What our customers say about their holidays

What can I say, just "wow"!
This place is incredible, such an eye for detail has gone in to, fantastic furnishings, bathroom and kitchen. The property is in the garden of the owners, but we didn't actually meet them once so felt very private. The hedge between the cottage and their garden has grown high enough now to provide privacy from their garden, but still lets plenty sun onto the patio. The garden is completely fenced/gated so doors can be opened up and the dog could roam free, there is a small lawn area for doggy toileting and washing line. Lots of interesting tropical plants and a full herb bed for seasoning dinner and the BBQ! The cottage is very well insulated so it can get quite warm when the sun gets on it, we tried to shut curtains when we went out to keep it at bay, but you can open massive wide doors and windows when you can back to cool it down quickly. I would recommend a top sheet is provided for the bed as the duvet was very thick and so too hot, we always travel with our own, but would be a nice touch. The water pressure is also quite slow in the shower. In terms of location, it is perfect, set in farmland away from town it's so quiet and peaceful, but only a 5-10 min drive to Porthleven and and Highburrow cliff path. Also ideal location for Lands End and Lizard penninsula. We managed to find plentry of 'secret' beaches no one else was on, even in amazing warm weather, and lots of vegan food (including numerous places selling vegan ice cream for our lactose intolerant doggy, she was beyond happy!) 10 min drive to supermarket in Helston if needed.

Immaculately maintained, tiny characterful property.
The Old Stable had everything we needed for a comfortable week away, although I would not think a longer stay would be practicable owing to the basic cooking facilities (a portable two ring electric hob and microwave) and just a tumble drier meaning handwashing lighter items of clothing, finding a laundrette or bringing lots of stuff. We appreciated the good quality tea, coffee bags and biscuits which are the hallmark of a thoughtful and welcoming host. Towels and tea towels are provided but bring your own beach towels. The bed on its little gallery is comfortable but we found moving the rolling steps to and fro in order to cook then wash up a bit of a faff, be aware they are quite heavy with steel handrails and glass panels. We knew about this arrangement, and it wouldn't put us off staying here again. No outside space of course, which we also knew about, but the quiet beach is adjacent and is one of our favourites on the Lizard. The Five Pilchards pub, which in the past has done good pub food, has closed down and is for sale but we had a great meal at the beach café next door. I know people rave about the Fat Apples café just up the lane but every time we went past we had just missed it being open. It shuts promptly at 5 pm. Our dog enjoyed staying here and we were glad she couldn't get up the steep steps and attempt to climb onto the bed to find us, which she sometimes does in an unfamiliar house. She had to stay in her own dog bed. She knew where we were and could see us so she was content. This was a definite plus for us.

While the property was welcoming enough and kept in a good state to which we kept it, it was smaller than it appeared through the images advertised.
The parking situation was a little tricky and we sadly damaged the underside of our car. It is advertised as dog friendly which it is however it is not secure at all so be careful letting your dogs outside, also the owners have several dogs themselves who wander down which is fair enough however we sadly have nervous and reactive dogs so caused us a few small issues but otherwise it is set in a nice location for dog walking. Sadly it wasnât for us really and a further reason for the low rating was being charged £100 housekeeping bond when the property was left as we found it, the money was taken by Sykes without consulting us at all, we sadly had no chance to ask what the issue was and upon contacting them to ask for the images and evidence so we could try to see if there was anything that was indeed wrong that we had missed, I heard nothing back despite contacting them twice. As we cleaned the property before we left and returned everything to its proper place I was understandably upset to have been charged extra money without any explanation from the owners or from Sykes. For us it wonât be something we book again sadly, however I would say that if it is for a few days and you arenât going to be in the property much then itâs not a bad place to stay. But it is not suitable for any larger dogs in my opinion there really isnât enough space.

We had a fantastic week, the weather was absolutely glorious but regardless of that the property is ideal and extremely comfortable with plenty of room.
It is tastefully decorated and it's obvious the owners care. The garden around the property is small but adequate for us, plus we have two dogs and it worked well, fields easily accessible directly from the property. It is quiet and you are not overlooked in any way. I'm sure there is more positives to add but can't think immediately of all the things I loved about it. It was one of the best places we have stayed. The location whether driving or walking is ideal, its a 20-30 min walk into Porthleven, 15-20 min walk to Penrose estate (beautiful National Trust with great dog walks and access to Loe Pool and Loe Bar), 5 min drive into Porthleven (don't be surprised if you can't park in the town) but be prepared to park on the outskirts and walk in. Coastal paths accessible from there also. The town has everything you need and restaurants (good idea to book, they are excellent and popular) and shops allow dogs, which is a big deal, trust me. This is not criticism (because believe me we will visit again, fingers crossed they let us

A huge thank you to Amanda and David, we loved staying at Spires.
It is such a beautiful property and we enjoyed every moment. We particularly enjoyed each evening looking at the view and watching the sky darken and the stars appear. It's the most relaxed we've been in months. The sparkly shower room is a delight and the kitchen facilities are great. The bed is so comfortable. Luckily I had taken clothes hangers with us as there is no wardrobe. The chest of drawers were fine and there were hooks to hang clothes on. The location is great with vistas overlooking fabulous Cornish countryside. With Truro just up the road and the north and south coats just a short drive away. Amanda made us feel very welcome and we feel sure to return again sometime.
