What our customers say about their holidays
Fiona - Verified booking
Anyone booking the cottage needs to know is that it fronts the busy A591 that runs from Windemere to Keswick and which carries heavy lorries.
It is on a mini roundabout as well. All the windows over look the main road and it would be very noisy if you wanted the windows open in the summer. You also need the blinds half closed in order to ensure privacy downstairs during the day as the public can see straight in. The first step down to the front door is extremely steep ( about a 12" drop ) and the car park space is very small. I was told my Skoda Octavia would fit but in reality only a Fiat 500 or a Smart car would fit comfortably. Our main problem was securing the property. The first day we went out we locked up and put the key in the key safe. On our return I just pushed the door open as the lock had failed. I rang Sykes straight away, and although someone came out on the Saturday night, it took until Wednesday for the lock to be replaced resulting in us having to hide valuables such as laptops before we went out as we couldn't be sure the lock was secure. A couple of times the lock failed the other way and we were locked in and it took a lot of jiggling to get the door open. The underfloor heating in the sitting room wasn't working as the controller needed a new battery but both the out of hours maintenance men said they don't carry spares and we were given a portable electric heater. When we left at the end of the week the underfloor heating issue still had not been resolved. Inside the cottage is tastefully decorated, clean and cosy, the wood burner very efficient, the kitchen well equipped and the bed very comfortable. We did enjoy our week but it wasn't as relaxing as it could have been because of the worry of securing the cottage and its contents.

We have just spent a lovely long weekend at High Dow Crag in Coniston.
The property was absolutely spotless, extremely comfortable and literally everything had been thought about & catered for. A lovely touch was the welcome bottle of Prosecco on arrival, a Lavazza coffee machine complete with podsâ¦and my wifeâs favouriteâ¦the Denby crockery! The kitchen had everything you would expect to have at home including a slow-cooker which is a nice touch. A very comfy bed and plenty of wardrobe / drawer space in the bedroom. There was a fabulous large screen tv with sound-bar which gave us the option to watch our Apple TV faves (yesâ¦we did log out afterwards!). The bathroom consisted of a proper bath with a shower over and was also spotless. We couldnât rate the property highly enough! As for those who complained that it was a first floor apartmentâ¦we knew this beforehand as it was made clear enough, and it is about a mile out of Coniston with âpermissiveâ paths available to allow a walk into town away from the main road. Perhaps one suggestion is that the welcome pack is left on top of the work-top so that visitors can immediately see it as we eventually came across it within the book-case. Anyway, we absolutely loved it and hope to be back next year, preferably for the whole week!

High Dow Crag is a cosy, well equipped apartment with lovely views.
The entrance is on a bend in the road, so getting out, either on foot or in the car, was a bit treacherous. For walking, though, once we got to the footpath just down the road, it was great for getting into Coniston along the old railway bed and then back along the lake. It's a good location for lots of walks from the door and the owners provided plenty of maps and information which we appreciated. Our only other slight issue was that the noise insulation wasn't brilliant - we could hear talking, snoring and the bathroom fan from the apartment below which did disturb our sleep a couple of nights (presumably our walking around, talking etc could also have disturbed the people downstairs), so earplugs are advised if you're noise sensitive. Otherwise, we had a lovely stay doing lots of walking, visiting Brantwood on a boat trip round the lake, and enjoying the views, interspersed with coffee and cakes in the Bluebird Cafe. On our one rainy day we enjoyed doing the jigsaw puzzle and playing Scrabble, which were also provided in the apartment. Overall a lovely week.

The property's location was perfect for me and also dog friendly too.
So peaceful (silence and no light poution), beautiful views, and not too far from a couple of pubs and the village of Hawkshead. The field adjoining the property was perfect to let my dog Minnie, have a safe run around. I stopped in the Coniston accommodation which was perfect for me, very clean and very comfortable. I had previously read reviews that highlighted that you could hear some noise from the flat above but i accepted that risk when I booked. My lived experience was that during the first 4 days (of my 6 day stay) I heard very little. My last 2 nights was slightly more challenging though. Dont get me wrong, I didn't feel like I had part of the Riverdance dance troop staying above me but the level of noise did increase. Im not sure what the owners can do, other than let the flat above be very aware that not wearing clogs would be more than appreciated by those downstairs. I would advise that if you are easily irritated by any noise from above, then the Coniston isnt for you. I will be going back for sure.

Stunning location.
The accommodation is not luxurious but it is comfortable and spotlessly clean. The garden is great for dogs and children but although there have obviously been tubs for bedding plants in the past these were no longer in use. It did look a little lacking in TLC as a result. My husband has limited mobility and although Coniston is not specifically adapted for disabled people he was able to manoeuvre his walker around inside with no problem and use the shower with the suction grab handles that we brought with us. The only issues that we had were a) not enough toilet paper - there is an "allowance" of 2 rolls so if you think that you are going to use more then bring some with you! b) We had very heavy winter weight duvets, we asked if they had any summer ones but they did not but we were supplied with an extra sheet to use with the bedspread. If we continue to get such hot summers then this is maybe something the managers of the accommodation would like to consider. We will certainly return
