Last Minute Cottages in Hexham

Hexham is a historic market town in Northumberland. Well known for Hexham Abbey, The Old Gaol, and mostly known for its connections with the Romans and Chesters Roman fort. Hexham is a delight for the whole family and is a wonderful bolthole for exploring Northumberland National Park and Hadrian's Wall.

Reasons to Visit Hexham

Hexham Town

Hexham is rife with history and stunning architecture, ranging from Hexham Abbey and the Old Gaol to Queen's Hall Arts and the Forum Cinema. Hexham also has a host of independent shops, from vintage clothes to violin dealers, jewellers, art galleries and an old-fashioned sweet shop that's perfect for the kids. The town also holds the Hexham Book Festival every year. With various celebrity and local authors giving talks and even writing workshops, there is something for the whole family at this impressive book festival. Hexham is a bustling town with a lot going on, so discover the perfect cottage for you and your family or friends for a last-minute holiday you'll remember forever. With our best price guarantee, you can be sure you are getting the best deal on your professionally managed cottage.

Hadrian's Wall

Hexham is a great place to stay if you are looking to explore Northumberland National Park, and excellent if you are interested in Roman history. Roman sites such as Vindolanda, Housesteads, Chesters Roman Fort, several turrets, and Hadrian's Wall are only a short drive away. Most of Hadrian's Wall passes through Northumberland National Park, with Roman towns such as Corbridge only a walk away from Hexham. There are also a number of fantastic museums about life on Hadrian's Wall. The Roman Army Museum is half an hour away and well worth the drive. If you and your family or friends are looking for a last-minute historical adventure, then Hexham is the perfect place to begin. Become a Last Minute Cottages member and receive exclusive member discounts when renting a cottage.

Where to Stay in Hexham

The centre of Hexham is near the Abbey, where most of the restaurants, pubs and bars are located. Some of the main attractions are also in this area, such as the Old Gaol, The Sele park and many independent shops. The centre is the place to be if you want to enjoy the town's buzz. If you are looking for a quieter stay and perhaps more interested in exploring Northumberland National Park, the town's outskirts would better suit you and your family or friends.

Places to Visit Near Hexham

Corbridge is a walk from Hexham and has the remains of a Roman town.

Newcastle Upon Tyne is a large city with many attractions, and a great day out from Hexham.

Whitley Bay is a coastal town just north of Newcastle. It is famous for it's beach and Spanish City development.

Berwick Upon Tweed is the northernmost town in England; it's only two and a half miles south of the border.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Albert - Verified booking

We booked this cottage for 2 reasons, 1) dark skies so we could see stars without light pollution, we got clear cold nights but also a full moon, so we could only see the stars that we would see back at home.

    2) to have time away due to bonfire night, as our dog got very stressed last year at home, we got our wish and very chilled and relaxed dog. About the cottage.....WOW you get a lot of cottage for your money, particularly in off season, loads of internal space, photos don't do it justice and deceptive from front, if you are taking dog(s) there are safe areas for them front and back, back is preferred as you can see through several windows. Cast log stove makes lounge nice and cosy, watching flames dance with no lights on and a lovely moon rise in the old arch window, was a joy for me....but lost on the hound. Kitchen, plenty of space and enough utensils and cookware (take a water filter if you have one) water is from a bore hole, but tea is nicer having had water filtered. Bathroom, big, nice deep bath and separate shower.....but its the only one, if you have family of four, you may struggle at times. The area, well you got a forest on your doorstep, 2 rivers (1 front, 1 back) Kielder water not far away, Hadrian's wall (I recommend locating a place called the SILL) its a new education centre, great for kids. Hexham is nearest major town, lovely buildings, and shops a good park with skate park, nearest village is Bellingham, which has food shops, tea rooms, heritage centre with a railway carriage, a waterfall walk.....its a cracking area for those muddy walks and wide open spaces, my only gripe is dog and animals, the place is full of either sheep or cattle.....so no suitable places to let dog off lead, same with cottage area, only safe space to play is your rear enclosed garden, everywhere else has to be on lead. But apart from that I cannot recommend this cottage enough, for a autumn/winter hide away it's perfect.

When we arrived at the cottage we were immediately impressed by the cleanliness and quality of the place.

The beds and linen were some of the best we have experienced and we were really impressed! The kitchen was well enough equipped for us, plenty of crockery and glassware to meet our needs and enough pans and dishes to cook easily. The fridge was a little small given the distance from a large supermarket, but was fine for the four of us. We can recommend sausages from Rothbury if you visit Cragside, absolutely amazing! The location was just what we wanted, seclusion, perfect dark skies and picturesque. We were able to walk from the front door and the cows and sheep were lovely to watch from the kitchen window! Simon was warm and friendly without being intrusive in the slightest. We were left a welcome pack and that was really generous. Overall a delightful and friendly host! The location for us was perfect, we toured all of Northumberland and popped into Scotland :) We saw the Milky Way and then warmed ourselves by the log burner, absolutely perfect! We are hoping to book to come back next summer, the area and the cottage has really stolen our hearts!

    We had a lovely stay.

It was very quiet and we were not disturbed. It was a lovely touch to have biscuits, milk, tea and coffee available on arrival. The property was well appointed and had everything we needed for our weeks stay- we only went out to walk the dog (as we have visited that area of Northumberland numerous times before) plus the weather was typical for February. If going in colder times of the year I would advise to take a couple days supply of wood and kindling- (starter pack is provided) more can be picked up in Bellingham. Due to spending most of the days in the cottage relaxing and reading, the owner altered the heating times for us. We found the sofas very comfortable, facilitating a relaxed and comfortable stay. The views were lovely. The garden was a nice relaxing place to sit or just walk around- nice to see that it was left to take its natural course in winter. We left recharged and refreshed- highly recommend.

The decor, furnishings and utilities at the cottage are of a high standard.

Coupled with the beautifully situated, quiet, remote location, this made for an excellent stay. No traffic noise, just delightful birdsong. The friendly and knowledgeable owner was on hand nearby (if needed) and gave us exceedingly useful information about the surrounding area and local wildlife. Instructions in the cottage were comprehensive and clear. Local amenities for groceries and petrol were just a short drive away as were many good pubs selling quality real ales with decent food. Plenty of delightful tourist destinations just a short drive away for great days out (e.g. Kielder, Wallington Hall, Chesters Fort, Housesteads, Sycamore Gap, Belsay Hall). Fabulous! I would imagine Gallow Law Cottage receives many repeat bookings!

This was our first holiday in a holiday cottage and Gallow Law has certainly set the bar high.

Such a lovely cottage with plenty of room for the whole family. Very cosy and has everything you could need. It was lovely to arrive to a welcome package of scones, butter, bread, milk, wine and dog biscuits. The owner, Simon also brought round some freshly laid eggs which is just what we needed for our morning fry up. It’s such a peaceful location with lovely walks from the doorstep and not far from Kielder which is worth a visit. It was very helpful to have walking routes on the bookcase and plenty of information on places to visit. Thank you for a lovely stay, we were sad to be leaving but will definitely be back!
