What our customers say about their holidays

I really liked the unspoilt feel of the building, sufficiently converted for comfort without losing its character.
The wooden bolt which closes the bottom half of the door is EXTREMELY stiff. I was never sure I'd be able to open / close it. I had to keep the bottom half bolted shut to prevent the neighbours' large dog bursting in. I kept the top half open to let in more light and to air the place whenever I was in. I had to buy an elastic cord to hold the top half open (I did look round for string) as it just swung shut each time. The hard floor and leather sofa/chair is a great option for keeping the place clean as dogs are allowed but the soft furnishings have absorbed the smell of dog, especially the cushions, which a person plumps up around their back and shoulders in use and so they are in close human contact - could these be changed weekly and laundered? All you would need is two sets. I found the bed and bed linen supremely comfortable! With the hair dryer plugged in there is no mirror within reach - upstairs or downstairs. Thank you for the wine, chocolates, milk, tea and coffee, they were very welcoming. I found the oven easy to use (I have gas at home) but having to use pan lids that were too large meant the condensation from boiling etc constantly spilled over onto the the stove top. The kitchen tap splashes/drips onto the painted shelf because it is too far back from the sink. When it rained a lot of water came in through the wall and puddled on the stone window ledge behind the sink (where all the soil is) - this then seeped away somewhere over the next couple of hours! I knew to expect dogs in the shared courtyard and I am not scared of dogs. I also know you ask people to use the shared spaces respectfully. However this message might need reinforcing. My thigh was hurt and bruised by the neighbours' large boisterous dog which constantly jumped up at me when I was going in and out and they were outside with the dogs. They tried holding it by its back legs but this was not effective. I really enjoyed my stay. I make these comments not as a criticism but as helpful feedback.

We had a lovely short holiday in the cottage.
It is within walking distance (10 min walk) from two large supermarkets and the town centre and the town is very well placed to explore the North York Moors. The cottage is clean, well furnished, with all kitchen utensils you may want to use, including a cafetiere and two fans. It is a small cottage and I understand why the owners won't put 4 chairs in the kitchen as they would get in the way. With the lovely hot weather, we had breakfast and dinner 'al fresco' in the back garden. It is a patio with a rockery, but is surrounded with an ivy hedge and there is a feeling of peace. I really enjoyed sitting there and watching the swifts go past and the sparrows chirp. The kids really loved the cottage. We had a circular walk from Goathland to Beck Hole and a detour to Thomason Foss. We didn't get the steam train, but waited at the station to see it arrive and depart from Goathland. We visited the lovely Beck Isle museum, full of interesting things. Pickering town is well worth a visit, with the beck and shops. We also spent a day at Thornton-le-Dale. The last day we relocated to Filey as it was too hot!

Overall, the cottage was lovely and dog friendly.
However, as mentioned by previous guests, the mattress needs to be upgraded as it was uncomfortable. There are some lovely period features at Cherry Tree cottage, beams in the kitchen, lovely banister railings and antiques items placed around the cottage, not to mention the lovely stable door is beautiful. Whilst we were there, we reported a strong smell of sewerage in the kitchen area and Matt called over to remedy this for us. However, it persisted and whilst not present all the time, made for an unpleasant experience at times. The cottage is well proportioned and the kitchen is spacious with lots of surface space too. The flag stone floors are a lovely focal point and the cottage was warm enough for us not to light the fire in March. Cherry tree cottage is a good base to explore North Yorkshire with the moors just a 15 minute drive away and Whitby and Scarborough within an hours drive. We did enjoy our stay here but more could be done in terms of comfort and making it a more pleasant place to stay.

Booked this cottage for a quiet break to do some walking around North Yorkshire Moors.
The cottage was fine although we had some interesting moments with working the shower (figuring out where water was coming from, water going cold, we like simple!). Also we had neighbours who were friendly enough but so were their dogs. My partner is a bit nervous around dogs and struggled with having to dodge the dogs jumping up at us every time we encountered them and trying to get into our cottage. The weather was beautiful but we were not comfortable sitting in the garden because there was no peace from the dogs. Pickering is a very dog friendly area so anyone not keen, or has any issues with dogs should take this into account. Otherwise a great area to explore. Pickering is a lovely little town, lots of tearooms and pubs for food, all really nice.
