What our customers say about their holidays
Gabriel - Verified booking
We have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending The Bothy.
It is a magnificent little cottage, and a credit to the owners (Carol and Mike). We were incredibly impressed by the high standard of refurbishment and housekeeping throughout. The moment you walk in, you can tell that Carol and Mike take great pride in ensuring guests are well looked after. If this was a hotel room, it would be up there with the best that we've stayed in. Carol and Mike are also attentive hosts. On the day we were driving up, a massive storm followed us all the way from London. Carol messaged us during the day to make sure we were ok. At one point during our stay, the shower stopped working. Even though Carol and Mike were on holiday themselves, Carol was very responsive to our messages. She told us what to do, and then checked in to make sure it was working again. Another review suggests that there should be an anti-slip mat in the shower. We can confirm that there is one, which shows that Carol and Mike take feedback seriously. The Bothy has a TV with access to all the regular channels. You can also connect your laptop to it using an HDMI lead should you wish to curl up in bed and watch a film of your own. (The lead isn't supplied, and we're not suggesting it should be. We brought our own.) Carol and Mike have also compiled a folder with user manuals for the various appliances in The Bothy so you're not left trying to work things out for yourself. At the back of the manual, there are travel guides. Little things like this say great things about hosts. Arncliffe is a beautiful village, a universe away from our life in London. The landscape is perfect for hikes and mindfulness walks. On our first day, we explored the local area across the river by St Oswald's Church. We spent our second day hiking in Malham (Janet's Foss, Gordale Scar, Malham Tarn and Malham Cove). Other days, we visited Skipton's market and castle, Aysgarth Falls, Ribblehead Viaduct, the Wensleydale Creamery, and White Scar Cave. Also, we did a day trip to the Lake District to hike over Catbells by Derwentwater. I suggest driving via Buttertubs Pass and Keld - some of the most beautiful landscapes you will ever see! No wonder they say Yorkshire is God's own country! Finally, this is just our advice to visitors. Stay away from the Falcon Inn. It's a miserable place run by an oafish family lacking in basic customer service skills. Its opening hours aren't even regular, and it looks like its been in need of a damn good clean for several years now. We visited a couple of times, and its patrons are international travellers. It really says something about a pub when locals are hardly to be seen. There are plenty of delightful pubs in neighbouring villages for lunches, dinners and wider choice of drinks. This was our first time using Sykes Cottage, and we will definitely be using this site again. Thank you, Carol and Mike, for making our trip something to remember.

This was possibly one of our best holidays ever.
My partner and I have fallen in love with the Yorkshire Dales. The 17th century cottage is right in the heart of the countryside, Bank Newton being a tiny hamlet? and the nearest village being Gargrave. It was so peaceful and relaxing. The cottage itself is beautiful and in keeping with a property of that period. I loved the little garden with the arch and the roses, leading straight onto a field of cows. It was lovely to wake up in the morning, open the windows and hear cows and sheep. The bedroom and the living room were so cosy - impossible not to relax here. The kitchen and the bathroom had everything conceivable that one could need. There is a very good farm shop called Keelan that sold fresh, local produce nearby. We did a lot of walking on this holiday, there was always a sense of space, we rarely bumped into anyone. This part of Yorkshire remains unspoiled. I would thoroughly recommend staying at this cottage. The owner was so thoughtful and concerned that we should enjoy our stay. We are already thinking about whether it would be possible to book the same holiday again this time next year.

We booked last minute and were fortunate to secure 5 nights in October.
The Cottage was wonderful, warm and extremely well equipped. I would imagine that the cottage would be the perfect spot to locate any time of the year. It is a couple of miles from Gargrave in a hamlet called Bank Newton. Catherine lived close and was a great source of knowledge for local walks as well as walks further afield. The cottage is a stone's throw from the Liverpool-Leeds Canal which has pretty walks in both directions. Airedale, Wharfedale, Bolton Abbey, Grassington, Kettlewell, Malham, Settle, Kettlewell, and numerous other Dales Beauty spots (to say nothing of Tearooms) are nearby. The George at Hubberholme is to be recommended, terrific food, local beer and a genial Mine Host. Buckden, stop off at the George for lunch, Scar House, Cray and back down to Buckden is a lovely walk. Back to the Cottage for tea and some of Catherine's super cake...............what's not to like! Woodman Cottage is a beautiful well equipped cottage with lots of lovely touches and added extras which made for a very pleasant stay.
Parking outside the cottage was not always possible which involved parking in the nearby road or nearby car park, however we were aware that this would be be on a first come first served basis. There were only a few minor points regarding the cottage itself, such as no socket near the dressing table in the bedroom which meant having to dry my hair downstairs at the dining table, and also the shower basket provided for holding shampoo, etc was attached too high on the wall to be easily accessed. Plus points were the coat hooks for hanging coats on - something sadly lacking in most other cottages we have stayed in - which were a godsend considering we were staying during the tail end of storm Dennis! On the whole we found it very comfortable and very conveniently situated in the town and would definitely recommend to others.

The cottage made all the difference.
It was like being at home - that was the impression we got when we first opened the door. Everything that we could have needed was provided and it all worked! There was even a Nespresso machine and for us that's a big plus. The cottage was quirky in the nicest possible way; there were so many personal touches that it felt almost as though we knew the owner(s) - pity we didn't quite meet them. It was so handy for the town centre - just a short walk, and the parking area next to the cottage worked well (in that we always managed to get parked there). If we need a cottage in Skipton again this is where we'll want to be. I can't praise this cottage highly enough - so much better than we could have imagined. Oh, and another thing - the bathroom (bath and shower) was a dream; then again, it all was.
