  We had a lovely stay in 56 The Green.

  The cottage is very comfortable and clean. The sofas in the lounge are as comfy as they look and having a real fire made it so cosy. The kitchen has everything you need and we ate at the breakfast bar rather than using the dining room. The two main bedrooms are big and the beds very comfortable and both have lovely views over the green. Having the bathroom and the downstairs shower room and toilet is a big bonus. The welcome booklet has to be one of the best I’ve seen. Lots and lots of essential information in it. Helpful info for the house and lots of suggestions of places to visit. We can highly recommend Raby Castle and High Force Falls. Richmond and Barnard Castle are great too. Being across the green from the local pub was a real bonus. I can thoroughly recommend the food there and have to say the staff and locals made us feel very welcome. I would like to thank the hosts for making their cottage available to us holidaymakers and also thank John, the caretaker, who called to let us know that the property was ready for us ahead of time. I would happily stay in the property again and would highly recommend it to others. Just a very tiny word of warning - the doors are quite low.   Had a lovely stay at this cottage.

  First things first, the bed (one person staying) was so comfy. Always a plus when away. Two fabulous king sized bedrooms to chose from with lovely views over the green. Although the twin room was cute too. It was a plus to have two bathrooms. The parking was great. Outside the front door every night. Not always easy with North Yorkshire cottages. The whole village was very quiet. Didn’t try the Bayhorse until my last night for a meal, (delicious) wished I’d popped in sooner. Definitely book as it’s popular. Found that the Stoneygate cafe also served good food. I visited Mainsgill Farm shop twice. My advice would be to go mid morning or mid afternoon as the turning right onto the busy A66 is daunting. It is a breeze coming back. Visited loads of castles and museums. Would highly recommend Bernard Castle Castle and Bowes Museum. Also Richmondshire Museum too. The cottage has Amazon Prime and Netflix so I managed to get through all episodes of Clarksons Farm (fantastic show) and Bridgerton, lol. Would recommend a stay, you will not be disappointed.   Bit of a disappointment on arrival late afternoon after a very long journey to find the house cold - thermostat set to 16 - and no starter kit of logs/ kindling.

  The log burner in the kitchen/diner appeared to be out of order with the cord door liner detached and lying loose. A warning note should have been left - rang the caretaker who confirmed it should not be used. He also said a bag of logs would be left for us the following morning for the fire in the sitting room - which they were. House took a while to warm up but after this misstep everything was great. The house is very well kitted out with super comfy beds and a really excellent sofa. All the kitchen equipment is good and the layout of the kitchen/diner makes for companionable cooking and chatting. The walks right from the doorstep are fabulous and we were lucky to be there when the newly reopened pub had just started providing food - the tea shop is also excellent. The house provided a fabulous base for exploring beautiful Swaledale and we were fortunate to experience the wonders of the Northern Lights while we were there.

  We had an excellent stay with my parents, an 18 month old little girl and my parents Labrador.

  We were visiting my parents in Lincolnshire from Australia where we live now. We stayed for 2 nights and it was exactly what we were looking for. The place is very clean, easy to move around with a dog and a toddler!. We cooked each evening in and had great meals in the lounge. The lounge is very cosy. We stayed in mid 30 degree summer heat but it would be amazing for a winter break too. The flag was cool with the windows open. We had sundowners on the green just outside the flat. Easy access to all amenities - post office across the road and 3 pubs and a great ice cream shop within 5 mins walks. Great place to locate yourself for access to the dales. V good amenities for dogs. The garden is great which is a short walk around the corner outside. Tracey was very communicative and an excellent host - even sending our little girls toy rabbit to us after leaving it there!! Would highly recommend!!

  It was great.

  The only noticeable area of improvement is that when we have stayed in other Sykes cottages there has been a bottle of milk in the fridge. Luckily it was a time and day when the village shop was open,, but some milk would be good. Other properties have even provided a bottle of wine. The sachets of coffee provided had a Use By Date that was about 8 or 9 months old. Also some shampoo:shower gel would be useful. That said everything g else was fine. It was good to have washing machine and dishwasher and everything worked. Beds and bedding were excellent. The description on the website is silent on the garden, but should probably say that there isn’t one. It is also slightly misleading about the parking, which is a very narrow headstand jutting out into the road so if you have a large or wide car you may need to park in the public parking (£15 per week).
