What our customers say about their holidays
David - Verified booking
The cottage is in a good location just a short walk from Sedbergh.
There are lots of places to visit nearby all within reasonable driving distance. The property description is slightly misleading as it also includes the property next door in the initial photo so overall it was smaller than we anticipated. The lack of outdoor space was not an issue for us and we knew this before booking. We had read on some reviews that people were given a welcome pack but we did not receive one on our recent visit. There were 3 packs of rather sad looking hotel biscuits in the kitchen hamper but nothing else. We presumed there would be a freezer of some sort in the kitchen but thatâs not the case. Thatâs a basic for any kitchen but there wasnât even a freezer box in the fridge. The kitchen itself is OK for 4 people but it would be very tight for 6 eating in there. The top floor bedrooms had no heating during our stay and despite us reporting this and being assured somebody would call to look into it, nobody turned up. We left the key in the key-safe every day as requested. Whilst the weather was OK it needed some heating on, so this was not pleasant as the radiators were literally stone cold. Itâs like they werenât even connected to the boiler. It was very disappointing to be told it was going to be attended to and for that not to happen without even a call back. The bathroom configuration did not work for us as both bathrooms are on the 1st floor meaning those staying on the 2nd floor had to come down a floor to use the facilities. That may not sound like too much of an issue but the stairs are really steep and narrow. They need more grab rails or ropes on the stairs to make them more secure as losing your footing is not difficult.

This is a new letting in an old cottage which the owners have refurbished to a beautiful standard.
We were honoured to be their first guests! The living room has THE most comfy sofas, plus a spare chair and big footstool, so plenty of room for us all to be cosy despite the weather (we had storms Dudley and Eunice while we were there), and the gas/log burner effect fire made it all the cosier. And it's a good size too. The bedrooms have super comfy beds and there's plenty of cupboard storage for your things. The bathrooms (one is ensuite) are modern and at the same time in keeping with the old cottage. The kitchen is well equipped - as we as a group are still wary of Covid we didn't want to eat out, and it had everything we needed to prepare all our meals. (there isn't a freezer compartment if you want to have ice cream, but there's 2 places to buy icecream in town) The owners welcomed us by text, and were very approachable. - I feel like we have new friends. They also emailed us a PDF with lots of info about the cottage and the area. Parking was no problem - room for at least one car outside and the others very nearby. It's a short walk (5 mins) into the Main Street of Sedbergh, which has independent shops, cafes and pubs/ eateries (next time!), and books for sale everywhere. The surrounding area with the Howgill Fells, access to the Yorkshire Dales or the Lake District, has everything for the outdoor enthusiast (one of our family did get out high each day despite the weather). There's also lovely riverside walks for the less fell-fit. 3 Settlebeck Cottages was exactly what we needed for our first full family stay together under one roof in 2 years, and hopefully we'll come back again.

Howgill cottage is located in an excellent position for visiting the Western Dales and the Lake District.
The area around Sedbergh is beautiful and fantastic walking and cycling country. Sedbergh itself is also an attractive non-touristy town. The cottage itself was compact, well presented and homely. The washing machine was a real bonus. We found the electric Aga a bit of a faff for cooking (especially for making toast) and would have preferred a conventional cooker and toaster. Crockery and cutlery could have been more abundant as there were only 4 of each item and only 2 glasses & 2 wine glasses for example. There is no dishwasher. We managed to chip a mug and the owner was kind enough to replace it on our behalf. Thank you. We did feel that the steep stairs and cobbled path (and steps to the cottage) should have been better highlighted in the listing as this would make it unsuitable for young children or the elderly. The cobbles were covered in moss and were quite slippery when wet. Also the hedge along the side of the path could have done with some cutting back. When leaving the path to cross the road, you had to be especially cautious as it was tricky to see oncoming cars and we had a couple of near misses. There is little outside space at the cottage, just a small table and 2 chairs immediately in front of the house. The TV could do with being updated and it would be nice to add a radio/bluetooth speaker. Wifi was very good. All in all, we had a good stay at Howgill Cottage. This holiday home could be made excellent with a few of the above modifications.

The details of the property are erroneous.
Internally we have only comments that the bedroom is not king sizeânot enough floor space for 2 holdalls. More advice on the Smart TV would have been helpful. We failed to get BBC 1 !! A separate radio would have been appreciated. Externally we list the facts which ruined our stay There is no lawn as advertised : the main photograph has been taken from the neighbours garden and the low wire boundary fence is no more than 5 feet from front of cottage. Hence the description of patio is in our view not correct .. Additionally on this good weather period the neighbours garden was used continually. A tent was 7 feet from the lounge window and a semi permanent swing covered lounger was 2 feet from the small patio? table. Lively teenagers played swing ball up to the boundary of their lawn and the view from the window was directly onto both the tent and the rotary clothes dryer There was no view as advertised. We have a number of photographs to endorse the above and would be pleased to forward.

We absolutely loved our holiday at Bramble Cottage in Sedbergh.
The cottage had everything we needed, it felt like home from home, comfortable and the views of the Hills from our bedroom window was just amazing. This is the first time we came to Sedbergh and it definitely wont be the last, the area was beautiful, there is so many walks with, each unique, and the scenery was amazing which ever walk you decide to do. The one we liked best was the Pepperpot and the Akay Estate were you walk through the school grounds and you can still find the beautiful floor tiles from the Akay Estate in the ground, we did this walk three times, just to feel the history of the place. Sedbergh, although a very quaint town, it is beautiful with so much to it and the fish and chip shop "The Haddock Paddock" was one of the best. Highly Recommended and we will definitely be back, not just to the place itself but also Bramble Cottage. Thank you again. The Stones Family (Chesterfield)
