coffee, milk, sugar, dog treats, everything you could possible need in the bathroom (including rain forest shower) towels etc. The 2 bedrooms were a lovely size with beautiful views & huge double beds (New mattresses too). The garden is also lovely place to relax with the sun on it all day. Everything you could possible need is provided from Barbeque (already just to light up) beautiful log fire (with plenty of logs) large fridge freezer, washing machine (and washing line & pegs), dishwasher (including tabs), cooker (even picnic hamper) toaster, coffee pot, large bottled water (as local water is high in copper content) however bottled water is provided free of charge and on arrival a lovely bottle of wine. Plenty of crockery, saucepans, pots, pans and containers even kitchen roll, clingfilm, kitchen roll, mop & bucket, hoover etc etc ...the list goes on. (Also plenty of parking directly outside cottage. There is also Kennels available should you wish to go out for the day without your dogs. I can't recommend this cottage enough, everything you could possible need is there, we were the first to stay in the cottage as its just been refurbished, I have stayed in many cottages across the UK over the past years and this without a doubt is the best one I've stayed in, perfect location and wonderfully warm and welcoming hosts. (The directions to the cottage were also very clear and easy to follow)

The cottage is located in a very nice and quiet farm.
It has a nice path walking down to the river and to some beautiful views. The private indoor swimming pool is a big plus point. The owners were kind enough to let us use it whenever we needed as we only stayed for 2 days. The pool is very secluded facing the owners private garden but as no one was out and about it meant full privacy for me and my partner. We also walked in to some lovely fresh farm milk waiting in the fridge. Keep in mind this is a self-cattering cottage which means you need to bring everything yourself. Basics such as towels & a roll of toilet paper are provided, but any extra's, oil or other food products need to be brought by yourself (it does state this in the advert). Also keep in mind, as this is a farm there are several dogs there which are free to roam. They are very friendly and curious but be aware to expect them to walk in if you leave the door open lol! We had a lovely time there and will definitely be coming back. Only down side we had was that the shower drain was slightly clogged which meant the water wasn't draining as well and filling up so we had to quickly wash and leave before it overflew.

A lovely little cottage full of character.
A cosy lounge with wood burner and two big double bedrooms, we enjoyed a very comfortable stay. Parking wasnât a problem and the helpful pointers from the owners meant we could always park close to the cottage. The church bells do ring regularly and throughout the night but they didnât bother us and we were sleeping in the back bedroom with the window open, this didnât stop us from enjoying many a good nights sleep. We very much appreciated all of the guidance provided by the owners on local walks, things to do and places to eat. Dunster Castle is approx 5 mins walks from the cottage and Dunster beach about 25 mins. The little utility room was great to hang wetsuits after a trip to Wimbleball Lake for a spot of Paddle boarding, as was the washing machine after getting wet on a walk back from Dunster beach. The cottage was furnished to a high standard throughout, the bathroom is downstairs but that didnât bother us, shower over bath nice and powerful and always lots of hot water. Both bedrooms were a great size, bedding and extra soft blankets were plentiful. Thanks for a great week.

The cottage was lovely , cosy and clean, warm and very peaceful with swallows nesting nearby.
The pool was lovely, warm and private and very welcome, I overcame my fear of water here got a bit of confidence and will now be able to have swimming lessons. There are some beautiful horses nearby, two lovely new ones had just arrived named Hamish and Bertie and it was lovely to see them when we went out daily, as well as some lovely friendly dogs which never disturbed us at all. There is no noise surprisingly when the estate trains many lovely horses and unless you saw them pass you would never know they were there. This cottage has been fantastic, private , quiet, peaceful and just what is needed to get away from the noisy towns elsewhere. The owner and staff were so kind and helpful and the owner was available whenever needed, which was not often as the holiday was perfect. I would go back again when I am able to, maybe next year. I would highly recommend this property to anyone wanting a nice peaceful holiday, as a base to sightsee or just a bolt hole to get away from it all.
