What our customers say about their holidays

Crooked Cottage was quirky, as advertised, and that was part of its charm.
It was very well prepared for our arrival, and we appreciated the fresh-cut flowers and the food and drink offerings that welcomed us. It was ideal for two, with a small back yard and table and chairs, surrounded by a bank of container flowers and some stone walling. A great retreat, and an opportunity to meet the neighbours, if you wish. Our one reservation about the cottage was the two flights of narrow stairs - plenty to hold on to, but possibly a challenge for the elderly, infirm or disabled. The Cottage was ideally located in a quiet part of the village, but only two or three minutes' walk from shops and the King's Head Hotel, a friendly venue which serves excellent meals. Everyday needs are well served by the local shops, and the local pharmacy even sells "medicinal" wine! Kirkbymoorside is a delightful, characterful, historic small town with a Wednesday market. It attracts visitors, but is not inundated with them! It's also an ideal base for touring the North Yorkshire Moors and Whitby, where we commuted to the Folk festival a couple of times, and were able to park centrally - in peak season! - by arriving early and breakfasting there. It's a 45 minute drive, but passes quickly and pleasantly enough with so much moorland scenery to enjoy en route.

Cartwheel Cottage was comfortable, clean, peaceful, and had easy parking.
The owners were very helpful and friendly, and their four-legged family an added bonus! I queried whether there was a microwave or not, before arrival, as different websites had different information on this. There wasn't, but they put one in for my stay. For people with limited mobility but not wheelchair users, there is one small step up into the cottage, which I found perfectly manageable with M.E/CFS. There is a short walk from the car parking area to the cottage, but on one level and a hard surface. Wifi was non-existent within the property during my stay - the owners in their advertising are transparent about wifi issues - but I believe there would have been reception from in front of the house had I tried that. However the EE network and data was perfectly sufficient, and I managed to tether my iPad to my phone for those times when I wanted to check local online maps, opening times of places, etc. Nothing else matters while on holiday. I would happily return.

Lovely cottage, comfortable (especially the bed).
We hardly used the lounge, not because it was not comfortable but two flights of stairs if you want to top your glass was a bit of a pain, however the upside was that we watched little television and spent time reading and doing a jigsaw which is what a holiday is for! The sitting out area was smaller than I expected and even though it was pleasant it does not get the sun. There is are lovely walks behind the cottage into Manor Vale Woods for long or short walks, handy for an evening stroll for the dog. The village had excellent amenities, a butchers, greengrocers, bakery, Indian, Chinese and chip shop as well as a Spar and Co-op and there is a larger Co-op and Lidl in Pickering (7 miles) for a bigger more varied shop. Lots to do in the area which makes the cottage ideal as a base. Jane (the owner) left us milk, cake and eggs, changed the linen after the first week and left us another 6 eggs.

The location was spot on.
Beautiful and peaceful. The cottage was just perfect, clean, organized with a well thought out design . Attention to the finer things in life, such as quality silverware and a wonderful small dining table with fantastic chairs, pure class. The bed was unbelievably comfortable with luxurious bedding, it provided a fine nights sleep. The shower was first class, with the lovely added touches of shower gels, and toiletries. The wine and home made cake was amazing! But the most impressive part was the friendly welcome from Marion, John and Jules. They have gone above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. We have made a special connection with Murphy, the dog he's 17 years old, cute as a button with bags of character. We will definitely be coming back. Thankyou so much!

This was a last minute booking and I'm so glad we decided on Crooked Cottage.
It is such a charming cottage and it's obvious a lot of thought has gone into the furnishings etc. We loved the quirky features. The stairs and layout took some getting used to but that was part of the fun. The little garden was lovely. Some guests seem to have had problems with the next door neighbour but the house has a sold sign on it so think they may have moved. Just one criticism, I couldn't work out how to use the cooker, even with the instructions, and wasn't prepared to spend any more time of my holiday trying to figure it out. A simple oven with "old fashioned knobs" would have been better. Would definitely recommend it although people with mobility issues may find the stairs a bit troublesome.
