What our customers say about their holidays
Anouska - Verified booking
We have stayed in a lot of cottages over the years.
Iâd like to start with positive. The cottage is very well positioned for exploring beautiful Boscastle and the bedrooms were lovely with extremely comfortable beds. We were a little disappointed by the level of maintenance, cleanliness and lack of attention to detail at Pencliffe in general. There were a lot of cobwebs and dust downstairs. The lamp shade over the stairs has come apart. There were no oven gloves, the tea towels were damp and stained. The kitchen in general was not very clean - the cooker top was greasy and the sink very stained and there were crumbs on the counters, the kick board by the cooker doesnât stay on because the clip is broken and the pedal on the bin doesnât work. The sink in the bathroom continuously leaked and we had to keep kitchen paper under the pipe. I suspect that the cottage is struggling with damp downstairs largely due to the lack of light and close proximity to the cliffs. I appreciate that this is a difficult problem to solve. We were very cold on our first night in the cottage but there was no wood for the fire. This is a shame as the cottage was advertised as logs being provided. We just felt like the property would benefit from a really good clean downstairs and a little more attention to detail and maybe a review of how it is listed because it wasnât quite what we expected. We are really not complainers at all and intend this review to be informative rather than viewed as negative.

First View Thank you for providing the lovely gifts of Cider & biscuits.
I loved your cottage, the views were amazing of the sea and countryside. The decor and furniture was lovely. The shower was lovely too. It really did help us as a family to use your washing machine and dishwasher. The garden was beautiful. The only negative comments l would like to say is that we had to roll the rug up in the living room because it was covered in pet hairs and my grandson was covered in hair. I swept the floor where the rug was and filled the dustpan with hair and dust. The grill wasn't clean when we arrived but your cottage is beautiful and so is Boscastle. I would love to stay at your cottage again. Second View Boscastle feedback a beautiful location ideal base for exploring cornwall luvly clean house with a superb view. Third View Thank you for welcoming us to Honeycroft cottage with a lovely bottle of cider and biscuits. We loved every part of your cottage, views of the sea, countryside and all the little shops down in the valley. The only negative I would like to mention is that we had to roll up the rug in the living room as it was covered in pet hair and my son kept getting covered in it, the upstairs toilet seat is loose and the oven grill tray wasn't clean. Lastly I would like to say that your cottage is a beautiful place to stay and us as a family enjoyed it very much. Boscastle is beautiful. We would definitely recommend and would love to stay at your cottage again in the future.

The property is very lovely.
The view is to die for, and the house is nice in the most part. The garden is lovely, and the dogs were perfectly safe there and didn't escape. However, I don't think that the owner has actually slept in the double beds. If he had, he would have changed them. They are double beds, with double duvets (an absolute no in my view!), the mattresses were so hard and the bed made such a racket every time you turned over. In the end, we moved the spare single beds (which were super comfy) and camped out in the lounge! Also, be aware there are no wardrobes whatsoever throughout the property. It's not so much of an issue if there are only 2 of you, as we used the other rooms to hang anything we needed to. There are lots of drawers though. Finally, the kitchen is well stocked, but again, there is nowhere for you to store your food for the week, as every cupboard is stuffed full of glasses, plates, cleaning supplies, etc. We created a "pantry" by the fridge and just stored everything there. There is a great shop at the bottom of the hill, which has everything you need and more and they're super friendly too. Would be rebook? Only if we knew that there were new beds, mattresses and bedding. It was lovely, but we won't be back.

The property was not clean.
Hairs and toothpaste found in the bathroom sink, dirty marks on the toilet seat, sticky marks and food crumbs on kitchen worktops, dusty, dirty surfaces and floors. Photographs provided to Sykes. The television did not work and it was clear from conversations with the owner that she was aware of this and therefore property listings are knowingly inaccurate. In my opinion, parking in a 'nearby street' is misleading. Guest are not made to feel welcome. There is no welcome pack and not basics left in the kitchen. Not even a teabag. No hand soap, or any soap to wash ones hands after visiting the toilet, on arrival at the property. Unfortunately, finding a dirty and unhygienic property outweighs any positives that this property may have. Furthermore, the attitude of the owner was poor as was the attitude of Sykes. The owner is in breech of contract, as stated in Sykes booking conditions, yet Sykes will not do anything about this. Furthermore, Sykes ratings clearly cannot be relied on and are not only unhelpful, but misleading when trying to choose a property. Therefore, I could not recommend Sykes to anyone.

We had a great weeks holidays even with the storms raining sideways!
It was great for the kids to have their own rooms and space to get away from each other. Beds were comfortable, rooms well decorated with beautiful views out to sea. Good lighting, I do like a lamps and rarely use the main ceiling lights. Only downside is there is no hanging space. Kitchen is well equipped and there is everything you would possibly need to cook or bake a cake even. We played cards after dinner in the conservatory every night, great to listen to the rain! Lounge is cosy and comfortable with duel aspect windows and amazing views, no matter what the weather. The large TV is smart so you can log into Netflix/Disney+ etc. Wifi does drop off every now and then but only in heavy storms, so no different to the centre of Kent! You could get three cars on the drive if needed. All in all a great property for a family holiday. Boscastle is a great place to explore northern Cornwall. A few nice pubs and very quaint. Walk down to the harbour and stop in the pubs on the way back, for fuel, itâs steep coming back! Tintagel and Port Isaac are worth a visit too.
