What our customers say about their holidays
Alan - Verified booking
When we booked way back during 2017, we booked both the East and the West Barns at the same time!
One was for the EAST Barn which we took at Xmas Time when we had a very enjoyable experience - nothing to do with it being Xmas time, see our review which is currently posted on your website and couldn't really have been bettered. The second booked - WEST, is the one we used during the week just ended during June and although one might say that they are broadly similar, being adjoined, but nothing could have been further from the truth. I shall endeavour to explain the differences which was to cause us a fair few difficulties during the week and proved to be a serious disappointment. *That said - all things other than for what is contained in the following explanation - were on a par with our previous experience during our stay at Xmas in the EAST Barn, so would definitely give 10 out of 10 for the rest. Major differences:Bedroom - pretty much the same in layout (Minus the Bathroom) but the Bed was smaller and much less comfortable PLUS - there was an overlong "step down" from the bedroom to the corridor leading to the living room area. The Bathroom isn't En Suite and doesn't have any extractor Fan and one has to fiddle about in the dark looking for the lightswitch before entering - and this is emmediately after stepping down from the bedroom. *We preferred not to leave the light on all night - this shouldn't have been required anyway. Being rather long in the tooth, having dodgy knees and being a tad unsteady on my feet, plus Diabetic to boot, my numerous trips during every night resulted in numerous trips and falls during the course of the week. On return journey from the Bathroom, even though the "step up" is indeed rather high compared to the norm, I appreciate that much younger and fitter people might comment on this but manage it as fit people would - and get on with things. I only mention this as a precaution - would recommend that you could perhaps use this as a caution to aid the unwary when booking. We would definitely consider a return to this venue - but NEVER ever book the WEST again, it would always be the EAST should we ever return. The East living area is much more open and spacious and has a Larger Dining Table. To summarise - The Venue and the hosts were as excellant as on our previous visit, cannot be faulted. The WEST Barn leaves a little to be desired and proved a disappointment. The EAST Barn - see my previous posting after our stay at Xmas 2017 - Brilliant!!! Sorry this review couldn't have been positive for our stay this time around. Best wishes Alan & Sue K

The cottage is in a good location but in need of some TLC.
The furnishings are tired and the mattresses are very saggy The fire extinguisher in the kitchen is out of date and it looks as though the fire blanket has been removed and re stuffed into its container. The tabs are not in the right place for it to be used properly. No appliances have been PAT tested. The microwave is in a poor condition. It is rusty inside at the back and side. The interior paint is peeling off. The stair carpet from the back door up to the sitting room is dirty, worn and wrinkled on some steps. The carpet on the landing is very worn. The main bedroom has plastic tubs sticking out from underneath it which catch your feet as well as looking bad. The mattress is very sagging and lumpy The bed frame creaks and squeaks- the bolts need tightening. I stayed in this bed by myself. I would not liked to have shared it with anyone. The duvet was very heavy and dense. There was a stain on it when I took the cover off at the end of the stay as requested. The mattresses on the single beds are also due for replacement. We came to Whitby to attend a funeral. We needed to hang up our clothes. The only wardrobe was full of bedding and other stuff. - this and all the stuff under the bed could have be stored in the downstairs cupboard and locked away. The chairs in the sitting room are also past their used by date. The seat cushion foam is very thin and you can feel the hard frame when sitting. The pleather is wrinkled because the cushions are worn out. Outside the small yard at the back was dirty with some rubbish and an old cloth on the floor. Long Steps to the cottage were very dirty with litter, dog poo and water leaking from a pipe. I realise these donât belong to you but you should contact the council/ neighbours about their condition. Over the years we have rented various properties around Whitby and sadly this one was a disappointment.

This cottage was very disappointing.
It had absolutely no atmosphere and was not at all homely. A rug in each room would make a good addition to make the place look less like a box. It certainly wasnât furnished to the high standard as described by Sykes, but was furnished with very basic items from IKEA. The sofa and chair in the living area were extremely hard and uncomfortable as was the mattress which was so soft you could both feel and hear the springs when you moved. The pillows had some kind of inner protector which made it sound like you were sleeping on a packet of crisps. The 2 pull down blinds in the bedroom do not stop the light coming in and as there are lights outside each door it is difficult to get off to sleep. Black out blinds would improve matters. We only had contact with the owner when we arrived and she had to go into the next cottage to borrow their pint of milk. On entering the cottage, we found a packet of Blue Riband biscuits which we thought was a bit mean after reading some previous reviews and compared with other greeting gifts we have received. We also found she had provided just 1 toilet roll. There was no toilet brush which one would have expected, the cold-water tap dripped constantly and the toilet seat moved when sat on. In addition, the grassed area at the rear needed cutting so as to make it usable. The owners mowed the grass on their own private pitch and put course to the front of their house so it would have been nice to have had the small area of grass behind the cottage mowed. In conclusion, this is the first time in 50 years of holidaying that we have been asked to strip the bed before we left!! What on earth do they do between the departing guests leaving at 10am and the arriving guests turning up at 3pm. Judging by the number of cobwebs everywhere, not that much. We will not be returning.

The location was great and the cottage very quirky but not suitable for dogs at all.
There is no garden and no grassed area so wherever the dog needs to relieve its self outside the cottage can only be next to someone else's property or down the steps to the cobbled shopping areas. The lounge is on the second floor and the steps are too steep and difficult for dogs. Most owners have the dogs with them in the lounge, they dont leave them on their own on another floor. The furnishings were very old, tired and uncomfortable. The easily accessible drawers to put clothes in the bedroom were full of towels and bedding for the cottage and the other small drawers difficult to get to.The shower was pretty much useless, over the bath with no shower rail. The parking permit is pretty useless as its for a parking area much further away from the central car park in town, which in itself is quite some distance across town to carry luggage, with a dog and our grandchild. No complementary condiments to give the lovely welcome most cottage do. No black bag for the bin, no spare toilet roll. The cottage feels like the owners cant be bothered putting in that special effort to make a nice welcome for guests but still are charging a high price. We will never stay there again and wont recommend to our friends.

Fantastic to be finally out of lockdown & allowed to go to the seaside!
!! However parking was a nightmare - unloading the car on a tiny street with loads of pedestrians & other vehicles trying to get past. Having to park miles away, so on a trip out to the beach having to carry all our stuff miles. It made it stressful & exhausting. I think it needs to be really clearly spelt out that parking in Whitby is difficult to find & the house location means I youâll have to park a long way away, if your v lucky you might get a spot in the limited pay & display £9 a day. Remember everything you bring has to be carried ... we brought way too much stuff! The house was quirky & v characterful which was lovely, but top stair landing was precarious & also The banister rail was loose, so had to be really on the ball! Itâs not really a family holiday house, but the location is fantastic and the house a real experience, loved the old bath! Youâll need healthy knees as there are a LOT of very steep uneven steps,! Iâd say itâs great for a short break just to explore Whitby as youâre right in the old town. But come on the train & with a small overnight bag!
