Holiday Cottages In Sandsend

This small fishing village is a charming place for a relaxing break. With its proximity to a large sandy beach and the beautiful town of Whitby, we can see why it is so well loved. All in all, this is an idyllic location for a cottage holiday.

Whether you're after bracing winter walks, lounging in the sun or splashing about in the waves, the beach at Sandsend is an enjoyable place at any time of year. Nestled on the edge of the North York Moors visitors will have the whole of this wonderful National Park on their doorsteps. It would be easy to spend your whole break in the peace and tranquillity of this village but if you want to venture further afield the cultural delights of Whitby are just around the corner.

Where coastline meets countryside, Sandsend enjoys a world-class position on Yorkshire's heritage coast. Gorgeous terracotta rooftops against lush green trees, our Sandsend holiday cottages are right in the thick of this coastal quaintness, lapping up their prime time views of the North York Moors. And if you're not there for the beach, you'll definitely want to go for the Sandside Cafe, a place to enjoy scones by the seaside and have some much needed R&R.

When the sun is out, Sandsend turns into an English seaside resort to rival even the best of the south west. We have a cosy cluster of Sansend holiday cottages right on the coast, some with unspoilt views of the water beyond. In wistful Whitby, this is one of Yorkshire's best loved staycation destinations, meaning you'll have your pick of the very best holiday cottages. Enjoy award winning restaurants, the Mulgrave Woods and remains of the old Mulgrave Castle, the lovely St Mary's Church, plus many more great Whitby attractions whilst you're there!

What our customers say about their holidays

We stayed at Rigg Cottage over the Easter weekend 2022.

A family of 4 with 2 dogs we needed somewhere dog friendly. The cottage was clean and tidy on arrival, with everything we needed for the weekend. The living room was cosy and well laid out, and the dining room / kitchen had everything you needed to be home from home. There was sufficient space also for our 2 dog crates after turning the dining table 90°. Outside space was fine for an enclosed garden, with a clothes horse under the stairs for outside drying and out house where we found the outside freezer (not used) and a couple of body boards the kids had a session on at the beach. The front bedroom was quite spacious even with a double and a single in there, the back room with the double I’d say was a little cosy but not an issue. The bathroom was well presented and the bath / shower were fine. The shower you had to gently adjust to get a fine line between too hot and cold, but once mastered no issue. Nothing I haven’t experienced before in hotels. Great to have the off-road parking too, that really helps. Location was perfect, literally 100 yards from the beach and very close to the pub and seafood restaurant which were both spot on. There’s a small shop around the bay, just check opening times. All in all we loved it and would have no hesitations in staying again. If I had to highlight and feedback for improvements I’d say I was a little nervous of the back fence and the potential for this to be jumped - not that my dogs did. Other than that I’ve really nothing negative to add. Thanks for a great stay!

The cottage was smaller and more worn than we expected.

It was quite hard work with a golden retriever as we were constantly stepping over her. it would be very hard work with 5 people in the house. The kitchen is not really big enough to cater for 5. The fridge is small. The photos suggest it is quiet smart when in fact it is tired and in need of a coat of paint. We also saw the building to the rear on google sat view and called to query what it was before booking. We were told it was nothing to worry about and not used. It is a house effectively in the back garden and lived in full time. We would not have booked had we know. We also called to find out if there was a hair dryer in the premises and were told not. There was, suggesting a lack of knowledge of the property. The sea view from the lounge is totally blocked when you park the car on the small parking area at the front. The best thing about this cottage was the location. Sandsend is a lovely village with good cafe and pubs. having the beach at the bottom of the road was great. We would say the cottage was slightly below average and not worth the cost.

The Cottage is a welcoming well presented, well equipped property, lovingly maintained to a very high standard.

A real home from home. The kitchen and dining area is light and spacious, the lounge is a peaceful place to chill after a days exploring, listen to music (there are ALEXA speakers dotted around), reading a book or simply snoozing on the comfortable sofa. The master bedroom is small as you'd expect in a period cottage, but had everything you could possiby need including plenty of storage, a large comfortable bed and dressing table. There are two modern bathrooms, one up, one down. Welcome touches such a fresh flowers, dressing gowns and peronal welcome message on the chalk board made the visit even more special. For us the location was perfect, set in a quiet valley of similarly beautiful houses, just a couple of minutes walk up from the sea front. Sandsend never felt busy and was the ideal base to explore the North Yorkshire coast. Whitby was a 5 minute drive away, but we prefered the walk, we recommend turning left after the glof clubhouse for some stunning views. A beautiful cottage, (one of the best we habe stayed in), in a stunning part of the world. We loved it.

Pro’s - location, garden to sit out, parking.

Con’s - house generally not clean, garden / driveway unkempt, house shabby in general and not well looked after; eg previous reviews April 23 and May 24 note issues still not rectified (bath panel / plaster above radiator in bedroom). Property really needs total refurbishment to bring up to a level where it can justify the current rental price: indeed, we have now booked a property nearby for the same week next year, better location and recently renovated, for a lesser amount. Unless the owners are willing to invest in improving the property, I think Rigg Cottage will struggle to compete with others on the market. Also during our stay, there were two properties next door but one either side undergoing building / extension work, so the street was busy and noisy with workmen from around 7.30/8.00 in the morning, and overlooking the garden in the afternoon, so not ideal. Will not be returning, sorry.

Property was dirty on arrival all cups glasses and bowls had to be washed before use as were covered in hair and dirt.

Bedroom two had a leak from the ceiling when the toilet was flushed. There was a lot of hair all around the property. The sofas were covered in dark throws which were also covered in hair and didn’t look like the photos at all. It looked generally tired and a bit neglected with weeds in the front and rear garden and the bathroom tap leaked if it wasn’t turned really tight. Radiators were really dirty and there was no wardrobe to hang clothes - the chest of drawers for your clothes was in the kitchen rather than the bedroom and you had to inch your way around the bed as the bed was too big for the room which made getting ready a bit tricky. We didn’t report issues as just wanted to get on and enjoy our stay as best we could without people having to come in and fix things. Sandsend was really beautiful, great beach, places to eat and friendly people but I wouldn’t stay in this property again.
