What our customers say about their holidays

    Expensive & Disappointing.

Having viewed the property on the Sykes website, what sold it to us, was the chance to sit outside in the sunshine, next to the beautiful surroundings , with family searing and the use of the hot tub(despite the additional fee charged for this). So having booked the property for a week for potentially five of us, we were so disappointed upon our arrival. The house looked lovely from the exterior. Parking was however limited. The house is ideally located for Whitby and all the local beaches and that was a great plus. The house was generally clean and tidy. However it wasn’t long before we started to find little things that let it down. The toilet seat was loose which required tightening, the small towel holder was hanging on by a thread; the vacuum cleaner holder in the kitchen wasn’t fixed to the wall properly. The beds I found uncomfortable, however my wife found them the opposite . The double beds are two singles pushed together which caused an uncomfortable ridge in the middle. The quilts were extremely thick and heavy, ideal for winter but not for summer. Bed linen was lovely and clean and there were sufficient towels provided. The showers worked well. The shower seal needs a good bleaching as there was green mould evident. The Wi-Fi was pretty awful . It worked okay downstairs but upstairs it was non existent, This was evident of the tvs in each bedroom. You could not get any programs, either ones that are streamed such as Netflix, Amazon or any terrestrial tv. So it was effectively a waste of time having tvs in rooms that you couldn’t use. The main tv in the lounge only has streaming and catch up tv . No terrestrial tv. So unless you subscribe to streaming services you will be even more disappointed. Now we doing go there to watch tv, we wanted to sit outside. Well where do I start with the rear garden area. There was some that rattan furniture but no seat covers. I believed they had been ruined in a previous review and not replaced. So no comfortable seating to use. So the first thing we had to do, was spend time and money visiting local supermarkets etc looking for a couple of sunloungers to use during the week. The table outside is tired, needs sanding down and re varnishing. The rear, area was over grown with weeds, hanging baskets with dead plants or weeds in. There were dead leaves and a dirty floor in and around the hot tub. The hot tub stunk so much of chlorine that it made your eyes water and brought me up in a rash. Nobody attended to the hot tub during the week, unless they came during the day whilst we were out. The chlorine gradually died off to a bearable level mid week. Half the jets didn’t work in the hot tub, which was annoying when you are paying extra for the facility. There wasn’t a lot of privacy when using the hot tub and could easily remedied with a little bamboo screening. So overall the holiday home failed to live up to our expectations. We have used Sykes on numerous occasions and this has been by far the worst we have stayed in. We would love to return to the area but would not return here. So despite a few faults within we thought we could live with

Cliff House was very nice & welcoming.

The kitchen was very well equipped, however rather than a Dishwasher we felt a Washing Machine & washing line in the garden are a must & this addition should maybe looked into as this would make it perfect. Generally the house was very clean, however more attention to detail needs to be made to bedding as in bunk beds there were small black hairs on the inside sheets, and the person staying in that room actually refused to sleep inside the bed, we tried calling the point of contact number during our stay several times to report this but each time no answer. Hot Tub was very nice & relaxing. The only thing that spoilt our holiday is a couple of days before leaving we noticed the back garden was soaking wet & there was raw sewerage coming up from the manhole cover, this was obv a big health & safety concern and especially worrying as our young dog had been out there when we discovered the problem & we then worried we might have a poorly dog who needed Veterinary attention. Again we tried several times to contact the phone no. on point of contact & also the owners mobile no. to report this ASAP. All to no avail so had to contact Sykes Holiday Cottages who I have to say did get hold of the owner who then gave permission for them to contact Drain company who came out to attend later that day, obv this interfered with our days plans as although we left back gate unlocked for access the Drain company called me direct for some reason as seemed to be under the impression I was the owner of the property. He did tell us that he had attended the property a couple of times before for the same problem & that the owner had previously tried to unblock the Drain himself as they found pieces of rope in the Drain system, so obv there is a problem which needs sorting properly ASAP. The same Drain company woke me up early with a phone call to my mobile 4 days after our return home ( today ) telling me they had found a big blockage at MY property, once again I relayed that it is a Holiday Let House & I am not the owner!! Whilst we appreciate that problems can occur it was clearly evident by what the Drain guy told us that this is an ongoing problem and the House should not be let out to ppl until this is fully resolved.

A really enjoyable 4 night stay.

.. The owner couldn't have been more helpful, both in the run up to our arrival and while we were there (we couldn't figure the heating out!). All very easily resolved - fast and smooth. Cliff House is extremely well-equipped, and very comfortable. It was spotlessly clean and the welcome hamper was a really lovely touch. The beds are comfortable - not too soft, not too hard - and the bed linen soft and fluffy. The central heating is great and gets the house really warm - always a worry in a holiday cottage at this time of year - and we lit the stove every evening. The teens loved the hot tub. The cottage is about 4 houses away from a local shop that sells everything you'd need in a pinch - though at a price premium - while there's a massive Asda, Aldi (and McDonalds!) a 5 minute drive away in Skelton. Loftus itself is... pretty, but not touristy. Which was fine with us. We visited Whitby, Staithes, Saltburn and Skinningrove Beach - which is a must, you can walk from the cottage (15 minutes) but we drove on our way back from Staithes. It's a truly lovely beach. I would highly recommend this cottage and would love to return to visit all of the above places again, on a warm dry day. The weather wasn't kind to us but we had a great break anyway. Tiny improvements - a second bin in the kitchen for recycling, and hooks in the bedrooms for dressing gowns, which we wouldn't usually take on a short break, but hot tub! But honestly, the place has everything you need.

Lovely property that was very clean and had great facilities.

Even more spacious than it looks in pictures. The welcome hamper was also a lovely touch that was appreciated. Parking is on street so could be a bit tricky if more than one car and with a lot of luggage to carry if you can’t get a space directly outside. The only real negative we had was that you have to pay an additional supplement to use the hot tub (this is made clear upon booking) however, upon arrival the hot tub was only 28 degrees and as per the house rules, you can’t use the tub after 9pm. Unfortunately, the temp wasn’t warm enough for use until after 9pm which meant we could only use it for one out of the two days of the stay. Not a huge problem but worth mentioning for others who may be booking for that purpose. It also isn’t well lit around the hot tub which in the winter, when it’s dark by 4pm, isn’t ideal. Overall though, we enjoyed our stay and it’s a great base for exploring places nearby such as Saltburn.
