What our customers say about their holidays

We were in Whitby for the folk week.
The cottage was ideally situated for the events of interest to us.Some people comment of issues with the stairs but we didn't have any problems even carrying instruments. Seen much worse in Whitby. The windows look out over a busy street but noise was not an issue. The Sykes listing is wrong in two key facts - access time is not 5pm. The cottage documents show earlier than this but it is too late to know after travelling. It would be good to get a text on the arrival day to say that the cottage is ready for us, Further, leave time is a more conventional 10am, not 9 per the website. We were nearly put off booking by the incorrect times. Secondly the listing refers to permit parking nearby so one thinks of the scratch cards but the cottage has a permit to use at West Cliff car park for the duration of the stay. The property has a very well appointed: kitchen which had all required appliances except perhaps a tea strainer. Cupboards full of more glasses, mugs and plates that you ever would need in an accommodation this size. Sink drainer stand not the right size for the crockery though. Furniture is looking a bit battered but comfy enough. There are no fewer than 3 tvs but we did not use having the folk week entertainment Bedrooms are a bit tight for space and we had to move the twin beds across to be able to open the wardrobes. The beds are OK. Access to the bathroom is down 2 steep steps and in the middle of the night one really needs a hand rail to navigate safely. Slippers recommended as the steps dig into bare feet. The walk in shower is good but the operation is very stiff. Although there is a warning in the handbook you haven't read that in the shower on arrival. Better still just sort it. Nice towels but no where to dry them. The radiators are too close to the wall to hang them on. Please provide a heated towel rail.

We had a lovely stay at the lodge.
Its a great location from whitby and surrounding areas. We walked the cinder track or drove about easily. There is also a bus not too far from the house travelling from Middlesbrough to Scarborough. We ate at the windmill one night and would definitely recommend. We wish we'd gone sooner. The house is great, set back from the road. I've never seen our anxious dog so relaxed. The house was well equipped, we used the washing machine and had a maiden to dry clothes. I would say the kitchen wasn't as clean as expected. Notes say to empty cupboards and it looks like this was trusted to be done however still old food items and stains in cupboard. We rewashed the cutlery as had food stains (possibly from the dishwasher, we dont have one at home so just used the sink) and the cooker and microwave had dried food stuck to them. As a dog friendly property i appreciate it may be harder to keep on top of the hairs etc. Our dog doesn't malt and the rug in the living room had alot of dog hair left behind. We were out throughout the day staying busy and everybody's standard of cleanliness is different. I would still recommend the lodge to stay due to the great location.

This was our second time staying at the lodge.
Itâs a lovely cosy cottage in a perfect location close to the cinder track. On our arrival the cottage was icy cold and the heating wasnât working! there is a lovely log stove in the cottage however on this visit there wasnât any fuel to light it, the first time we stayed there was enough coal and logs left as a starter for your first night. So we had to go out and find a place that sold coal, this and the heating not working wasnât a great start to a holiday in December. After calling Sykes who were very kind and helpful I later got a call from the lovely owner who talked me through how to top up the water to get the boiler working. Once weâd done this it was a much nicer evening for us. We felt that the lodge had been stood empty as it was so very cold and putting the heat on caused a lot of condensation. It was running down the walls, windows and even the kitchen floor was wet when the heating is on or you used the oven. There was a smell of damp the whole time we were there and some of the internal walls are crumbling due to this problem. We had a lovely stay and enjoyed our holiday and would stay again but only in the warmer months.

I felt the cottage was not dog friendly because the neighbours started complaining within an hour of us being there because the dogs where playing after a long 5hr car journey with breaks.
I feel that they would have been the same if I had small children with me. I then felt on egg shells the whole time and wouldn't use the garden, was worried the while time that my autistic child would have a meltdown and wanted to keep the dogs separated in case they wanted to play. He continued to complain the whole time. I also wanted to wash the towels and the washing machine was so dirty that I had to clean it 1st but even after that the towels smelled so bad that they couldn't be used again. On the night we arrived we put the kitchen tap on and the pressure forced the tap off and we had to quickly turn off the water and we repaired this ourself, luckily that was just an easy repair of screwing it back on. The one plus was the beds, they were so comfortable and the best that I have ever had in holiday accommodation before.

The cottage itself was lovely in a fabulous location.
The beds were lovely and comfortable. The neighbours were absolutely fantastic. Cottage was extremely toastie, definitely not a cold house. The heating is idiot proof, the control was simple to use. However, the cottage is being let down by the cleaning company. It was not the best. There was food left in the oven which had not been cleaned. Same as the fridge. The biggest issue with us taking our family dogs on holiday with us was the slugs, which every night were all over the living room. We removed 8, but every morning when we got up there were slug trails all over the rug. This is a concern as slugs can carry Lungworm in their 'slime', which can be fatal to dogs. They appear to be coming out from under the skirting boards. By all means you can contact us about it.
