Holiday Cottages in Northumberland

Northumberland sits on the border with Scotland, a rugged county peppered With over 70 castle sites, including the mighty Bamburgh Castle. Combined with an extensive footpath network, 39 square miles of Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Hadrian's Wall, and easy train access, it's no wonder that it is a hotspot for last-minute breaks.

Reasons to holiday in Northumberland

Beaches

Northumberland's beaches vary from small bays to long beaches, often with a castle or ruin nearby. These sandy beaches are one of the main attractions in Northumberland. But pack your coat as the battering winds and rain can appear seemingly out of nowhere. The dramatic weather and coasal vistas create an appeal that many are drawn to, especially out of season.

The most popular beach in Northumberland is probably in Bamburgh. With the vast castle overlooking the beach, there are great photo opportunities and at two and a half kilometres long, it's an ideal afternoon walk. At Last Minute Cottages we offer a wide range of coastal properties in Northumberland, putting you within striking distance of the sands.

Walking

Northumberland's main walking attraction is Hadrian's Wall. The 1,902-year-old Roman ruins remain, along with well maintained forts and other points of interest along the route. A large section of the wall is in Northumberland, with Roman towns like Corbridge just a few minutes drive from Hadrian's Wall.

There are several nearby towns like Hexham and Haltwhistlemaking it easy to plan your historical adventure with us, safe in the knowledge our best price guarantee means we always show you our cheapest available price.

Castles

As the nations most fortified county, these giant stone structures are hard to miss. Many of these buildings have a rich historical tale to tell and remain fascinating monuments to the history of Great Britain.

Alongside the aforementioned Bamburgh Castle, other sites worth considering are Dunstanburgh castle near Alnwick and Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island, which is well worth the boat trip.

If you are planning a trip with friends or family don't forget to sign up to access our exclusive members only discounts, meaning you can bag a deal even at the last-minute.

Where to Stay in Northumberland

  • Bamburgh is a prime location for walks on the beach and castle exploration.

  • Corbridge is for those keen to see Hadrian's Wall and other Roman sites.

  • Alnwick is one for movie fans; Harry Potter, Transformers and Downton Abbey have all used the town's famous castle for filming.

  • Berwick-upon-Tweed is the last English town before the Scottish border, with medieval castle ruins, a harbour and a beach.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Barbara - Verified booking

We had a pleasant week in the Turkey House, which is peacefully set in lovely countryside.

The owners live next door, so at hand if you need anything but the cottage is very private, with views over the fields. We mostly eat in on holiday, and the kitchen is very well equipped indeed. We had to have the heating on a couple of times (Scotland in August, not unexpected!) and the place heated up very quickly. Excellent hot water too. There are seats and a table outside should you be fortunate with the weather. One pouring wet day we went to Berwick upon Tweed, which is only about six miles away and has supermarkets, cafes etc, and is also very much worth a visit anyway, as it is a very interesting place. We had our bikes with us and were able to cycle straight out the door into the quiet lanes - two pubs in villages a mile or two away are easy to visit. There are also details of local walks in a folder in the cottage. It was wonderful to get a holiday after everything that has been going on, and we had a lovely week here.

Our second stay at this cottage, and we enjoyed it as much as before.

The facilities are all fine. It is clean, cosy and comfortable. We did have the boiler 'lock out' (apparently a rare occurrence but it was blowing a real hoolie right onto the back wall vent which we assumed triggered it). It was no problem to deal with as there were instructions in the visitor folder, guiding us to a You Tube video. It was sorted in moments, although getting the boiler front off took a bit of firkling; you need to pull at the bottom. The icing on the cake was the wonderful Dark Skies of Northumberland. Not only could we see a beautiful night sky, including the Milky Way, from right outside the front of the cottage, but were also fortunate enough to have the opportunity to photograph the Aurora. Not just once, on our first evening there, but also again (even more spectacular as we were able to see it by the naked eye) on the night before we left!

There was mostly no hot water.

Occasionally some scalding water would trickle out of the kitchen tap, but mostly we had to wash up in cold water adding in using boiled water from the kettle. We tried returning on the hot water switch at the boiler several times. We managed to run a couple of shallow baths, but on most days had only cold water. The electric shower also does not work properly, and tends to alternate between scalding hot and cold. The water also tastes horrible, like it comes from rusty old pipes and is full of metallic deposits. And for this amount of money I really think the owner could have provided a decent size non-stick frying pan, instead of the old style small ones. I do not think Sykes should be renting cottages that do not have a reliable hot water supply or at least a reliable hot shower.

I’d like to start by saying that we had a lovely time in the cottage.

It is peaceful and very relaxing. The furnishings were all very comfortable and we loved the log burner. We had no coal when we arrived but a quick msg to the owner and that was quickly rectified. The hot water and heating needed a quick read-up but we soon got the hang of it. The owner had left a bottle of wine for us - how thoughtful. We were told that the water came from the farm supply and it did seem to have a metallic smell to it. The owner had left some bottled water for us but my husband used the tap water and said it tasted fine. The area is amazing. There are so many things to go and do, we were spoiled for choice. We were lucky that the nights weren’t cloudy whilst we were there and so the night sky was stunning. A lovely area and a very comfortable cottage.

Whilst the cottage outwardly looked wonderful and the hosts left us provisions we were not expecting there were some things we were not comfortable with .

The first was that there was no lock on the porch in which coats, shoes and other out door equipment was left .The main door into the house was difficult to open and there was some evidence of forced entry/entries being made. We did ask the hosts about the lock on the porch which they said had never had a key but it was a solid double glazed door with a multi point lock similar to our home front door and this certainly has a workable lock. The new electric fire could not be controlled remotely as the batteries had failed and although we told the hosts on our first day there, they did not provide any new batteries but did say we could use the manual override. There were other small things which needed attention and we left a list of these so they could be rectified.
