What our customers say about their holidays
Lindsay - Verified booking
Our very peaceful week spent at at Fern Cottage has delivered on every level from the very outset.
The cottage is very clean, spacious, well furnished and equipped to a good standard (plentiful stock of crockery, sharp knives, good variety of pans etc.). The bedrooms (one is en suite) offered very comfortable beds, plentiful storage hanging rails & drawer storage and the USB facility in the bedside lights were a very welcome novelty ! The large, well equipped Kitchen allowed made it easy to prepare food in (noting that the microwave was integral to the built in oven) and the private back patio offering a sunny morning âfirst cup of the dayâ sanctuary was pure indulgent therapy. The easily accessed (double space) private parking provision within the property was a much appreciated added luxury and replenishing the bird table with the fat balls and seed treats provided by the owners gave us all hours of joy. We felt very lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy the same home from home comforts that Richard and Sue would afford themselves when they stay at the Cottage. Each Sykes Cottage offers an individual delightful charm, Fern Cottage is no exception to this. We have enjoyed memorable opportunities to walk along and explore the beautiful local beaches, Staithes Harbour, Runswick Bay, Skinningrove (South), Robin Hoods Bay,Sandsend Beach (& Sandside Cafe). The Cod and Lobster Pub in Staithes Harbour offered vey large portion servings on nights we ate out. To mark my Dads 83rd birthday, he asked to re-visit the lovely Whitby centre and we sat people watching from the pier recalling many happy childhood visits to itâs Harbour and pier on our visit. We would of gone out to sea on a boat trip to Scarborough but the tides offered awkward sailing times. Later in the week we drove northwards, on the one rainy day we had, to visit the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Hartlepool and witnessed the difference in coastal scenery from Noses Point through past Hartlepool (and the Hartlepool Monkey statue), through to Redcar, Saltburn-By-The-Sea, Marske by the Sea and Skinningrove Beaches. Inland we have been charmed by the contrasts seen in vast open upland moorland, undulating upland livestock farmland, coastal cliff top horizons through to the gentle village and streamside scenery of Great Ayton and the Waterfall Gardens, Thornton le Dale (and Mathewsons Classic Car Auction), Snainton and Pickering to name but a few. The Rapton Viewpoint (YO13 9EB / (54.2896588, -0.5643036)) offered breathtaking opportunities to marvel at local birds of prey in action. I would highly recommend spending a couple of hours in Malton and locating the Groovy Moo Ice Cream parlour for a treat. Needless to say, we now have to go home but leave knowing we really want to stay to see more of what this beautiful area has to offerâ¦.enjoy !

The lodge was beautiful, spacious and bright.
The layout worked well for our family and our daughter especially loved the bunks. Set in a peaceful setting, we enjoyed the quiet that it offered. However, the rattan furniture is not as per the picture, itâs a basic set which only seats 4 despite the lodge being able to sleep 7. A identical table and chairs were being used in the lodge opposite, Iâm not sure if this was a coincidence. The bbq, despite being a Weber, was unusable due to the fact there was no handle on top of the bbq lid and inside was absolutely filthy and rusted in places due to the holes that the handle left. The oven wasnât very good and we struggled to even cook oven chips properly. It only seemed to cook well on the right hand side of the cooker. The skirting boards were falling off in places, particularly next to the fridge where they were just resting against the wall. The main issue we had though was the blinds in the main bedroom. As per a previous review, they were completely broken which meant you couldnât open the blinds nor close them properly. Unfortunately, the blinds flooded the room with light from 4am which woke our 1 year old. We had lovely weather during our stay but had to buy a fan as we couldnât access the window in the bedroom and the room was really hot. The mattress in the bedroom was spring based and we found this really uncomfortable. The remaining blinds across the lodge were also a little broken too. Unfortunately we found there to be a lack of cutlery too. Some basics like salt and pepper would have been a good addition along with some hand soap. This along with the lack of childrenâs cutlery, for the price that we paid made us feel underwhelmed. Especially when weâve been to other properties, paid less and got more for our money.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable few days at Rockpool Retreat.
The site is easy to find and first impressions are excellent. Being low season we were only one of two occupied lodges so it was wonderfully quiet. The lodge itself is well equipped and comfortable and there was a nice welcome basket provided on arrival with the basics. Our first impression was actually, this actually looks better than the pictures! Our only criticism is that the master en-suite bedroom has a full height window and ridiculously thin curtains, they may as well have not been there for how useful they are. A black out blind or a thick thermal curtain would make a huge difference. The local area is nice, it's a tiny village though and given it's location it's very seasonal. When we went the local pubs/restaurants/take aways and even those in the next village were closed outside Friday/Weekend so keep that in mind if your intention is to go out. Runswick Bay itself is a very pretty little area, there is a road down to the beach but unless you're comfortable with walking up VERY steep hills, take the car down there. We stayed with our dog and the site is really well located for going on nice walks. If you go outside the gates and turn right you are very quickly into open fields and you have access to the Cleveland Way foo path that can take you for miles in either direction, aside from a few walkers we didn't see another soul. There is an Aldi/Lidl/Asda all within a 15 minute or so drive and slightly closer there's a BP garage near scaling dam with a really well stocked shop attached. We'll definitely be returning, would be nice to be able to make use of the provided BBQ next time!

A good location with lots of places close by to have days out.
Hinderwell has 2 pubs, a chipshop and local butchers for sampling good food and beer. The house is comfortable and had a travel cot, change mat, stair gate and IKEA highchair - great for our baby. A good selection of games and books The house is well heated and radiators are easy to turn up and down. The downstairs living space is large with plenty of sitting space Points to improve, in our opinion The log burner needs the chimney sweeping. The fire would only draw with the door ajar and went out very quickly when the door was shut. A point raised by a few previous guests. The double bedroom (non ensuite) door is difficult to close. Only a frustration for us when putting our baby to bed! We did have a blocked toilet which took too long to fix. The toilet was draining slowly whrbWe found our own plumber as Sykes, and the owner, struggled to find one quickly enough. With a baby, me being pregnant and mobility issues, this made not having a downstairs bathroom an issue for us. The owner did send tools however which my husband tried without success. This meant a day lost and I had to clean the bathroom thoroughly. The other members of our party had to move rooms to allow us all to use the ensuite during this time. We did receive compensation though which was appreciated.

Outstanding lodge everything about it is fantastic.
Location is perfect for walks down to Runswick Bay. The welcome hamper was fantastic and all the extra touches around the lodge for us to use so we can begin our holiday straight away. The only thing we could have used was an extra key as our family at times wanted to go separate places but couldnât if the other went out earlier and had the key. The parking permit is a lovely thing but wasnât sure where or how to use this, it would be very useful if instructions were added to the information folder and much appreciated for those who donât understand how they work. The lodge was so clean and comfortable and beautifully decorated throughout. Please donât take the two things above as a negative it would just have been even better for our stay. Anyone considering this beautiful lodge wonât be disappointed. Didnât want to come home it was that relaxing. Lots of thoughtful touches from the owners throughout the lodge. Just love it all.
